Rs. 48,000 Crores Business Opportunity in Mobile Value Added Services - Sify

New Delhi, Delhi, India:Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be launching video on demand for its mobile phone subscribers in a month’s time. The announcement was made by Chairman & Managing Director Shri Rakesh K Upadhyay, BSNL while inaugurating VAS ASIA 2012, 12th International Conference & Exhibition at New Delhi, organized by Bharat Exhibitions.

“The MVAS industry is expected to create a business opportunity worth around INR 48,000 crore by the year 2015. This in itself is a clear indication of the future of VAS services in India. No doubt this has created a new excitement for all those who are in this space and for those who are entering,” said Shashi Dharan, Managing Director, Bharat Exhibitions.

During his address, Shri A. K. Bhargava, Executive Director (Wireless Service) Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) said that the story of the value added service on the mobile phone is just the beginning. “All products on the mobile phone are for the masses, there is a requirement of creative innovation, which should be cost effective and for masses Shri Bhargava added.

The emergence of the mobile phone as the single device for a host of services has changed the paradigm in the communication and entertainment industries with several discreet devices being displaced in favour of a single device, said Mr. Rajan S. Mathews, Director-General of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). He drew attention to some emerging problems in the telecommunication area where customer charges needed to be as low as possible for the mass communication device to be affordable to the last man. “The “exploding cost of regulation” is a critical issue. The increasing introduction of regulatory issues into what is actually market driven service is affecting the growth of this sector, “said Mr. Mathews.

“Mobile internet users are expected to surpass the desktop Internet users 2014. The disparity in the time spent on mobile (10 per cent) and the advertisement spend (1per cent) would also rebalance soon, thereby boosting revenue from the mobile VAS for the operators. With advertising revenue rising by at least three times in two years from now this sector will also bridge the social media and location based marketing with personalization that was not possible till now, “ said Mr. Alex Moukas, CEO Velti, while delivering the keynote address at the VAS Asia 2012. He further added that explosive mobile Internet adoption will surpass the desk top users.

“India’s Internet users penetration will rise to 35 per cent by 2015 and more than three quarters will choose mobile phone access,” said Mr. Sukesh Jain, head VAS & Content, Bharti Airtel. The total Internet access capability by 2015 is expected to rise from 100 million to 450 million, of which 41 percent will be using mobile only and another 38 per cent both cell phone and PC. Data service on the mobile is expected to broaden and deepen customer experience with the cell phone with the consequent improvement in the operator revenues. Revenue contribution from current VAS services is expected to come down as revenues from data increase as a percentage of total revenue.

What was holding back the prospect of huge revenues from mobile VAS was the fact that smart phone base was growing slowly till recently. In the first quarter of this year out of 50 million new devices sold, smart phones constituted only 2.7 million and the total smart phone base in the country is around 27 million, while the total subscribers base have crossed 950 million. The population that needs to be addressed is the regional language speakers who are the large majority compared to only 7 per cent knowing English speaking population.

“Mobile VAS has huge revenue potentials, the global average share of MVAS revenue is leading user countries is pegged at approximately 23 per cent ,” said Mr. Chandan Ghosh, Head -Global Wholesale & Carrier Business , Aircel Limited. The drive to increase average revenue per user and gain customer loyalty in a highly competitive market has led operators to liven up their mobile portfolios. Operators are looking at various means to use MVAS as a growth driver and key differentiator. According to him the industry falling prices of handsets and increasing competition was forcing manufacturers to shift focus to services. For operators falling voice revenues, increasing competition and heavy investments in 3G have made them to turn to VAS to secure their business.

New opportunities were emerging for banks, educational institutions and health care providers to use value added services over their mobile. This could be the game that operators would have to address to improve their revenues. The broad categories for successful monetization of MVAS were in M-education, M-commerce, M-Health and M-Infotainment. “The end game is not about generating new revenues. It’s about delivering compelling customer experience in order to extract new value from existing customers”, said Mr. Ghosh.

“The opportunity for the technology players to play a critical role in the further expansion of the Indian VAS Market has become more crucial now”, said Mr. John He, CEO, DONJIN Communication Technology Co. Ltd.

Non-voice business services cited as growth opportunity - BusinessWorld Online

“The Philippines is certainly ready for non-voice services,” David Rizzo, the president for the Asia-Pacific arm of business process outsourcing (BPO) firm Teleperformance said in a forum.

“It is already demonstrating its capability for non-voice activities, be it information technology engineering service offering support, animation, human resources and knowledge process outsourcing,” he added.

He noted that the increase in non-voice activity would allow the country to capture a bigger share of the global outsourcing industry.

“A growth in non-voice activity would help the Philippines grab a bigger share of the global outsourcing and offshoring industry that research company Everest Group estimates to expand up to $280 billion this year,” he added.

According to Mr. Rizzo, the Philippines last year overtook India as leader in call-center services in revenue and employment.

Everest Group estimated the Philippines’ contact services to have earned $7.38 billion in exports last year, surpassing India’s $7 billion. The Philippines’ call centers employ about half a million, compared to India’s 350,000, he said.

