"Indian businesses and enterprises have rapidly started adopting cloud computing and more so in the fledgling e-Commerce (online travel, auction, retail) segments," he continues. "Most Indian telcos are keen to understand how the market develops in the short term. Currently, the market has seen development activity in IaaS and PaaS."
Key findings of Carrier Cloud India: Opportunities & Challenges include the following:
Carrier cloud is a class of cloud infrastructure that enables telcos to transition their carrier-grade networks to cloud computing and offer cloud-based services to end-customers.Indian operators are targeting SMEs with a suite of cloud services as it becomes crucial to ramp up profitable revenue base. Many telecom operators plan to adopt cloud computing particularly for their captive use, but are cautious about migrating critical data to cloud.Indian SMEs demand a complete suite of apps that will be easier to position and sell in the cloud mode.Indian telcos must aggressively enter the cloud services market and accelerate service offerings to capitalize on this opportunity ahead of them.Carrier Cloud India: Opportunities & Challenges is available as part of an annual single-user subscription (12 monthly issues) to Heavy Reading Insider, priced at $1,995. Discarded idea leads to business opportunity - msnbc.com
After graduating from USC in 1952, LeVan sold scientific instruments for various manufacturers. The companies would take old instruments in trade in order to sell new ones but would discard the old models rather than refurbish and resell them.
Customers would ask LeVan about the availability of old equipment, so he reconditioned discarded analytical instruments in his Fountain Valley garage and sold them on the side. In 1978, LeVan started Genie Scientific to buy, refurbish and sell used scientific equipment, naming the firm for his wife, Jeanne.
LeVan and his children, who now run Genie, exemplify a common entrepreneurial path, picking up and running with ideas that big business ignores. That habit has built Genie into a company with 20 employees with various divisions for new opportunities that crop up from time to time. And they have learned to stop doing what no longer makes economic sense.
"If a customer wants something, don't say no," said son Mel, Genie's second employee.
Mel started working for his dad hunting for used instruments to buy. He expanded into used lab furnishings.
"Our big break came when Cedars of Lebanon Hospital (in Los Angeles) closed," Mel LeVan said. "Genie sold the lab equipment and furniture and customers lined up for it."
As Genie's reputation grew, it became harder to find old furnishings so Mel started his own division, Genie Instruments, to make equipment, specializing in scientific laboratories. Fortunately for Genie, Orange County had plenty of research and development and pharmaceutical labs that needed fume hoods, steel cabinets and other specialized furnishings.
Later, John LeVan's daughter Moya O'Neill joined the company. She had been selling Pitney Bowes machines and needed some extra money, so she was given the company's refurbished airborne particle analyzers to sell.
"I sold them all in 30 days, so Dad had me come to work for Genie," O'Neill recalled. She worked on straight commission and learned more about scientific equipment than she ever did in school.
The most recent family addition to the staff is Mel's son Garrett, who handles the company website and marketing.
Genie couldn't compete with major manufacturers, but excelled at special, custom orders such as fume hoods so large that a human could walk into them, Mel LeVan said. Whatever a customer wanted that it couldn't find in the open market, Genie could make. It has worked with more than 500 customers worldwide, from cosmetic manufacturers to Apple Computer.
One of the keys to survival for 35 years has been the ability to stop doing some things. Genie tried manufacturing in Mexico and in China, but with the help of a California lean manufacturing program, designed to keep companies in the Golden State, Genie has brought the manufacturing work back to Fountain Valley.
"Our customers want it fast and they want quality," O'Neill said. "That's our specialty."
About four years ago, Genie stopped doing what it was created to do, John LeVan said. "They no longer refurbish instruments; no one fixes instruments anymore."
LeVan himself is "retired" at age 89, although he and his dogs come to the office every day. He has a workshop next to his office where he tinkers with inventions such as a topper for keys to make them easier for arthritic people to use and lasers for golf instruction.
But Genie still tries new things when customers ask. O'Neill has started a separate division called Moya Living to make custom steel residential furniture. It currently is working on a big project for a New York City apartment co-op.
"I feel like I've come full circle because I studied design in college," O'Neill said.
