A Great American Rethink is well underway. The technological, informational and inspirational barriers to changing any and everything about our lives, our careers, our families and our businesses have evaporated.

Change is the new black.

And the data shows that everyday people, now more than ever, are actually acting on their internal imperative to change themselves and their lives – in a way that is gaining momentum against the age-old, utterly human tendency to crave change, yet stay inert:

We’re rethinking work: For three months running, the government-reported rates of people quitting their jobs has outpaced the rate of those getting laid off, a sky-high “Shove-it Indicator” rate for a job market still plagued by high unemployment . This baffles analysts who expected this to be a one-time anomaly when it first happened in February of this year. The days of the 30-year job are gone, and over a third of the workforce is comprised of freelancers, part-timers, consultants and contractors. We’re rethinking home: Home ownership rates are at a 15 year low, despite the fact that home values seem to be recovering and mortgage rates are at rock-bottom lows. And home ownership rates are down 12.5 percent in Americans under 35 – more than in any other age group – which doesn’t overlap with those who lost homes to foreclosure. Those who can afford to buy remember the recent foreclosure fallout and are cautious with their timing and spending, if and when they do get off the fence. We’re rethinking health: Consumers are taking their health into their own hands. PricewaterhouseCoopers projects that at today’s pace, consumers will spend $14 billion on mobile health apps, video games and resources that rate medical care providers in 2014. To boot, health and fitness measures that were once perceived as extreme have gone mainstream: 13 million Americans completed road races (5Ks, 10Ks, Half-Marathons and Marathons) in 2010 – an all-time record, and a 10% increase over the previous year.

In past generations, aspirations were largely out-of-reach, largely material dreams: A sum certain in the bank. A house in that neighborhood. To hit that particular number on the scale. Many people held the same exact aspirations, in fact, to wit: The American Dream. These were one-and-done dreams, bucket list dreams: you could reach them, check them off, retire and die.

But Boomers’ children? There’s a large segment of us who identify ourselves as life hackers, wellness-and-wealth tinkerers, lifestyle design enthusiasts by nature. The craving for transformation is constant, or at least recurring: it is a way of life. We want to experience and be, versus get: we want to be marathoners and yoginis, be entrepreneurs and be world travelers – not just take a trip around the world.

We crave the transformational experience, the process of change, the process of constantly revisiting what is and isn’t working, where we are and are not dissatisfied, where we could be doing more, bigger, better and making lifestyle, career, business, even health and financial power-tweaks. We crave to be engaged in that process of continual growth, constant evolution almost as much as we crave the actual outcomes themselves.

And – here’s the rub for entrepreneurs and businesses – we fall in love with the brands and technologies and gadgets and personalities (often CEOs, innovators and self-taught experts) that put a stake in the ground and deliver ongoing resources that:

power our aspirations help us reach our goals and change our habits, and fuel the ongoing transformations we want in our lives, our careers, our health and our finances - and help us do all of the above more efficiently, stylishly, enjoyably, effectively (or with less friction, backsliding and pain) than we could otherwise or with previous generations of products or services.

We don’t just try or buy these brands, products and services. We fall deeply in love with them – having an emotional relationship with them that far exceeds what makes sense based strictly on the utility of the product to our lives.

We buy them over and over again, in large quantities. We Tweet @ and about them, we ridicule our Facebook friends who aren’t using them, we blog or post links about them, and we ‘share’ their product page links with our social networks. We read their blogs, wait for their newsletters, watch their videos and comment – we go practice yoga in the streets with them and put our names in lotteries to score tickets to their events.

Non-conformity does not equal anti-consumerism.

