NBA Finals bring new business opportunities - Miami Herald

Sparky’s Roadside Barbecue, a downtown lunch favorite, is usually slow at the dinner hour. Now that the Miami Heat has advanced to the NBA Finals, though, it’s serving 50 on game nights.

As the team plows through the finals, its success is spilling over to other local businesses, from sports bars to hotels.

Jim Flanigan, owner of Flanigan’s Seafood Bar and Grill and a sports fan haven, said his Miami-Dade County locations have all seen substantial growth — between 5 percent and 10 percent on game days, representing revenues of between $5,000 and $10,000 a week. “I wish it was a best-of-21 series,” Flanigan said.

Sparky’s co-owner Kevin Kehoe said new customers are finding him through online review sites like Trip Advisor and Yelp, which recommended the restaurant based on its location mere blocks from AmericanAirlines Arena and its selection of barbecue. Subsequent word of mouth has brought Sparky’s new clients. “Someone will come in the next day and bring in more of their friends,” Kehoe said. “It’s really great.”

Other downtown restaurants are also enjoying a game-day boost. Located on the Miami River in the Epic Hotel, Zuma is close enough to lure diners but far away from the traffic jams around AmericanAirlines Arena, said Lizzy Maynes, the restaurant’s events and marketing manager. As one of the city’s hottest restaurants, the Japanese eatery is always busy, but during recent games the number of reservations has doubled, Maynes said. Most of the clients pouring in are regulars, but Heat stars — including LeBron James, Dywane Wade and Chris Bosh — frequently drop in post-game.

The Heat’s performance has also helped Best of the Rest Stars raise money for its youth workshops on leadership skills and money management.

This year, proceeds from a new collage by Coconut Grove artist Erika King portraying NBA basketball stars go to the nonprofit. Sixty NBA players have signed the commemorative piece, including James and Wade. The work, titled NBA Legends of Basketball — We Made This Game and valued at $25,000, is on display at City National Bank of Florida’s 1450 Brickell Ave. branch.

Tourism officials are expecting the team’s halo effect to keep filling hotels. The Finals — shown in more than 200 countries and in 47 languages — have racked up 47.4 million viewers in the United States alone, said William Talbert, president and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“I can’t buy three top shows on network television,” Talbert said. “I don’t have enough money for this priceless coverage.”

Correspondent The private sector has been urged to utilise business opportunities inherent in the relocation of the Diamond Trading Company (DTC) from London to Gaborone.


The permanent secretary to the president, Eric Molale told private business owners at the Botswana Confederation of Commerce, Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM) AGM yesterday that government wants to ensure that the relocation of DTC generates business opportunities for Batswana."We want to ensure that the DTC relocation generates business opportunities and attracts unrelated businesses by individuals. We need to move DTC into Botswana not just as a marketing platform for development but also to create economic sustainability," said Molale.

He noted that since 67 percent of the world diamonds come from Botswana, the relocation seeks to ensure that Batswana participate in diamond processing. Molale explained to BOCCIM members that diamond revenues are expected to decline around 2026 as the value of the resource declines at the world richest mine, Jwaneng.He revealed that opportunities exist across sectors such as education, tourism, minerals and many others. The relocation of the DTC will see P45 billion worth of diamond business passing through the local banking system with  60 to 70 international diamond business persons coming to Gaborone at least ten times a year to buy diamonds.  Molale however urged business owners to offer quality services, as most workers who will come here expect such services as quality education.  He advised that the tourism sector also has to prime itself for the visitors."The tourism industry lacks quality and promptness. We need to ensure that our services are of a high quality standard," he noted.

ACA creates opportunities for WellCare - The Business Journal

WellCare (NYSE: WCG), a Tampa company that provides managed care services targeted to government-sponsored health care programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, said it was pleased that the high court preserved states’ option to expand Medicaid coverage. “We welcome the opportunity to serve more members of the low-income and vulnerable populations in the states where we currently operate,” the statement said.


The ACA also calls for establishing health care exchanges, new marketplaces for individuals and small businesses to compare and choose private health plans. WellCare “believes that many of the people who will obtain insurance through the exchanges are likely to have similar health care needs and demographic characteristics to our current members … and [we] would welcome the opportunity to serve them,” the statement said.


