PSP urges private sector to exploit DTC relocation

PSP urges private sector to exploit DTC relocation KEIKANTSE LESEMELA
Correspondent The private sector has been urged to utilise business opportunities inherent in the relocation of the Diamond Trading Company (DTC) from London to Gaborone.

The permanent secretary to the president, Eric Molale told private business owners at the Botswana Confederation of Commerce, Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM) AGM yesterday that government wants to ensure that the relocation of DTC generates business opportunities for Batswana."We want to ensure that the DTC relocation generates business opportunities and attracts unrelated businesses by individuals. We need to move DTC into Botswana not just as a marketing platform for development but also to create economic sustainability," said Molale.

He noted that since 67 percent of the world diamonds come from Botswana, the relocation seeks to ensure that Batswana participate in diamond processing. Molale explained to BOCCIM members that diamond revenues are expected to decline around 2026 as the value of the resource declines at the world richest mine, Jwaneng. He revealed that opportunities exist across sectors such as education, tourism, minerals and many others. The relocation of the DTC will see P45 billion worth of diamond business passing through the local banking system with  60 to 70 international diamond business persons coming to Gaborone at least ten times a year to buy diamonds.  Molale however urged business owners to offer quality services, as most workers who will come here expect such services as quality education.  He advised that the tourism sector also has to prime itself for the visitors."The tourism industry lacks quality and promptness. We need to ensure that our services are of a high quality standard," he noted.

Summary

Private labels accounted for a market share of XX% in Brazil in 2007. This figure grew by XX% during the review period to reach a market share of XX% in 2011. The global financial crisis led to consumers becoming more value-conscious. Brazilian consumers have become more willing to try private label products at the expense of branded products in order to save on their grocery expenditure.

The growing share of organised retail in Brazil meant that retailers continued to improve on the quality of their private label products and started marketing them between the leading and discounted brands. While the low cost of private labels continued to be the key driving factor, manufacturers started entering the premium market by offering high value products. Over the forecast period, private labels are expected to record positive growth and be driven by consumer demand for high-value products.

There is an increasing trend of collaborative product development in the Brazilian market. As a part of this trend, companies are involving consumers in product development activity. Some of Brazil's key private label product categories include paper napkins, paper towels, alcoholic drinks, carpet cleaner and disinfectant.

Largest Private U.S. Water Utilities Exchange Subsidiaries - Business Wire

Aqua America purchases American Water’s Ohio operations; sells its New York operations to American Water

BRYN MAWR, Pa.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Aqua America, Inc. (NYSE: WTR) announced today that it has completed the purchase of all of American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK) regulated operations in Ohio and simultaneously sold its regulated operations in New York to American Water. Aqua America is the largest investor-owned water utility in Ohio.

“Additionally, Ohio and Texas are energy-rich states with growth opportunities for the water-energy nexus that could have a positive impact on the future of our company.”

The purchase, for $101 million in cash plus assumed debt of $11 million, yielded Aqua America eight additional water systems and one wastewater system in Ohio, which serve approximately 50,730 water and approximately 6,550 wastewater connections. The systems serve parts of nine counties primarily in central and northeast Ohio. The acquisition increases Aqua Ohio’s customer base by approximately 66 percent and adds approximately $95 million in additional rate base. The transaction is expected to improve operating efficiency at Aqua Ohio as it spreads fixed costs over 57,280 more customers in that state, which should have a positive impact on future rates for customers.

In a separate agreement, Aqua America sold its seven New York water systems, which serve approximately 50,520 customers to American Water’s New York subsidiary for approximately $39 million in cash plus assumed debt of $23 million. The New York systems had approximately $46 million of rate base. The sale of Aqua America’s New York operations will conclude its operations in that state.

The purchase prices for both the Ohio and New York transactions are subject to certain post-closing adjustments.

This is the latest of five successful transactions Aqua America has completed in a one-year period to grow and consolidate its customer base in fewer states, improving its operating efficiency, while pruning assets in areas that do not present those opportunities. Since May 2011, Aqua America has sold its Missouri operations to American Water; purchased American Water’s Texas operations; and sold its Maine operations to Connecticut Water.

“This transaction is the latest and the largest of several acquisitions and purchases we have completed to transform the company by maximizing efficiencies and concentrating our efforts in states where we have critical mass,” said Aqua America Chairman and CEO Nicholas DeBenedictis. “Additionally, Ohio and Texas are energy-rich states with growth opportunities for the water-energy nexus that could have a positive impact on the future of our company.”

DeBenedictis said the company is prepared to take a responsible and active role in what is becoming the next energy boom in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and some other states—natural gas drilling. “Shale drilling for natural gas is a very water-intensive business that can provide an economic boost well into the future if it’s done right environmentally.”

The acquisition of American Water’s Ohio operations and the sale of its New York operations are consistent with Aqua America’s strategy to concentrate its customer portfolio in states that demonstrate a positive regulatory environment, while leveraging greater economies of scale and customer growth opportunities. Priority is given to states that provide a regulatory opportunity for capital investment surcharges and consolidated rates, which help the company to maintain water quality and reliable service for its customers.

Aqua America is one of the largest U.S.-based, publicly-traded water utilities and serves almost 3 million residents in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, Indiana, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. Aqua America is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WTR.