I submit that this change-craving segment of the marketplace is a legitimate consumer group: the Transformational Consumer. I also submit that understanding users through the lens of their change-based aspirations equips businesses to better engage and serve them. So maybe the best starting point for exploring this Transformational Consumer group is through the pattern of these aspirations, the common interests and ‘investments’ they are making in improving themselves and their lives:

Health, Fitness and Mind-Body Wellness. This include health clubs and foods (quinoa, anyone?), supplements and recreational sports/wellness activities like, yoga, running, Crossfit, TRX and all the gear that goes along with them. It also includes things like digital health and wellness apps and games, spas, weight management programs, and infomercial fitness videos. Personal Finance. This includes money education and apps, personal finance software, financial and estate planning services – possibly even some real estate, mortgage, banking and investment transactions. Self Management and Behavior Change. This includes all the efforts and investments involved in changing our habits and behaviors, setting and further goals, recovery and reinvention, and managing our own emotions and mindsets, as through therapies and some self-help type books. Personal and Professional Development. Coaching, books, seminars, online educational courses and other workshops for skill-building and upleveling our performance or enjoyment of life – especially in the realm of ‘how-to’ materials, career development and entrepreneurship. Natural and High-Performance Living. Investments in what is put in, on and around their bodies (and those of their kids and pets) – as well as the actual physical spaces in which they live. This includes organic and whole foods, but also spends for green home remodels, natural home and body products and both high- and low-tech organizational and personal electronics for home and lifestyle.

In my quest to build this new way of understanding consumers via the lens of their craving to create change in their own lives and to understand where the edges of this Transformational Consumer group start and end or overlap with other consumer groups, I recently attended the LOHAS Forum, an annual meeting of companies that have long served the ‘Deep Green’ consumer, those engaged in what they call Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability.

It struck me that virtually all LOHAS consumers are Transformational Consumers – but not all Transformational Consumers are LOHAS consumers.  (Transformational Consumers are probably a much lighter, somewhat less altruistic shade of green.) But get this: the Natural Marketing Institute tallies the LOHAS marketplace as covering $290 Billion in annual spending on personal health, natural lifestyles, green building, eco-tourism and alternative modes of energy and transportation, and estimates that this number has a 10-15 percent annual growth rate.

This dollar amount, then, would seem like just the starting point for quantifying the spending power and market opportunity presented by the Transformational Consumer sector.

Transformational Consumers vote for lifestyle design with their dollars. They may eschew overly ostentatious consumer luxury goods, but will actually overspend on high-end, high-performance natural cosmetic, food, sports, autos and tech products – for themselves, their homes, their children and even their pets.  They will spend more on wearable fitness trackers and online entrepreneurship courses than on a logo handbag – unless, that is, the logo is lululemon’s.

I’m not saying that these values are good or bad, or that they are better or worse than the priorities of any other consumer group or generation. Rather, I am pointing out that there is an unrecognized consumer segment – the Transformational Consumer – that industries and innovators can better understand and engage via their singular desire to constantly uplevel and create change in their lives, careers, health and personal finances, rather than by their demographics or even other sophisticated psychographic segmentation approaches, e.g., Alpha Moms, Succeeders, etc.

I’m also pointing out that this is a consumer segment with billions in spending power and evangelistic largesse to deploy with the brands that authentically connect with them around these aspirations.

Afghan women entrepreneurs look to India for opportunities - Washington Post

They run fleets of trucks, supply construction material, design software programs and make furniture. Women entrepreneurs in war-torn Afghanistan have been breaking many cultural ceilings in the past decade.

But now, many of them are anxious to find new clients as they prepare for the 2014 drawdown when they may lose their biggest client – the U.S. military bases. And India’s vast and lucrative market is their next frontier.
Afghan entrepreneur Sara Rahmani holds a dress in her Kabul clothing shop March 12, 2005. Afghanistan’s female entrepreneurs are looking to India for business opportunities as the U.S. begins its drawdown. (David Guttenfelder/AP)

“It will be a big challenge once the Americans and the others leave. The local market in Afghanistan has not progressed much,” said Masuma Rezaie, 24-year-old founder of the evocatively named company First Afghan Lady Logistics and Services. “But there is big money in the Indian market.”

To this end, Rezaie and other businesswomen came to New Delhi on Wednesday to seek deals, training and technology from Indian companies. The three-day business-to-business meetings, facilitated by USAID and the Consortium of Women Entrepreneurs of India, comes at a time when the impending withdrawal of the international forces from Afghanistan is also raising concerns about the future of women’s rights to study and work.