Investors, who liked the potential business expansions for WellCare, sent the company’s stock price up nearly 9 percent Thursday, closing at $53.98 a share.


Stock gains were smaller at other commercial health insurers, including UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), the country’s largest insurer and a market leader in the Tampa Bay area. While insurers generally are expected to add millions of new customers because of the individual mandate in the ACA, they also face new requirements on providing coverage and costs. HALAL STANDARD CAN HELP EXPAND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES, SAYS HDC

GEORGE TOWN, June 28 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the MS2400 standard

based on the Halalan-Toyyiban Assurance Pipeline System(HTAPS)is an ideal

approach towards efforts to provide a product that is safe, pure and nutritious,

said Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) Chief Executive Officer, Datuk

Seri Jamil Bidin.

He said implementation of the MS2400 series can also help do away with

concerns of the community over the safety and purity of products during the

process of transport, storage and retail.

"This standard attests to the principle of maintaining halal integrity

throughout the supply chain. It is also aimed at avoiding contamination should a

halal product be stored alongside non-halal products," he added.

He said this in his keynote address at the seminar on "Opportunities in

Halal Logistics and ASEAN Free Trade Alliances (FTAs)" here today.

His speech was read by the HDC Vice-President Dr Malik Musharaf.

The one-day seminar was organised by the Ministry of International Trade and

Industry (MITI) and the HDC with the theme, "Opportunities in Halal Logistics

and ASEAN Free Trade Agreement".

Jamil said a lot of business opportunities could also be created through

the implementation and use of the MS2400 series standard as a means of halal

logistics in the supply chain.

However, he added that there was a need to also develop skilled and

competent workers to fullfil the needs of companies which provide halal

logistics services.

"To realise the business opportunities, there is an urgent need to train the

talent needed for this dynamic sector, he said.

He said Malaysia is committed to becoming a global halal hub, and the first

to be established was the Selangor Halal Park in 2003.

"To date, we have nine accredited halal parks throughout the country and

which have attracted investments worth RM5.8 billion," he added.

On the seminar, Jamil said he hoped the resulting exchange of information

and discussions, would drive the economy through the use of a standard that is

acceptable in the halal supply chain.

"This will enable Malaysian companies to plan strategy and create a

meaningful presence in the halal global market," he added,

HONG KONG: German-born Allan Zeman was drawn to the opportunities that the Far East had to offer back in the 70s, starting off small with a trading company.

Today, the self-made property magnate carries a Chinese passport, and is a local delegate to the National People's Congress of China.

But he is more popularly known as the father of Lan Kwai Fong, the city's best known night spot.

Mr Zeman, now chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Holdings, believes that today's Hong Kong still provides opportunities for those who want to make it big.

"Hong Kong is an international marketplace. People from all over the world come here to do business. And so in my mind, I think that Hong Kong will always be an opportunity for people who are creative, able to think ahead, who can come up with a product that's a little different. If you're one of those categories, there's always opportunity," he said.

In 2004, Mr Zeman was given the opportunity to revamp local attraction Ocean Park, in light of Hong Kong Disneyland's impending opening.

He focused on the educational and conservational aspects of the Ocean Park and, tapping his Lan Kwai Fong experience, gave people new experiences.

Today, Ocean Park is the city's top tourist attraction.

"Hong Kong needs to keep re-inventing itself. There's a lot of competition now for Hong Kong, as you say, Singapore, Macau, Hengshan Island where there's a new aquarium opening up, Shanghai Disney," Mr Zeman said.

"I've always said that competition makes you better. I never worry about competition. As long as you're providing a good experience for your guests, your customers, they'll keep coming back."

Mainland tourists are coming back by the droves.

Hong Kong is now less a gateway to cheap mainland factories and more a playground for wealthy Chinese consumers.

Last year, a record 28 million mainland tourists visited the territory, spending at average of US$1,500 per stay.

The retail boom caused by tourist arrivals in recent years has pushed rents to record levels. In Causeway Bay, the city's busiest shopping district, retail space commands average rents second only to New York's Fifth Avenue.

Douglas Young co-founded of Goods Of Desire (GOD), an emporium of lifestyle products, just a year before the 1997 British handover of Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong has always been a very expensive place to do business," he said. "That part hasn't changed, but I think the situation probably has gotten worst now.

