MVAS to create Rs.48,000 crore business opportunity by 2015 - MSN India

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) Mobile value added services (MVAS) are expected to create a Rs.48,000 crore business opportunity by 2015 owing to increasing mobile Internet penetration. All that is required is innovative and affordable content generation, industry leaders said Friday.

"The story of the value added service on the mobile phone is just the beginning. All products on the mobile phone are for the masses, there is a requirement of creative innovation, which should be cost effective and for masses," said A. K. Bhargava, executive director (wireless service) Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) at VAS Asia 2012, 12th international conference and exhibition.

According to Rajan S. Mathews, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the emergence of the mobile phone as the single device for a host of services has also changed the paradigm in the sector with several discreet devices being displaced in favour of a single device.

Yelti, a mobile marketing firm says that mobile Internet users are expected to surpass the desktop Internet users by 2014.

According to Sukesh Jain, head VAS and content, Bharti Airtel, the total Internet access capability by 2015 is expected to rise from 100 million to 450 million, of which 41 percent will be using mobile only and another 38 percent both cellphone and PC.

The leaders also said that the slow growth of smartphones so far has been holding back the prospect of huge revenues from mobile VAS.

In the first quarter of this year out of 50 million new devices sold out of which smartphones constituted only 2.7 million. The total smartphone base in the country is around 27 million, while the total subscribers base has crossed 929 million.

According to Chandan Ghosh, head-global wholesale and carrier business, Aircel Limited, operators are looking at various means to use MVAS as a growth driver for them falling voice revenues, increasing competition and heavy investments in 3G have made them to turn to VAS to secure their business.

The broad categories for successful monetization of MVAS are in M-education, M-commerce, M-Health and M-Infotainment.

Afghan women entrepreneurs look to India for opportunities - Washington Post

They run fleets of trucks, supply construction material, design software programs and make furniture. Women entrepreneurs in war-torn Afghanistan have been breaking many cultural ceilings in the past decade.

But now, many of them are anxious to find new clients as they prepare for the 2014 drawdown when they may lose their biggest client – the U.S. military bases. And India’s vast and lucrative market is their next frontier.
Afghan entrepreneur Sara Rahmani holds a dress in her Kabul clothing shop March 12, 2005. Afghanistan’s female entrepreneurs are looking to India for business opportunities as the U.S. begins its drawdown. (David Guttenfelder/AP)

“It will be a big challenge once the Americans and the others leave. The local market in Afghanistan has not progressed much,” said Masuma Rezaie, 24-year-old founder of the evocatively named company First Afghan Lady Logistics and Services. “But there is big money in the Indian market.”

To this end, Rezaie and other businesswomen came to New Delhi on Wednesday to seek deals, training and technology from Indian companies. The three-day business-to-business meetings, facilitated by USAID and the Consortium of Women Entrepreneurs of India, comes at a time when the impending withdrawal of the international forces from Afghanistan is also raising concerns about the future of women’s rights to study and work.

Rezaie’s company supplies security equipment, furniture, potable water, generators, construction machinery and laborers to the international military camps and humanitarian groups across Afghanistan.

The war and rebuilding of the nation has birthed many Rosie-the-Riveters in Kabul, who are going beyond handicrafts and textiles. One company is called “Courageous Afghan Women Construction Company & Logistical Services.”

“The Taliban attacked my trucks twice,” Rezaie said. “But not because I am a woman, but because I am doing business with Americans.” She runs an all-women office in Kabul. “We keep the women in the offices to do the brain work, and send the men into the field.”

The organizers hoped business deals will be struck over the next three days.

Another entrepreneur, Malika Qanih, wants to learn the process of manufacturing herbal medicines from Indians.

“Afghanistan is rich in undiscovered, untapped herbs. Big business potential,” said Malika Qanih, 60, chief executive of Sun Pharma. On Friday, she will visit a factory owned by Shahnaz Husain, czarina of Indian herbal cosmetics.

Qanih hopes that Afghan women will not have to go back to the past after 2014. “Many countries have signed strategic partnerships with Afghanistan. I hope they will not forget to protect us even after 2014,” she said.

India assures US business of a level playing field

Washington, June 14 (IANS) Assuring US businesses of "a level playing field" and "total transparency", India has invited them to take advantage of enormous business opportunities offered by India's plans to invest over a trillion dollars in infrastructure development.