Rezaie’s company supplies security equipment, furniture, potable water, generators, construction machinery and laborers to the international military camps and humanitarian groups across Afghanistan.

The war and rebuilding of the nation has birthed many Rosie-the-Riveters in Kabul, who are going beyond handicrafts and textiles. One company is called “Courageous Afghan Women Construction Company & Logistical Services.”

“The Taliban attacked my trucks twice,” Rezaie said. “But not because I am a woman, but because I am doing business with Americans.” She runs an all-women office in Kabul. “We keep the women in the offices to do the brain work, and send the men into the field.”

The organizers hoped business deals will be struck over the next three days.

Another entrepreneur, Malika Qanih, wants to learn the process of manufacturing herbal medicines from Indians.

“Afghanistan is rich in undiscovered, untapped herbs. Big business potential,” said Malika Qanih, 60, chief executive of Sun Pharma. On Friday, she will visit a factory owned by Shahnaz Husain, czarina of Indian herbal cosmetics.

Qanih hopes that Afghan women will not have to go back to the past after 2014. “Many countries have signed strategic partnerships with Afghanistan. I hope they will not forget to protect us even after 2014,” she said.

Best Opportunities For Entrepreneurs In China Today Are In Service Industry, Acer's Stan Shih Says - Forbes

Retired Acer chairman and founder Stan Shih has been more successful than most at when it comes to starting a business.  From its early days in the 1970s, Acer has spawned businesses whose sales totaled about $66 billion last year, including its own computer business and U.S.-listed LCD panel maker AU Optronics.

After a speech about business culture at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai last night, I talked with Shih about, among other things, what he considers to be the most promising businesses for entrepreneurs in China today.

Shih said the answer depends on whether the entrepreneur wants to be a pioneer or get involved in a “me-too” business.   Shih once wrote a book called “Me-Too Is Not My Style,” so I imagine he doesn’t want to go there.

To develop a business in China or elsewhere, Shih said, “you have to take time to develop your competitiveness.”  Acer itself was like that, too,  early on, he said.  Microprocessor technology wasn’t mature when the company was founded as Multitech in 1976.   “I was looking for the long run, and took a step-by-step approach.”

So what about opportunity in China today?

“It isn’t in manufacturing,” he said before giving the answer:  “Services.”

“Services are going to grow,” in the future, he says. “There is a lot of room for value creation.”

Time was up.  Shih, though no longer chairman at Acer, is on the board of directors at TSMC and Acer, too, and leads an investment company, iD SoftCapital.  It will be interesting to see whether the companies Shih is still associated with today can take advantage of those new opportunities he sees in China in the coming years.

PostNet Joins DECA to Connect With Next Generation of Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs

DENVER, May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- To help prepare students for the challenges and opportunities associated with small-business ownership, PostNet, America's first Neighborhood Business Center, has strategically partnered with DECA, the international organization dedicated to preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

Through the partnership, nearly 400 PostNet franchise locations across the US will have the opportunity to work with DECA's local chapters to develop a curriculum to educate high school and college students about what it takes to succeed in an entrepreneurial endeavor, particularly in franchising. PostNet will sponsor and judge competitive events among students, and PostNet's co-founders will also participate in the Executive Mentorship Program.

"Working with DECA to invest in today's students provides us with a unique opportunity to further our mission of fostering small-business growth in America," said Steve Greenbaum, CEO of PostNet. "We're also providing our franchisees with a tremendous opportunity to work with driven, business-minded individuals to problem-solve, reach new customers, and achieve greater business objectives."

Greenbaum, along with PostNet co-founder, Brian Spindel, are fully aware of the unique challenges entrepreneurs face when launching and growing a small business – they've lived it for nearly 30 years. Greenbaum and Spindel opened their first pack-and-ship store in 1983 when shipping options in the growing market were sparse, and, by 1992, had helped more than 400 entrepreneurs start their own, independent mail and parcel businesses. In 1991 they began the development of the PostNet business and communication center concept and began franchising PostNet in July of 1993.

