Envoy urges Americans to invest in Pakistan

Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman has urged American investors to benefit from enhanced business opportunities that Pakistan offers in several potential areas.
Speaking to members of US-Pakistan Business Council, the envoy cited the example of fast-growing telecommunications sector, saying telecom companies were aggressively bidding for a market of 100mn mobile users and others should follow the suit.
She highlighted the fact that a number of American companies were already successfully doing business in the country and contributing to better economic relations.
“The Council can greatly help in dispelling adverse perceptions in the US by narrating their business success stories in Pakistan to their fellow investors, political leaders and opinion makers,” she said at the US Chamber of Commerce.
Islamabad, she said, is committed to providing enabling environment and a level-playing field to international investors and has been rated at the top in South Asia for ease in doing business.
The ambassador said one of the key priorities during her assignment in Washington would remain promoting stronger linkages between the private sectors of the two countries.
Despite the continuing global financial crisis and regional situation, Pakistan last year achieved a 28% increase in exports, which were worth $25bn.
“The positive trends have continued in the last seven months, and other macro-economic indicators are showing hopeful signs.”
“We recognise that we have work to do on infrastructure and we seek your assistance on energy investment,” she added. Rehman also reiterated Pakistan’s interest towards concluding a Bilateral Investment Treaty with the United States.
“A free trade agreement with the US is an important priority for Pakistan. I am sure many people present here are fervent advocates of open market and realise the benefits to be achieved from an FTA between the two countries.”
Pakistan and the United States had a robust trading relationship and the current volume of bilateral trade has doubled to $5.50bn.“While this may be a source of some satisfaction on both sides, we firmly believe that the potential for enhancing trade relations between the two countries is far greater than that was has been achieved so far.”
Welcoming the Pakistani ambassador on behalf of members of the US-Pakistan Business Council, Chairman Miles Young said that despite international financial difficulties, the American companies have made substantial profits and continue to prosper.He said the US was committed to advancing joint business goals together with the Pakistani embassy.

Big business owes vets, average Americans some appreciation - Burlington County Times

In reading the letter to the editor from Andy Roscoe, he sounds like he is very educated and a historian, but most of all, he sounds like a die-hard Republican. That's fine. But if opportunities beget opportunities, then why is it that so many of the big businesses that made their wealth off the backs of real Americans who are now homeless, jobless, and without medical protection, have the gall to take their jobs/businesses out of the United States?

Big business also includes professional sports. The U.S. military has gone beyond the call of duty, as they serve this country and protect all businesses. Show me where these men and women get paid $1 millon or more a year (as many professional athletes do). In the military, these brave men and women give their lives and limbs so that sports professionals can play games. They, too, give nothing back to our vets returning home from Bush's war. All big businesses could give some of their money to help these men and women have the life they deserve. There is no human on this earth worth $1 million a year. Since big businesses do not wish to pay taxes on their wealth, how about donating that excess wealth to those who helped make your fortune for you? Donating it to veterans would be a great opportunity for big business to show appreciation for all its wealth.

Roscoe said that America's businesses, supported by the banks, were the backbone prior 2007. Remember President Ronald Reagan's trickle-down economics? Well, from the time that George W. Bush was president this country has been in a free fall due to his lies and deception, which were all backed up by what I call the "Holocaust Republicans." President Barack Obama has had to clean up Bush's messes. The free fall with the debt began when Bush cut taxes for those who backed him. Try not putting any money in the bank for eight years then let's see you pay your bills. Bush should have made sure that his uncalled-for invasion of Iraq was paid for before he defied the United Nations and invaded a country — killing thousands of men, women and children. What you do not understand is that the president at the time was the one who generated the deficit-driven policy, not President Obama.

The letter mentions former Gov. Jim Florio. Is he referring to the 1 cent tax increase? Well, step back and tell me, what is the rate of tax now? Also, your boats all had Bush holes in them before Obama took office.

If the Republicans in Washington had more than a one-word vocabulary, just maybe the country could improve. These jokers forget they are to serve the people of the United States, not those who line their pockets. Do they think they are the "Lone Rangers"? I guess it's an opportunity, right?

Yes, the current Occupy Wall Street protesters here and in other cities are exercising their rights under our Constitution. Those who have abused these people are the "Holocaust Republicans."

Tell me, if the word lazy is incorrect, then why do we have thousands of undocumented people picking our crops, digging our ditches, washing dishes and picking up our trash? They stand in line and jump at every opportunity to work. They are not asking for a handout.

Remember, the wealthy are the ones who caused the deficit. The banks were rescued by the working people, not any big businesses. The banks stole from our vets using deceitful mortgage tactics. Remember that?

Roscoe's letter to the editor really does not serve any purpose. Only die-hard Republicans would applaud him. Remember, Rick Perry does not invest his millions in the United States. Mitt Romney bought into businesses that he knew were going down. (Of course, that must have been an opportunity, right?).

Enjoy the next four years — Obama, Obama, Obama. He's our country's man.
