Best Opportunities For Entrepreneurs In China Today Are In Service Industry, Acer's Stan Shih Says - Forbes

Retired Acer chairman and founder Stan Shih has been more successful than most at when it comes to starting a business.  From its early days in the 1970s, Acer has spawned businesses whose sales totaled about $66 billion last year, including its own computer business and U.S.-listed LCD panel maker AU Optronics.

After a speech about business culture at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai last night, I talked with Shih about, among other things, what he considers to be the most promising businesses for entrepreneurs in China today.

Shih said the answer depends on whether the entrepreneur wants to be a pioneer or get involved in a “me-too” business.   Shih once wrote a book called “Me-Too Is Not My Style,” so I imagine he doesn’t want to go there.

To develop a business in China or elsewhere, Shih said, “you have to take time to develop your competitiveness.”  Acer itself was like that, too,  early on, he said.  Microprocessor technology wasn’t mature when the company was founded as Multitech in 1976.   “I was looking for the long run, and took a step-by-step approach.”

So what about opportunity in China today?

“It isn’t in manufacturing,” he said before giving the answer:  “Services.”

“Services are going to grow,” in the future, he says. “There is a lot of room for value creation.”

Time was up.  Shih, though no longer chairman at Acer, is on the board of directors at TSMC and Acer, too, and leads an investment company, iD SoftCapital.  It will be interesting to see whether the companies Shih is still associated with today can take advantage of those new opportunities he sees in China in the coming years.

Small Business Strategies: Slow summer can be opportunity - USA Today

Memorial Day, the unofficial kickoff of summer, is here.

Some small businesses, especially those in the travel or hospitality industries, will be having their busy season.

For the rest of us, summer can mean the doldrums: Fewer customers. Prospects out on vacation. Lower income. And a house full of kids and visitors to top it all off.

What's a small-business owner to do?

You could sit by a pool and drown your sorrows in a margarita. (I'll take mine on the rocks with salt, thank you very much.) But if you can't afford that, I've got six steps to help grow a more successful small business this summer.

1. Make a splash on social media. You've been meaning to learn how to use one of the many social-media sites — such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Twitter — for your business, but you've just been too busy.

Use these slower summer months to spend some time figuring out which ones are right for you. Be sure to check out some of the many tools that make ongoing management of your social media activities easier and faster, such as HootSuite or Roost.

2. Network like crazy. All those backyard barbecues, softball games, and pool parties you get invited to are potential networking events, especially when they involve more than immediate family and friends.

If you're not getting many invitations, check out what's going on in your community. Try going to a Meetup group, Chamber of Commerce mixers, even neighborhood chili cook-off. Be sure to bring your business cards, mingle, and have a good elevator pitch ready so people you meet can easily remember what you do.

3. Update — or launch — your website. If you're like me, your website is outdated, but you haven't had the time to freshen it up.

Perhaps you don't have a website at all.

Summer is a good time to give your website a facelift. It doesn't have to be extensive, but make sure you have all the newest — and correct — information. Perhaps you want to add some e-commerce functionality, so customers can buy directly from you. And check to see that it looks good on mobile devices, too.

4. Turn those business cards into gold. I know you've got a stack of business cards from people you've met, but they're not doing you any good lying around your desk.

Yes, I know they take time to enter into a database. But, hey, it's summer. It's the perfect opportunity to get all these contacts into something like Salesforce or PipelineDeals. At least enter their contact info into your digital address book in Microsoft Outlook or Gmail.

If you have a ton of cards, like I do, you might want to buy a digital business card reader. They work fairly well now.

5. Start a simple e-mail newsletter. I'm a huge fan; I've got a monthly newsletter of my own with business tips.

They're easy to create and manage, and they keep your name as well as any specials or news in front of prospects and customers. Once you have names in a database or Microsoft Excel file, it's easy to import them into a simple newsletter program.

Or you can just enter the info into the e-mail newsletter service.

We use Emma, but other options include include Constant Contact; Vertical Response; and a free or inexpensive one that many small-business owners use, such as Mail Chimp. If you're very ambitious, you could even write 12 newsletters in summer and have monthly newsletters ready for the whole year.

6. Tackle a project. We all have a wish list of projects we would like to take care of someday.

You may have some new products or services in mind to develop, a new marketing campaign, organizing inventory, or cleaning out a back room to turn into an office.

Summer is a good time to take care of at least one of these. You'll feel a real sense of accomplishment if you do.

Of course, summer is also a good time for recharging your batteries. So maybe sitting by the pool with a margarita isn't such a bad idea.

‘Ring fence’ Your Existing Clients

Competition in the market place is rife. More and more companies are looking to replace lost revenue and profitability through acquiring new business – and some of the ‘new business’ your competitors are targeting will include your existing accounts! In order for you to stay ahead of the competition you need to ‘ring fence’ your existing clients.

Don’t get complacent with your existing customer base. Your customers have got you to where you are today. And they are still a valuable asset for further revenue if made to feel valued.

Pick up the phone give them a call! Find out what challenges they are facing, find out what benefits they are getting from using your existing products and services, remind them of these benefits and the value they are getting. Find out if the competition has been in and what was compelling about their service.

If you run an internet based business then make sure you have an email sequence in place that delivers great value to your customers. Reminding them exactly of who you are and what you do for them, but also what you can do in the future.

Know Your Prospect inside Out

What did he have for breakfast? What color socks does he wear? What Coffee does he drink at Starbucks? Maybe that’s a little extreme…

You do want to know what makes him tick, what keeps him up at night, what one problem could you solve for your customer that would have him diving into his pocket and producing an open wallet right now? What are his life ambitions and goals? Take time to find out exactly who your customer is!

When you know more about your prospect it means you can develop your content marketing strategy to specifically target that person. Talking to their specific wants and needs and ultimately reducing the sales cycle.

As a small business entrepreneur you probably already feel that there are not enough hours in the day right? However now you know who your ideal prospect is you can manage your time more wisely.

Get yourself positioned wherever your client is likely to go, be the person giving the answer to the questions he is posing, provide new and valued insights that will drive revenue and help solve problems in his business.

If you work in a methodic manner to fill your pipeline with the ideal client then you can afford to lose a percentage of those clients. I know that is counter intuitive but the fact is you will not convert 100% of the clients in your pipeline. You just won’t!

Invest in yourself

Dominican industry leaders explore business opportunities in Haiti - Domican Today

Santo Domingo.– Dominican industry leaders met with Thierry Mayard-Paul, Haiti's minister of Interior and Local Authorities, to explore business opportunities existing in Haiti.

According to Jaime Malla, the president of Productos Quimicos Industriales, the meeting was very productive. "I think it's like a platform, these steps are highly significant."

Minister Mayard Pau informed the Dominicans industrialists that President Michel Martelly wanted to turn Haiti into a nation socially just, politically independent, with a free economy, decentralized and sustainable.

He also expressed his satisfaction with the positive attitude of the Dominican delegation. "The Dominican businessmen were able to appreciate, visually, our will to grow from a free market economy and through a decentralization plan based on job creation, not only in Port-au-Prince, but especially in our province cities."
