19. Good prospects in Brazil, investors told

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian investors and businessmen should visit Brazil to explore the business opportunities and prospects there.

Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) deputy director (corporate communication unit), strategic planning division, Khairul Annuar Abdul Halim said the Latin American nation offered good business prospects because of its huge domestic market.

“Brazil is one of the few countries in the world which were not affected by the global recession in 2008 and 2009 as its economy is self-sufficient,” he told StarBiz after briefing participants of a seminar on “Exploring business opportunities in Brazil” organised by the Johor Baru Matrade office.

Khairul, formerly the Sao Paulo Matrade trade commissioner, said with a population of 203 million, Brazil was the biggest economy in South America and second in the Americas after the United States.

He said if Malaysian investors or exporters kept on harping on the distance factor for not going to Brazil, they would eventually lose to those from other countries.

“With the advancement in information technology, you (Malaysian investors) can communicate with your Brazilian counterparts via the cyber world,'' he added.

Having said that, Malaysian businessmen still needed to visit Brazil to establish a relationship with a local businessman as he or she would become their local representative, Khairul said, adding that it was important to have a Brazilian as a representative to handle matters pertaining to investment or export.

With his experience at the Matrade office in Sao Paulo from 2007 to 2011, Khairul said the Brazilian way of doing business was a little bit different from other Latin Americans.

“If you are able to penetrate the Brazilian market, it will pave way for you to venture into other countries in Central America.''

Khairul said the sectors in Brazil which investors should look out for included infrastructure, oil and gas, palm oil products, natural rubber products, port improvement, logistics and transportation.

Convert Industry Headaches Into Business Opportunities - Investors Business Daily

Don't run from business headaches. Relieve them. How firms benefit from a make-it-better approach:

• Feel their pain. Entrepreneur and software developer Dan Rodrigues was doing consulting work in the medical field when he waded into the perplexity of the health care reimbursement process. He told IBD, "It really made my head spin." In a good way. "I saw it as a problem-rich environment. I like to solve problems."

• Ease it. Consumers enjoy easy-to-use apps. Businesses — even medical ones — should too. That was Rodrigues' approach with Kareo, the health care billing software firm he founded in 2005.

"At the core of what we do, we help doctors get paid," he said. "We work hard to make it an intuitive solution."

More than 12,000 physicians have adopted the platform.

• Make a healthy pitch. Winning them over is no knee-jerk reaction. A doctor's typical response: Sounds great, but does it work? "It's a noisy product market," Rodrigues said. "It's hard for physicians to cut through all the noise."

After warming them up with demonstration videos, Rodrigues offers a 30-day free trial.

"It's a way for them to ease into the relationship," Rodrigues said.

• Probe deeper. John Davie had zero restaurant experience when he and his father launched Dining Alliance, a food service consultancy. But they'd heard firsthand how smaller restaurateurs struggled to compete with big chains. Why not help the independents band together to get better pricing on everything from ketchup to cola?

To perfect the collective approach, Davie pulled up to the table. "For the first few years, I would just pepper people with questions," he said. "It's kind of amazing what people tell you when you ask direct questions."

• Chip away. Dining Alliance now has more than $1 billion in buying power among thousands of participating eateries.

It didn't start that strong.

"We were going around selling the future," Davie said, trying to get diners and bistros to sign onto an unproven approach.

A few early believers buoyed Davie's spirits. "We had some restaurant owners who were passionate about what we were doing," he said. Initially distracted by pie-in-the-sky possibilities, he achieved growth by concentrating on achieving results for existing clients.

"Things changed when we focused on a relatively small goal," he said.

• Pump them up. PBA Health CEO Nick Smock grew up working in his father's pharmacy, so he understands the pressure of competition that big-name drugstores place on smaller operators.

Najib unveils 42 Innovative Business Opportunities to businessemn, investors

Posted on April 20, 2012, Friday

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday announced 42 Innovative Business Opportunities (IBOs) offered through open tenders to the business fraternity and Malaysian investors.

He said the IBOs, unveiled in tandem with the government’s ambitious plan to empower the innovation industry in the country, have the potential to generate RM1 billion revenue within a certain period.

Advertisements on the IBOs would be placed in all the Malay and English mainstream and vernacular newspapers today, he said.

Information on the IBOs is also available on the Malaysian Innovation Agency’s (AIM) corporate website, he said

“This is the initial stage. After this, the National Intellectual Property Rights Central Depository will further expand these IOBs.

“The depository will eventually become a one-stop centre for companies to seek innovation opportunities.