Mel LeVan said the separate divisions of Genie uses each family member's strength. "Moya likes the design, but I like fume hoods because of higher profit margins."

Winter Leads to Different Opportunities for Fenton Businesses - Patch
During warmer weather, many local seasonal businesses are as busy as last-minute holiday shoppers.
However, as the searing sun gives way to cooler temperatures, some Fenton traditional summer businesses, such as greenhouses and summer camps, change strategies keep their doors open during winter and keep the cash register ringing.
Many local businesses offer new programs, services and products that are in demand during winter months or adjust their hours of operation in the winter. Many use the off-season time to plan for spring as well.
Michael Rogers, vice president communications for the Small Business Association of Michigan, said this is a common practice in tourism-focused small businesses, especially in tourism areas in the western and northern regions of the state.
Well-known for its flourishing greenhouse in the summer and specialty herbs in the fall, during the winter months Heavenly Scent Herb Farm -- like so many of its customers -- chooses to turn its attention indoors.
“The focus is more on interior decorating,” said Kathy Mathews, who owns Heavenly Scent Herb Farm with her husband, Steve.
The shop is well stocked with gift items, home furnishings, dried floral designs and home décor accessories. The business stays open year-round because customers want it to, Mathews said.
Being open does help with cash flow through the winter months, Mathews said. She added that there are many other benefits: Customers are able to reach staff members after the latest brochure goes out, she shops for new merchandise and the store is redecorated with a fresh look for spring. Because she often works a few months ahead of the calendar, winter tends to fly by, she said.
“Mentally I start thinking about spring in the winter. Before I know it, it’s March,” Mathews said.
While some businesses may close for the season or relocate to Florida in the winter to gain customers and return to northern Michigan in the summer, others continue to keep their doors open, Roger said. An agri-tourism venue that may shift from corn maze tours in the fall to cross country skiing in the winter was one example he cited.
Michigan Landscape Supply Company in Fenton uses off-season time to plan ahead. Store Manager Jim Ray said April through September are a very busy months, so fall and winter gives them time to prepare and get everything ready in time for the start of expo season that kicks into full gear by March.
The store also directs its focus on winter by selling salt products. Michigan Landscape Supply Company is price competitive and carries various salt products, Ray said. The business also sells salt products to contractors in the area. However, the lack of snow and freezing temperatures so far this winter may impact sales of some winter products, Ray said, and he is looking forward for the snowfall to pick up to help spur salt sales and snowplowing efforts.
Being open in the winter benefits the bottom line overall, Ray said. While expenses decrease for items like payroll and fuel in the off season, income gained during the winter months helps with fixed expenses, he added.
One might not think of a summer camp as a prime candidate to stay open during the cold weather, but Camp Copneconic remains committed to outdoor education throughout winter.
Brandon Dreffs, school programs director for the camp, said people don’t have to stay inside during the cold weather months if they dress properly. Camp Copneconic runs more than 40 different winter activities for program participants ranging from tobogganing and sledding to cross-country skiing, ice fishing and ice skating. Some are summer activities with a winter twist, like playing capture the flag with snowballs. Another favorite is snow art, where participants create snow sculptures and then mist their creations with colorful water, he added.
“It’s about creating a bond between kids and nature,” Dreffs said.
The camp’s indoor facilities are also the perfect place for retreats and conferences.
While businesses keeping their doors open in the winter means more local employment and local tax revenue, there are marketing benefits to consider as well, said Rogers. Among those benefits are remaining visible to potential customers and being able to promote the busier summer season to boost business.
Of course, summer is never far from the minds of camp staff members. Dreffs said camp dates have been set and registration is already open for summer 2012 camps.
Rogers said small businesses are crucial to Michigan’s economic success.
“Over half of all workers in Michigan are employed at small businesses, so growth in small business employment – which we expect will be robust in 2012, thanks to the Jan. 1 enactment of business tax reform – will make a big impact in improving our unemployment rate,” said Rogers in an email. “Small businesses have a tremendous positive impact on local communities by contributing local wages, tax revenue, stable employment and a positive sense of place.”