Today, PostNet has evolved with technology to meet the changing needs of small-business owners and busy consumers as America's first Neighborhood Business Center. The company attributes its success to constant innovation and working closely with each client to identify their objectives, build upon their ideas, and develop the best solution to meet their needs. This could include anything from designing and printing custom invitations or signage for an important company event, to helping create a brand image for a new or existing business looking to re-invent itself. (PostNet also offers freedom of choice for the customer as a multi-carrier of shipping services including FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service).

"One of the key measurements to our programs success is the ability to connect our teachers and students with businesses and truly provide them with real world knowledge and experiences to achieve college and world readiness," said John Fistolera, assistant executive director of corporate and external affairs with DECA. "PostNet's interest in connecting with the schools in the communities where they do business is in direct alignment with our mission and PostNet's corporate interests."

About PostNet

Founded in 1993, Denver-based PostNet has more than 700 locations worldwide, including several hundred U.S. locations. Each locally owned and operated PostNet Neighborhood Business Center specializes in meeting the design, printing, copying and shipping needs of businesses and busy consumers, with a focus on exceptional, personal customer service. PostNet centers offer full-service digital printing; full- and self-service copying; document binding and finishing; and services like graphic design, computer rental stations, private mailbox rentals and more. They also offer expert packaging services and shipping with UPS, FedEx, DHL and the U.S. Postal Service. To learn more, visit www.postnet.com.

The Business Finance Store discusses a funding opportunity for women entrepreneurs from Ernst & Young.

Santa Ana, CA (PRWEB) April 10, 2012

Venture-Capital firms raised $4.88 billion in funding in the first quarter of 2012, the National Venture Capital Association and Bloomberg reported. The amount is the highest raised since the second quarter of 2009. Interestingly enough, when looking at the top entrepreneurs and small business owners, men significantly outnumber women. However, opportunities for women entrepreneurs do exist. In the recent blog post “Calling all Women Entrepreneurs- Apply by April 30!” The Business Finance Store discusses a funding opportunity for women entrepreneurs from Ernst & Young.

Many of the great businesses in America today were started by men, but that doesn’t have to be the case in the future. Franchise Centered Program Offers Business Opportunity for Entrepreneurs and Corporate Refugees Seeking New Opportunities - 24-7PressRelease.com

BETHESDA, MD, March 10, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nothing in life is guaranteed, of course. But after this type of preparation: 11 volumes and 1000 pages, 13 weeks of mentoring and coaching, days of intense coursework, a business owner who is opening a franchise knows as much as possible to ensure the success of an investment. The end result is a franchise system that continues growing and succeeding four decades after the first office was opened.

"Our training program is so basic it is almost redundant but we have an almost zero franchise failure rate because of it," says David Banfield, president of the alternative financing firm The Interface Financial Group. "Our long time franchise owners train and guide the new folks coming into our system so our new franchise owners have everything needed to be successful."

Banfield reports many long-term unemployed workers as well as entrepreneurs looking to own their own business are contacting him to inquire about franchise opportunities. Banfield says these prospective owners have heard IFG's training program and the company's low franchise failure rate. In addition, IFG franchises are inexpensive to open, can be run out of a house and provides a career that is not only entrepreneurial but also flexible.
IFG franchisees provide short-term working capital to small and medium sized businesses through invoice discounting. IFG's service allows a company to use their unpaid invoices to accelerate their cash flow and meet current financial obligations. Clients can be provided with access to instant capital within 2 -4 business days. The service is transactional, allowing businesses to use it as often as they need it. This easy and fast form of short term financing offers small business owners the opportunity to access cash quickly without having to wait for their outstanding invoices to be paid. IFG's service is in high demand in today's economy because many small businesses are struggling with cash flow issues to meet payroll or add inventory but do not qualify for a traditional bank loan.

DARYL'S STORY
Daryl Turko worked in the oil and gas industry for 15 years until he was laid off. He explored various opportunities through an outplacement service and finally settled on buying an IFG franchise. 15 years later, Turko carries just a handful of clients in a very manageable portfolio. Turko says his leads first came from contacts mostly in the banking arena but many more are now coming through referrals from existing clients.

"IFG promised to provide all the training and support I would need and they've delivered," says Turko. "I'm my own boss, I work out of my house, and I've been able to adjust my schedule through the years to fit my family.