However, India’s BPO industry still led the market with nearly $15 billion in income, versus the Philippines’ $9 billion.

The Business Process Association of the Philippines, a local industry group, aims to double the country’s revenue and number of seats by 2016.

Mr. Rizzo noted however that recruitment and retention of qualified contact agents remained to be the toughest hurdles for BPO companies.

“There are many challenges in our business, but there is certainly none that rivals the challenge of the available labor supply,” he said.

“It is becoming more and more critical to focus on retention initiative to ensure that you are not having to replace your own employment pool while growing at the same time,” he added.

Mr. Rizzo said there are various reasons behind the high employee turnover in the BPO industry.

“The popular ones are lack of appetite for overnight work. People exit the industry because they can’t work at night,” he said.

“Also, people exit the industry because the job does not meet their expectation. That might be because it is either too technical or it is too challenging,” he said, adding that agents are sometimes forced to quit their jobs due to customers that are hard to deal with.

To cope, companies are advised to invest in the employees further. “That is the challenge. [We must] create the best possible experience for our people, [through] the amenities and employee engagement activities...” he said. -- Cliff Harvey C. Venzon

HP Boosts Partner Revenue Opportunities in Cloud and Services - msnbc.com

LAS VEGAS, NV — HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced programs and solutions that enable channel partners to grow cloud and services revenue while helping customers ease their transition to the cloud.

Unveiled at HP's 2012 Global Partner Conference, the new HP PartnerONE cloud specialization and collaboration programs and expanded HP ServiceONE offerings can extend channel partners' sales reach and speed customers' time to market.

The cloud computing market is projected to reach $143 billion by 2013,(1) which offers channel partners new business opportunities. According to an independent survey commissioned by HP, partners want broad cloud solutions that incorporate software and services, offer more collaboration with each other to share cloud expertise, and are flexible enough to support a range of business models.(2)

"To capitalize on cloud and services opportunities, channel partners need programs that align with their business strategies," said Kirsten McCrabb, vice president, Worldwide Channels Marketing, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking, HP. "Last year, HP invested more than $1 billion in programs across its portfolio to help partners pursue growth markets and win more business."

Expanded HP cloud programs
The new framework of programs creates opportunities for channel partners to deliver superior cloud solutions for customers by aligning with HP's hybrid delivery approach to cloud. The programs support a range of cloud business models, offering benefits based on partners' expertise and investments.

"Customers want to move quickly to integrate cloud into their IT strategies, and they want partners with the expertise to align cloud solutions with business objectives," said Henry Fastert, chief technologist at SHI, an HP partner based in Somerset, N.J. "HP's partner programs and portfolio have enabled us to build our business, letting us become an early leader in providing cloud services and solutions to our clients."

The new HP cloud programs for channel partners include:

HP Cloud Builder Specialist, a new HP PartnerONE specialization for partners with cloud expertise based on HP solutions such as HP CloudSystem. This specialization includes existing partner enablement and training programs for cloud infrastructure, software and services, including the HP Cloud Centers of Excellence demonstration program, which has sites at more than 100 partner facilities worldwide. HP Interchange, a social media network that enables partner collaboration in designing and deploying cloud offerings to offer complete solutions to customers. For example, a channel partner looking for software to meet a specific customer requirement can search the HP Interchange to identify another partner with software expertise.

In addition, HP is offering new financial incentives for channel partners to secure successful sales opportunities for HP CloudAgile service providers. As a result, channel partners can expand their cloud portfolios as they seek out new business opportunities. Channel partners also can participate in the HP CloudAgile program as a service provider.

HP ServiceONE Partner Support
HP extended the HP ServiceONE program with a new storage services support model that enables qualified partners to expand into high-growth storage markets and boost profitability. HP ServiceONE Partner Support for HP Storage offers qualified partners the ability to sell their own services backed by HP support.

HP ServiceONE is the industry's only partner program to offer three engagement models, enabling partners to broaden their portfolios to capture more market opportunities. Partners may sell HP services to customers, with HP delivering support; sell and deliver HP services to customers; or sell partner-branded services while accessing HP's world-class support.

HP Packaged Consulting Services
New HP Packaged Consulting Services enable channel partners to increase services revenues by offering consulting expertise to customers without needing to invest in specialized staff resources. These popular cloud, storage and networking services feature standard pricing and discounts for easy quoting, creating new opportunities to expand services business.

Pricing and availability
Partners can now participate in training and enablement programs that will be part of the HP PartnerONE Cloud Builder Specialist program worldwide rollout beginning Nov. 1.

The HP Interchange will be demonstrated at the Global Partner Conference, with enhancements planned through 2012.

HP ServiceONE Partner Support will be available to select partners in March, with worldwide availability later this year.

HP Packaged Consulting Services are available worldwide, with prices beginning at $2,000.(3)

IBM Adds New Services, Programs to Social Business Offerings - CIO Insight

Ahead of its Lotusphere 2012 conference, IBM announced a series of new programs, services and partnerships to continue to push forward the company's social business strategy.