"I probably wouldn't be able to start GOD today because the entry barrier has just been lifted so high. I think the problem with companies like ours, being private and local, without big funding, is that we simply don't have the budget to promote ourselves "

Trained as an architect, Mr Young has helped to put Hong Kong on the design map by taking inspiration from the city's culture, past and present.

With five stores in the city, GOD is expanding into Singapore with plans for more stores on the mainland.

Going bush: A look at rural business opportunities - dynamicbusiness.com.au

Whether you’re thinking about a tree change, sea change or just a get-away-from-the-city change, going rural might just give you the opportunity to get your business started.

Heading to a rural area to start a business may seem like a daunting prospect. Will there be the customers? Will there be the facilities you need? Is there any business support?

These questions are legitimate worries for first time business owners or those who are used to regular foot traffic locations. However, seven leading regional cities have come together as NSW’s Evocities, a campaign to promote their towns and encourage people to move from the capitals to the regions, and bring their businesses along with them.

According to the Evocities campaign, 64 percent of Sydneysiders have considered leaving the city and 38 percent have mentioned that traffic congestion in the city is a serious issue. When 60 percent of SMEs have changed their start and finish times to deal with this issue, according to NRMA research, it’s not surprising that more people are considering moving to the regions and potentially becoming their own bosses.

Getting started

Finding a new place for your favourite coffee might be the only issue you have in relocating to an Evocity and getting your business started, according to Evocities spokesperson James Treloar. “You might have a slight increase in the cost of freight but otherwise I would suggest you’ve got no other areas where you’d be facing increased charges,” the ex-retailer says. “Even phone services, and those sorts of things, they’re pretty much the same no matter where you are. I would say most of your business expenses are no more in a regional centre than the capital.”

Tania Gillanders, owner of the Quinty Bakehouse in Uranquinty and Wagga Wagga, also agrees that in terms of services that a business needs, there’s no reason why you’d have more or less of an advantage working in a regional area than you would in the city.

“It’s definitely cheaper than the city here,” says Gillanders. “We were able to buy our property in Uranquinty and Wagga. In Sydney we would definitely not have been able to afford to buy. There are plumbers and electricians here for all your maintenance needs, or there are people in Orange or Young. We’ve got big business here. I think there’s a lot of money floating around Wagga, you’d be surprised.”

For Jessica Price-Purnell, getting started was the easy part. “I found it really easy. I think I’ve been blessed to be perfectly frank,” the young PR consultant says. Price-Purnell started her company Bubbles Consulting, after first finishing university in Armidale. She decided to stay in the regional city and quickly found out that public relations advice was sorely needed by many businesses in the area. She says that while getting started in the area was easy, she was concerned about maintaining a healthy client base.

“I was absolutely scared stiff in fact. Armidale’s the sort of place that it’s not so much what you know but who you know, and six years after moving here I’m still a blow in, I’m not a local, so that was certainly a bit of a worry. But word of mouth is a wonderful thing and that’s basically how I’ve got the bulk of my clients.”

Bill Parianos of Bill’s Beans in Orange, on the other hand, hasn’t had to worry about maintaining a healthy client base. After moving from Sydney to Orange six years ago, his coffee roasting business has expanded to now include two premises and over 23 staff. “Before we made the move from the city we were probably selling about 100 kilograms a week in central west and about 50 kilograms a week into Sydney. But six years later we’re probably selling about 2 tonnes a week, of which half goes into central west and half goes into the major capital.”

Local assistance

While Parianos says that they established the business on their own without the assistance of any small business services, Price-Purnell says that without the help of the Armidale Chamber of Commerce she wouldn’t know where she was.

“The Chamber of Commerce is fantastic for that sort of thing, we’re quite lucky in Armidale. They run a series of training courses on different things. For example, Armidale is one of the first sites for the NBN so things like how to get connected and how to utilise new speeds. They also run fantastic networking events; there’s a monthly women in business breakfast where they have different speakers talking about how they find their experience as a woman in business. So things like that have been a real learning experience,” she says.

Treloar isn’t surprised that this kind of assistance is becoming available in the Evocities as they continue to grow. “The thing that’s important to understand is that these cities are all growing and growing quite well. When you look at the state average population growth being 1.1 percent last year, Orange, Tamworth and Bathurst had fairly good growth rates above the state average and in most instances above the coastal average.”