“Through this way, small and big companies will have a chance to diversify their business and also propel them to be in the forefront than their competitors,” he told a news conferece after chairing AIM’s Fourth Administrative Council meeting here yesterday.

Najib said he hoped company managements would study the 42 IBOs adduced by local universities and research centres, which AIM felt have vast potential to be commercialised, generate revenue and wealth for the people engaged in innovation programmes and to the nation.

To a question on support for companies involved in innovation, the prime minister said the companies would be considered for support to get loans and enjoy certain incentives.

“However, it depends on the merit of each company,” he said.

Najib said interested companies were given a month to make submissions to AIM and the final decision would be made by the agency’s administrative council.

AIM is a statutory body established by Parliament in 2010 to spearhead innovation initiatives and activities in the country while its administrative council is a management body responsible to give advice and guidance to AIM.

Seventeen members of the management body are ministers and captains of industries.

The IBOs range from hand-held bio-sensors that immediately detect specific infections to bio-pesticides that control the spread of mosquitoes and rice cookers that automatically drain starch from rice. — Bernama

S'POREANS INVESTORS ENCOURAGED TO TAP OPPORTUNITIES AS KUWAIT OPENS UP

SINGAPORE, March 14 (Bernama) -- Singaporean businessmen and investors

seeking to expand their business abroad can look towards opportunities in

Kuwait, said Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Teo Ser Luck.

He said opportunities in development projects such as the construction of

public infrastructure are growing, as Kuwait liberalises its market to allow for

more private sector collaboration.

In 2010, the Kuwaiti government unveiled a U$125 billion economic

development plan to liberalise the country''s economy.

The plan included privatising public firms and the construction of

mega-projects through public private partnerships.

"Kuwait is entering an exciting new phase where there will be greater

participation by the private sector.

"Singaporean companies should explore these new, untapped opportunities and

consider moving into the nascent market," he said in a statement released by the

Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

Teo was in Kuwait from March 11-13 to attend the 13th International

Energy Forum (IEF), where he joined energy ministers from around the world to

discuss strategies to strengthen the security of the global energy supply chain.

This is the first time that Singapore had attended the forum.

Kuwait was Singapore’s 4th largest trading partner in the Gulf Cooperation

Council (GCC) in 2011.

Growth in bilateral trade exceeded 20 per cent year-on-year to reach

S$4.7 billion in 2011.

Kuwait had more than US$115 billion worth of projects in the pipeline as of

early 2012, making it one of the most promising project markets in the region.

Kip Piper to Present on Business Opportunities in Dual Eligible Market at Citi Conference for Investors - YAHOO!

Sellers Dorsey Senior Consultant to speak to investors on business opportunities in the dual eligible market for Medicaid and Medicare

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) February 29, 2012

About 25 states are now looking at integrating Medicare and Medicaid health care for the 9.2 million dual eligibles – the high-cost patients enrolled in both programs. “The $350 billion Medicare-Medicaid dual eligible market is an extraordinary new business opportunity for health insurers,” says Kip Piper, senior consultant with Sellers Dorsey.

Mr. Piper will explain the dual eligibles market at the Citi Global Health Care Conference in New York City on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 9:00 am. In the session, moderated by Citigroup’s Carl McDonald, Piper will outline current federal and state activities, the business opportunities for health plans, and answer questions from investment analysts and other attendees.

Mr. Piper, a former state Medicaid director, health insurance executive, and federal health care official, advises health plans, state Medicaid agencies, health systems, and Fortune 500 healthcare businesses on Medicaid, Medicare, and health reform. A frequent speaker at health care conferences, Kip has been quoted in BusinessWeek, USA Today, Modern Healthcare and Investor's Business Daily, and other key media outlets.

Dual Medicare-Medicaid enrollees are low-income frail seniors and persons with severe disabilities. Most have several severe chronic medical conditions. “While they are a small proportion of the 48 million Americans in Medicare and the 68 million in Medicaid, they represent about 25% of federal Medicare spending and about 40% of state Medicaid costs. As a group, they are the nation’s most vulnerable and costliest patients with their health care caught between two complex and publicly financed programs,” said Piper.

State and federal initiatives are now underway to integrate the financing and delivery of health care for dual Medicare-Medicaid enrollees. Federal and state officials seek to improve quality of care and access, while reducing taxpayer costs through care management, coordination, and efficiencies. In most models, dual eligibles will have a choice of health plans to receive all their Medicare and Medicaid benefits. “This represents a genuine win-win opportunity for beneficiaries, taxpayers, and health plans,” said Piper.

To arrange an interview with Mr. Piper, please contact Christopher Labonte at 215.514.4377.