IFG celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and is consistently ranked one of the top franchises among Entrepreneur magazine.

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if their ICT or e-business ideas are viable. On average, half of Startup Weekend attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business, marketing or non-technical backgrounds.

Beginning with brief pitches to outline their idea on Thursday, attendees aim to inspire other participants to join their team. Over Friday and Saturday the teams will focus on customer development, validating their ideas and building a minimal viable product before presenting their prototypes and receiving valuable feedback from a panel of experts who will select the winning ideas.

Batelco Group General Manager Media Relations Ahmed Al Janahi explained that it's not necessary for participants to have a business idea or plan of their own in order to enter the event as everyone will be placed into teams on the first day of the event.

Student entrepreneurs expand opportunities - Daily Free Press

Boston University School of Management senior Paul Hlatky had been working for Greenhorn Connect, a website that connects entrepreneurs in the Boston area, when he realized he could create a similar resource for college-aged entrepreneurs.

“People are doing a lot of really awesome things, but it’s fragmented,” Hlatky, the director of community and student relations at Greenhorn Connect, said.

While Hlatky said the environment for entrepreneurs is great in Boston, the major problem within the community is the lack of communication.

Hlatky said the problem is no one knows about the great entrepreneurial environment and college students feel like they have nothing to contribute, which is just not the case.

“Even if it’s just a discussion or a networking event you can just hang out and meet people with similar interests,” he said.

A few months ago, Hlatky contacted the student leaders of business and entrepreneur groups at most of the city’s major universities. After connecting with the leaders individually, Hlatky organized a meeting at the Cambridge Innovation Center.

This was the beginning of the Student Tech Startup Group, comprised of college entrepreneurs from BU, Brandeis University, Northeastern University and other institutions.

“Our goal is to connect the students leading entrepreneurial efforts on their respective campuses in one organization,” said Cory Bolotsky, a Northeastern sophomore concentrating in business administration, and an executive board member of Northeastern’s Entrepreneurs Club, in an email. “The students all want to know each other and learn from each other, but because there are so many schools in the Boston-area each working on dozens of different projects it’s hard for them to connect.”

Brandeis junior Todd Kirkland, who is concentrating in computer science, said the group centralizes its goal around entrepreneurship, and Boston is a blooming area for that field.

The group feels that students do want to have input and get involved, so it seeks to tell members about business opportunities, Kirkland said.

“It’s an incredible place for a student to be involved and something that people definitely want at the university level and beyond,” Hlatky said.

Northeastern senior Greg Skloot, president of the school’s Entrepreneurs Club, said Boston is probably one of the best places a college entrepreneur can be.

Bolotsky also said entrepreneurialism coincides with the concentration of colleges in one area.

“It’s not a coincidence that we have the most densely concentrated entrepreneurial communities in the world,” he said. “The innovative work in Boston is a byproduct of the [more than] 65 outstanding colleges and universities in the area and the community understands that and supports and embraces student entrepreneurs.”

Hlatky said while there were between 10 and 13 students at the first meeting, the group has been receiving more than 15 requests a week on Facebook.

The group has committed leaders and some defined goals, but they also have a lot to figure out in order to be an organized and connected group. Skloot said some things to consider are whether every student entrepreneur in Boston will be involved or only people heading off the organization at each school.

“Do they want it to be a real organization with a brand or is it just kind of an informal thing?” Skloot said. “I think these are all challenges that somebody’s going to have to figure out in the next couple months.”

In the near future, the group will try to answer some of these questions and better define the group’s purpose.

“Right now we are working to develop a name, mission, leadership structure and legitimize ourselves as a formal association,” Bolotsky said.

Bolotsky said when the fall comes, the group will probably host monthly or bi-monthly board meetings.

“The main thing is that we’re trying to address issues at each respective school and seeing how we can better solve those issues and collaborate more,” Kirkland said.

Hlatky said that the members want this to be a very supportive, open group.

“This group’s main purpose is to build relationships,” he said. “We’re trying to just keep as many people involved in startups in Massachusetts as possible, and if anything, just raise awareness for it. So we’re all just very excited for what’s going to come of it.”