IBM launched its social business play in a big way at Lotusphere 2011, delivering new software and services to lay the foundation for its enterprise customers to take advantage of social networking and media to become truly social businesses. Now, with a Jan. 11 announcement, IBM has introduced a set of new efforts including consulting opportunities, educational programs and workshops to expand on its social business initiative.

"The opportunity to transform into a social business can be stunted without a focus on engagement, culture change and policy," said Alistair Rennie, general manager of Social Business at IBM, in a statement. "Social technologies, when combined with the right skills and culture, can truly unlock the potential of people within the organization to collaborate, innovate, make smarter business decisions and ultimately drive their bottom line."

With its Lotus software, IBM has a legacy of social software products and is poised to tap further into the lucrative market for social business software and services. According to Forrester Research, the market opportunity for social business software is expected to grow at a rate of 61 percent through 2016, reaching $6.4 billion, compared with $600 million last year.

Indeed, in June 2011, market research firm IDC ranked IBM No. 1 in worldwide market share for social platform software for 2009 and 2010. Also according to IDC, the worldwide revenue for the social platforms software market was more than $500 million in 2010, representing growth of 31.9 percent. The market opportunity for social platforms is expected to grow by a factor of nearly 2 billion worldwide by 2014, IDC said.

With this latest move, IBM is investing in its clients and business partners to develop the skills, technical support and industry resources that will allow them to effectively adopt social networking capabilities to transform their business operations, the company said. This includes introducing new technical workshops designed to improve skills and consulting offerings to help develop a business culture that fosters open collaboration and sharing among employees, clients and business partners.

The new IBM social business initiatives include:

Strategic consulting from IBM Global Business Services to help organizations better understand their current adoption of social business tools for both internal and external purposes and to help articulate how social business accelerates and alleviates business challenges. Global educational and mentorship programs for clients and business partners on how to become effective community managers, the fastest growing job in social, while increasing employee engagement over top, line-of-business communities on the social software platform. Technical certification programs that help customers and business partners validate and demonstrate their skills through assessment exams and training resources so they can plan for and perform the installation, configuration and day-to-day tasks associated with ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of social software solutions. Social Business Agenda workshops at IBM's Virtual Innovation Center providing immediate access to discussion forums focused on the benefits of becoming a social business, providing clients and business partners with case study examples of successful social businesses, and helping them to develop an agenda for driving social adoption.

IBM also announced a partnership with The Dachis Group, a large social business consultancy, to help organizations quickly drive adoption success through a social business adoption quick start workshop. The workshop combines IBM services for the implementation of social business solutions for enterprises with additional services from The Dachis Group and focuses on the use of social business technology while fostering cultural skills and engagement, IBM said.

"You can really see a growth of maturity in the marketplace that IBM helped create," said Sandy Carter, vice president of Social Business Evangelism and Sales at IBM, in an interview with eWEEK's sister publication ChannelInsider. Carter was referring to IBM's major push into the space at Lotusphere 2011.

Bullhorn Job Opportunity Report Shows Manufacturing, Educational Services and Health Care Sectors All Experienced Double Digit Growth in Job Openings - MSN Money

PR Newswire

BOSTON, Jan. 6, 2012

BOSTON, Jan. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Bullhorn today released its December Job Opportunity Report, benchmarking new job openings by sector and region to identify bright spots in employment. According to Bullhorn's sector data, adjusted for seasonality, the manufacturing, educational services and health care sectors all experienced month-over-month double-digit growth in job openings. The manufacturing industry led the pack, with a 43 percent increase.

Looking across its job openings data, Bullhorn can also project the upcoming data from the BLS Employment Opportunity Index that will be released on February 3, 2012. Bullhorn predicts that the U.S. economy will add 170,000 jobs in January 2012, continuing the positive trend.

"We are seeing a steady increase in job opportunity across regions and sectors, which is very welcome news," said Art Papas, CEO of Bullhorn. "We are predicting that, in general, 2012 will be a better year for job seekers."

Sector Data

The manufacturing sector showed the greatest opportunity with a 43 percent month-over-month gain in new job openings. The utilities industry showed the greatest losses, with a 30 percent contraction in new job openings. Similar to the regional data, a year-over-year view shows a more promising picture with gains in almost every sector. The arts, entertainment and recreation sector led the year-over-year growth coming in at 203 percent, while public administration came in last with a loss of -64 percent.

Regional Data

Month-over-month, the Southwest experienced the smallest drop with a -15 percent decrease in new job openings, while the Mid-Atlantic added the fewest new jobs (-23 percent). Year-over-year data shows a better outlook with gains in all six regions, with the Midwest at the top, gaining 53 percent in new job openings. This data is not seasonally adjusted, which is the primary reason for the month-over-month drop.

The Bullhorn Job Opportunity Report is calculated based on new job openings across more than 50,000 recruiters and five years of historical data, which includes 13 million analyzed records.