"We have assured everyone who would be interested in making investments in India that there is going to be a level playing field and there will be total transparency," Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said Wednesday at a joint press conference after the India-US strategic dialogue.

"With these two parameters being ensured, I am sure that a number of companies from outside India would be willing to participate in this great developmental journey that India is setting out on," he said.

Noting that "there is a degree of scepticism" about the economic content of the India-US relationship, Krishna reiterated that the Indian economy will restore investors' confidence and regain the growth momentum.

"Indian plans to invest more than a trillion dollars on infrastructure development in the coming five years will provide enormous business opportunities which the US companies can consider exploiting," he said. "Openness and growth in the US economy will also support stronger economic ties."

The joint statement issued after the dialogue he co-chaired with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "noted that bilateral trade in goods and services continues to grow and will likely reach $100 billion by the end of 2012".

The joint statement also "called for an expeditious conclusion to negotiations toward a high standard Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) as a key part of the effort to deepen the economic relationship, improve investor confidence, and support economic growth in both countries".

At the outset of the dialogue, Clinton had made an indirect pitch for India opening up its lucrative multi-brand retail for foreign investors, which has been put on hold due to opposition from some of UPA government's key allies like Trinamool Congress.

"We look forward to working to advance negotiations on the bilateral investment treaty, to further reduce barriers to trade and investment in areas like multi-brand retail, and to create hospitable environments for each of our companies to do business in the other's country," she said.

However, the joint statement made no specific reference to "multi-brand retail".

India has already allowed 100 percent FDI in single-brand retail. However, the cabinet decision to allow 51 percent FDI in the multi-brand retail sector has been deferred.

Summary

The market for private label products in India is still in its nascent stages and accounted for just XX% of the overall retail market in 2011. The Indian retail market is highly fragmented and primarily consists of unorganized outlets such as 'kirana' stores. It is expected that organized retail is going to undergo a period of growth over the forecast period. Retailers entered the Indian private labels market by providing staples such as food and beverage products. The positive growth potential of these categories convinced many retailers to enter the personal care market in 2009. The main growth strategy of Indian retailers is to provide consumers with national brands as a trust exercise; as such brands provide a level of quality and assurance to consumers, who are then offered private labels as a discounted alternative. The Future Group recruited national sports icon, Sachin Tendulkar, to create a sub-brand named 'Sach'. In this way, the Group expects to attain national recognition with some consumers and an emotional connection with others. This is the first instance of private label product endorsement in the Indian market. Growth in private labels has resulted in several conflicts between retailers and national brands, owing to issues such as margins, displays and shelf space. Retailers are more inclined to push the sales of private label products as they offer greater profit margins.

Scope

• This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the private label market within the consumer packaged goods industry in India• It provides an overview of key global markets for private label • It provides comparison of private label market share in India with Asian countries and with the key global markets• It provides historical shares for the Indian private label market for the report's 2007–2011 review period and forecast figures for the 2012–2016 forecast period • It highlights the consumer, business and economic factors driving the private label market in India• It covers a summary on the key challenges facing the private label market in India• It details the business strategies of private label brands by retail store formats• It discusses the key emerging product strategies in the Indian private label market• It compares the pricing strategy adopted for private label products in key categories• It outlines the future outlook for the Indian private label market• It profiles the major retailers in the private label market in India

Reasons To Buy

• Make strategic business decisions using top-level historic and forecast market data related to the Indian private label market• Understand the key consumer, business and economic trends within the Indian private label market• Gain insights into the strategies adopted by retailers in different product categories and also across different retail formats• Gain insights into the challenges facing the Indian private label market• Gain insights into the upcoming trends in the Indian private label market

Key Highlights

• The market for private label products in India is still in its early stages and comprised XX% of the overall retail market in 2011. • Private label penetration began in the mid-2000s when retailers established organized retail format stores across the country. • Organized retail occupies a small percentage of the overall retail market in India. Traditional forms of retail, such as neighborhood 'kirana' stores, dominate the market. • The most widely used private label products were cereals, pulses and spices. This was followed by packaged food products and fruits and vegetables.• In 2011, Spencer's Retail revamped its business strategy to focus on the young, urban population.
