Vail Daily column: Health and wellness as an economic development tool

Health and wellness and the associated business opportunities present an economic development tool for our community, as evidenced recently by the town of Vail's pursuit of a partnership with the Vail Valley Medical Center and the Steadman Clinic.

Regardless of politics or any specifics on that particular project, health and wellness are big business in the Vail Valley and they show no sign of going away.

The Vail Valley Partnership, at the direction of the Vail Local Marketing District Advisory Council, led the solicitation for a brand research study back in 2007. That process resulted in the selection of Reach Advisors and James Chung.

The research conducted by Reach Advisors helped focus Vail, and later other entities within the Vail Valley, to focus on health and wellness as a “pillar” of economic growth and a point of differentiation amongst our competitive set of mountain communities. This was further cemented as an important component of our economy in 2011 as part of the Eagle County Economic Development Plan.

Health and wellness have also been highlighted in the Colorado Blueprint as one of 15 business segments targeted for focus in our statewide economic development efforts. The Colorado Blueprint is the state of Colorado's economic development plan as developed by the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

Health and wellness, while a somewhat vague term, present an opportunity to our community due to our natural infrastructure and our already existing base of business entities. After all, Vail, and the entire Vail Valley, is home to a variety of successful organizations in the health and wellness field.

The good news for the Vail Valley is that health and wellness have a natural tie to our recreational benefits and our tourism industry. And we can work together to enhance our destination as a group and meeting location to target more continuing medical education programs and other medical meetings by promoting our health and wellness infrastructure and by working together.

The Vail Valley Partnership has long been involved in tourism promotion of the Vail Valley. Our group sales efforts in 2011 resulted in over 14,500-plus room nights generated, lodging revenue of over $2.6 million and a direct economic impact of more than $10 million. The Partnership attends 30-plus tradeshows and events promoting the destination on an annual basis. A handful of these events specifically target medical meetings, continuing education and the health and wellness community — making the health and wellness focus a natural extension of our already successful efforts.

Stay tuned as the Partnership will soon be launching the Vail Valley Health and Wellness Initiative, which will serve as an online clearinghouse for all Vail Valley health and wellness activities and will provide a collaborative structure to this growing business segment. The Health and Wellness Initiative will allow the Vail Valley to build on our recreational base to expand our health/medical education focus, driving higher lodging occupancies and increasing the local collaboration in this important industry.

Interested in learning more? If you benefit from the Partnership's efforts to develop collaboration with health & wellness stakeholders or to drive additional medical meetings to the valley, contact Jeremy Rietmann at 970-477-4012 or via email at jrietmann@visitvailvalley.com

Liberty Health Network Sees Increased Growth in First Time Business Opportunity Seekers as Americans Consider Options to Traditional Employment - PRWeb

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) February 05, 2012

For almost 13 years, Liberty Health Network, LLC (LHN) has offered individuals a simple straight-forward method for earning extra income from home. In years gone by, many inquiries were made to the company from individuals who had prior business experience, or who were looking earn some part-time income. LHN reports now that for the first time, people wanting to start a full time home-business without prior experience is on the rise.

“At one time, only 20% of our inquiries came from first-time entrepreneurs wanting to go full-time with a home business right out of the gate. Now, that number is approaching 80%,” says Chief Operating Officer Russell Bly. “Sooner or later, the reality sets in that finding careers with substantial upward mobility are increasingly harder to find. People are looking to self employment for a myriad of reasons. Unlimited income potential, Tax advantages, and personal freedom, and especially lack of viable options are just a few of the factors driving our ad respondents to call us,” said Bly.

“Our business model is the only option for many of today's aspiring entrepreneurs,” said Chief Financial Officer Tracy Grevert. “You can start a traditional franchise if you have thousands, to hundred's of thousands of dollars. You can set up a store on Amazon, Yahoo, or Google if you have $30 a month, plus a few thousand dollars in products to inventory to ship and provide customer service on. Or, for less than $15 a month, you can build a business where LHN handles websites, inventory, credit card processing, customer service, etc. LHN is really the only option for an increasing number of people in this economy,” reports Grevert.

Guaranteed products, a complete business system, online training, and low cost of entry put starting a business with LHN within the reach of anyone. Combined with a depressed job market, forces seem to be conspiring to ensure the continued growth of Liberty Health Network.

Agriculture, health care, small businesses have opportunities - Record

The Business Forecast Conference in Stockton on Thursday also featured four local executives discussing specific segments of the San Joaquin County economy.

They were:

? Bruce Blodgett, the San Joaquin Farm Bureau's executive director. He said the outlook for agriculture is optimistic.

The region's leading industry has quadrupled from $500 million in the 1930s to $2 billion today, in inflation-adjusted figures, even as crops and farm practices have radically changed. The challenge is a tough regulatory environment, leading farm processors to move to places such as Nevada and Texas.

"Our jobs are still expanding, but they are expanding to other states, and they are expanding to other countries," he said.

? Corwin Harper, senior vice president and area manager for Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser is ready to expand as the region grows. "We're going to spend over $600 million in capital projects over the next 10 years" in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties, he said.

But he called on area businesses and individuals to help hold down health care costs through better lifestyle choices and adapting to new service delivery systems, such as getting prescriptions filled online or, perhaps in the future, getting a medical exam at home by interacting with a tablet computer.

? Jose Blanco, principal of the Central Valley Fund. He said the private equity investor sees good opportunities among the small to medium-size businesses it helps finance.

"We're actually pretty positive about the outlook going forward," he said. Blanco said some of the brighter prospects include the health care, agricultural processing and distribution sectors, as well as companies catering to Latino consumers.

He noted that an ice cream maker in Modesto wants to export products to Mexico. "There's a huge consumer market in Mexico."

? Fritz Grupe, chairman and founder of The Grupe Co. The mortgage meltdown, with houses selling for half the cost of building them and completed lots going for 20 cents on the dollar, has killed the home-building business.

"You're not going to (see a home construction recovery) until we get through all these rebuilt properties," he said. However, Grupe does see opportunities in buying residential properties to rent, which generate good cash flow. "Right now, apartments are the hot thing."

This data is not seasonally adjusted, which is the primary reason for the month-over-month drop.

The Bullhorn Job Opportunity Report is calculated based on new job openings across more than 50,000 recruiters and five years of historical data, which includes 13 million analyzed records.

The Westborough Tennis and Swim Club is hosting its Seventh Annual Local Business Health and Wellness Expo on Saturday, Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are invited to attend the event and to check out the club and over 25 local businesses for a day of fun, prizes, discounts, membership specials and giveaways.

This open house expo gives guests an opportunity to learn about ways to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

“Although the Expo was created as an event where local businesses have an opportunity to advertise to the community and our current members, it is also intended to educate the local community on health and wellness issues and create awareness about the importance of physical exercise in one’s life,” said Justin Lundberg, Owner and General Manager of the Westboro Tennis and Swim Club.

Also, on the day of the Expo, the Club is offering no initiation fee, the rest of January free, and a WTSC gift card valued at 10% of your membership dues on new memberships, as well as, discounts on swim, tennis, fitness, camps and children’s programs.  Everyone attending is also eligible to enter a raffle to win a free membership!