Ten-week program gives entrepreneurs a business crash course - Courier-Journal

Alex Frommeyer and his two partners in Beam Technologies have developed several dental-health products, including a toothbrush paired with a smartphone app that monitors daily brushing and, if you want, sends reports to your dentist.

But besides bright ideas, young high-tech entrepreneurs like Frommeyer, 24, need business training to get their inventions to market quickly.

Frommeyer got a crash course in entrepreneurship through the Kauffman FastTrac TechVenture program, offered by two Louisville business-development organizations ? Nucleus, an initiative of the University of Louisville Foundation, and InnovateLTC, a Louisville center for long-term-care innovation.

Over a 10-week period last spring, he and about 15 other entrepreneurs with startup companies met downtown one night a week to learn from experienced business operators, venture capitalists, business lawyers and others.

They received individual coaching and mentoring, refined their companies? business plans, made valuable contacts, compared notes with their peers, and honed their ?elevator speech? ? a two-minute pitch aimed at possible investors.

Besides education, they met professionals whom in some cases they later hired to provide valuable patenting help or accounting services, or even found angel investors to put money into their companies.

?The connections that you have an opportunity to make are incredible,? said Frommeyer, CEO of Beam.

So was the advice, he said. For example, his FastTrac coach suggested that instead of contracting with a manufacturer to produce one of Beam?s products ? then trying to sell it themselves ? Frommeyer and his partners should consider a licensing deal in which the manufacturer would pay for rights to make and sell the product. Beam would avoid risk and wouldn?t need a sales force.

That ?really redirected the entire business plan, because we decided we should commercialize the product in a completely different way,? Frommeyer said.

Nucleus and InnovateLTC are about to hold their third session of Kauffman FastTrac classes, a program of the entrepreneurship-focused Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City.

Entrepreneurs from 25 startups have graduated from the program, said Vickie Yates Brown, CEO of Nucleus. She said the next two series of classes will include 10 military veterans whose tuition will be paid by a grant from the Obama administration to help veterans start businesses.

Alicia Heazlitt, market research manager for InnovateLTC, said her organization and Nucleus began talking about establishing a new local program for entrepreneurs not long after InnovateLTC was created in 2010. She said they set out to find an offering that would ?really help them go to market quicker, and really arm them with the right information.?

They settled on the Kauffman program, and Nucleus and Innovate LTC employees underwent training to become FastTrac facilitators.

In return for tuition ? $895 per person, or $400 for the second and third person from the same startup ? FastTrac attendees meet and learn from a roster of volunteer speakers and business coaches from fields such as finance, law and marketing.

They include well-known Louisville business names such as venture capitalist Bob Saunders; serial entrepreneur Kent Oyler, who has co-founded 18 business ventures; and Mayor Greg Fischer, a former businessman who co-invented the SerVend ice and beverage dispenser.

?Every week, it?s just sort of a Who?s Who of our community that comes in to say, ?I?m willing to work with you, help you, and try to mentor you,?? Brown said.

She said graduates have later said they couldn?t have become involved with such people on their own, and that such introductions ?made a real difference in helping them to become more successful.?

?It connects you to the people who are really plugged in to the business scene in Louisville. You?re really connected with the movers and shakers,? said Todd Deetsch, who attended the course last fall. ?It?s a great resource.?

Deetsch, president of Psyche Comfort Products, has developed a memory-foam pillow shaped to let mask-wearing sleep apnea patients sleep on their side.

He was trying to build his company based on what he had learned through trial and error in other ventures until he heard of the FastTrac program and enrolled to get more systematic training.

The course took him through the process of launching a business, from developing a concept to satisfying investors? expectations, he said.

He also developed relationships with professionals who have continued to work with his company after the fall sessions ended.

?I think the Kauffman (program) is good because we each speak our own language. There?s the scientists speaking the language of science, and then there?s the businessmen speaking the language of business,? Deetsch said.

?I think Kauffman is kind of a bridge to connect us, so that we can understand each other. That?s what I thought was useful about the program.?