This release contains forward-looking statements within the meaning of The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 that address, among other things, the size of the transactions, the effect of the acquisition of the Ohio operations and other transactions on the Company and the anticipated benefits of these transactions, the Company’s strategy to focus its growth efforts in certain states, and the potential efficiencies from focusing on those states and potential business opportunities in those states. There are important factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from those expressed or implied by such forward-looking statements including: the risk that the acquired company’s business will not be successfully integrated; the costs related to the transaction; the risk that anticipated benefits will not be obtained or will not be obtained within the time anticipated; and other key factors that we have indicated could adversely affect our business and financial performance discussed in our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2011, which is on file with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Neither Aqua America nor American Water is under any obligation (and each expressly disclaims any such obligation) to update or alter its forward-looking statements whether as a result of new information, future events, or otherwise.

Summary

The market for private label products in India is still in its nascent stages. The Indian retail market is highly fragmented and primarily consists of unorganized outlets such as kirana' stores. It is expected that organized retail is going to undergo a period of growth over the forecast period. Retailers entered the Indian private labels market by providing staples such as food and beverage products. The positive growth potential of these categories convinced many retailers to enter the personal care market in 2009. The main growth strategy of Indian retailers is to provide consumers with national brands as a trust exercise; as such brands provide a level of quality and assurance to consumers, who are then offered private labels as a discounted alternative. The Future Group recruited national sports icon, Sachin Tendulkar, to create a sub-brand named Sach'. In this way, the Group expects to attain national recognition with some consumers and an emotional connection with others. This is the first instance of private label product endorsement in the Indian market. Growth in private labels has resulted in several conflicts between retailers and national brands, owing to issues such as margins, displays and shelf space. Retailers are more inclined to push the sales of private label products as they offer greater profit margins.

Summary
The market for private label products in India is still in its nascent stages and accounted for just XX% of the overall retail market in 2011. The Indian retail market is highly fragmented and primarily consists of unorganized outlets such as ‘kirana’ stores. The Future Group recruited national sports icon, Sachin Tendulkar, to create a sub-brand named ‘Sach’. Market Analysis

Beyond Facebook: 5 Ways To Monetize Private Networks

Guest post written by Richard Davis

Richard Davis is CEO of Avectra, a provider of membership management software.

Richard Davis: Friend your peers.

Social networking is no longer just for personal connections. The business community has embraced social networking and it is constantly evolving to create new business opportunities for individuals and corporations. While the larger online communities such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ are wildly popular, there are other online communities geared toward specific interests or demographics that can be even more valuable to business professionals. However, maximizing the potential of these private communities takes time and skill.

Private online communities such as those for industry and professional associations or for non-profit organizations provide their audiences with the exact content and professional interaction they are seeking. With a captive audience of like-minded individuals under one virtual roof, you now have an ideal situation to market goods and services that can go beyond basic annual dues or membership fees. Let’s explore leading ways private online communities can maximize their revenues through various monetization methods.

The five main ways to monetize your private online community include:

With a community of people interested in your subject matter, developing advertising specifically tailored to this audience can lead to a significant bump in sales. Advertising through social networks can be delivered through banner ads, direct messages or through messaging based on the user’s online activities.

According to eMarketer, social network advertising is expected to reach $5.54 billion this year and will grow to $10 billion by 2013. While the bulk of this money will go to Facebook, there are still ample advertising growth opportunities for other social networking sites.

Premium Content/Premium Subscription

Offering a free basic membership to your community members is a great way to build up your community. As the community grows and its members continue to interact and seek out more information or engagement, offering them fee-based premium content such as best practice case studies and whitepapers, or exclusive access to podcasts or webinars, can continue to keep your members engaged in the community and provide you with additional revenue opportunities.

Premium content which can advance members’ knowledge of their industry or profession and lead to career advancement is extremely valuable. This type of information helps make your online community relevant. Stay current with your members’ needs and you’ll keep them from looking elsewhere to meet their information needs.

If your online community targets a specific industry, it’s logical to post job listings from other job search organizations seeking candidates with the skill set your members have. Charging a fee to these job recruiters on a per-ad or retainer basis is the best way to go.

According to a recent report in Business News Daily, 80 percent of surveyed HR professionals use social network sites in their hiring process. While the majority of those surveyed cite LinkedIn as the main site they use, the report also stated that many companies are developing their own social networking sites and using them to post jobs, job training, and benefits and incentives programs.

Online communities dedicated to specific industries or professions have an advantage over more general purpose social networks because they are servicing the professionals with the specific skill set that hiring managers need. And you can tap into Linkedin’s audience by posting links to your community’s job listings on Linkedin. This strategy can help drive traffic to your community, engaging your current members and enticing prospects to consider joining your organization to access your private community.

Cross Selling/Virtual Marketing

Let’s say that you have a strong online community that has amassed a great deal of valuable information from your members (case studies, white papers, best practices, etc.). You realize this information may appeal to similar online communities (example: two regional doctors associations specializing in a specific medical practice). Marketing your content to other groups can expand your revenue stream beyond your internal membership. As in the doctor example above, one doctor’s group could sell best practice studies to other doctor groups.

By selling to other online communities, both buyers and sellers benefit from the exchange of monies and knowledge. Further, it can lead to new business relationships between them. As these cross selling relationships develop, online communities can develop marketing networks between additional similar communities that will ensure continued cross selling and virtual marketing opportunities.

Consider that an outside party offers goods and services that would be desirable to your community members. By offering to facilitate the selling and marketing of those goods to your members, you can collect either an upfront fee or a per transaction fee.  A social buyers guide for your industry (something like Yelp for your vertical market) is a niche offering that many buyers and sellers would find attractive.

As your community continues to grow, its online reputation will attract outside merchants who wish to sell their goods to your community.

By following all the previous steps in this article, online communities will uncover tried-and- true ways to maximize the monetary opportunities and create new revenue streams.