Not just business

Not being limited by time, traffic and more costly overheads means that many of these small businesses have the ability to give back to their new communities. Gillander’s bakery runs classes for the kids on Saturday mornings to encourage them to get into the kitchen and learn how to bake. “The local preschool wasn’t doing too well so we donated a percentage of the sales of our hot cross buns at Easter to them. Then later you see them come back to the bakery as a customer.

“We’re a community here in Wagga. It’s a city but it’s a community. A lot of people work for themselves and they have an understanding of that. So we have a lot of friends who, if you’re going through a hard situation you support each other. I know there’s competition but we’re still on good terms with each other,” Gillander explains.

Parianos also tries to give back wherever he can. “We get the staff from regional cafes to work at our retail outlets for a four day induction and barista training, and then they go away with a really good skill set. Most other suppliers can’t offer that. That’s what sets us aside from the rest. We think outside the square, and think differently to the rest.”

Talking to these small business owners, it would seem that they’re all happily ensconced in their Evocities, with no plans of moving to a major capital any time soon. “There’s no way in the world that I would have been able to start up a business of the scale to compete in Sydney,” Price-Purnell says.

Parianos also definitely doesn’t regret the move. “There’s no way that we’d move back to the city. We still have a ten-year plan with the business. We’re looking at a glass ceiling now in terms of volume, and we don’t really want to exceed that. It’s enough to remain boutique and enough to remain as a quality supplier and retain some value with the brand.  You see a lot of brands that move too big too quick and end up on every street corner, and the quality falls away. We’re trying to avoid that at all costs.”

Business opportunities in Africa - DAWN Group

KARACHI, June 26: More than half of Pakistani businesses (55 per cent) believe there are huge opportunities in Africa, with a further 93 per cent of companies expecting the number of opportunities to trade with Africa to increase over the next five years, according to new research from Barclays.

The research carried out on behalf of Barclays by the Lahore University of Management Sciences asked 200 companies across five cities about their views of Africa as a place to do business and as an emerging market for trade.

South Africa, Kenya and Egypt were named as the top destinations for export opportunities, while Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania were named as the top African nations when it comes to Pakistani imports.

Arslan Nayeem, Head of Corporate Banking for Barclays in Pakistan said that while the findings appear broadly positive, the potential for Pakistani exporters in Africa was still being significantly underestimated.

In terms of sectors, more than 70 per cent of respondents said the best exporting prospects were for towel and leather goods.

Afghan women entrepreneurs look to India for opportunities - Washington Post

They run fleets of trucks, supply construction material, design software programs and make furniture. Women entrepreneurs in war-torn Afghanistan have been breaking many cultural ceilings in the past decade.

But now, many of them are anxious to find new clients as they prepare for the 2014 drawdown when they may lose their biggest client – the U.S. military bases. And India’s vast and lucrative market is their next frontier.

“It will be a big challenge once the Americans and the others leave. The local market in Afghanistan has not progressed much,” said Masuma Rezaie, 24-year-old founder of the evocatively named company First Afghan Lady Logistics and Services. “But there is big money in the Indian market.”

To this end, Rezaie and other businesswomen came to New Delhi on Wednesday to seek deals, training and technology from Indian companies. The three-day business-to-business meetings, facilitated by USAID and the Consortium of Women Entrepreneurs of India, comes at a time when the impending withdrawal of the international forces from Afghanistan is also raising concerns about the future of women’s rights to study and work.

Rezaie’s company supplies security equipment, furniture, potable water, generators, construction machinery and laborers to the international military camps and humanitarian groups across Afghanistan.

The war and rebuilding of the nation has birthed many Rosie-the-Riveters in Kabul, who are going beyond handicrafts and textiles. One company is called “Courageous Afghan Women Construction Company & Logistical Services.”

“The Taliban attacked my trucks twice,” Rezaie said. “But not because I am a woman, but because I am doing business with Americans.” She runs an all-women office in Kabul. “We keep the women in the offices to do the brain work, and send the men into the field.”

The organizers hoped business deals will be struck over the next three days.

Another entrepreneur, Malika Qanih, wants to learn the process of manufacturing herbal medicines from Indians.

“Afghanistan is rich in undiscovered, untapped herbs. Big business potential,” said Malika Qanih, 60, chief executive of Sun Pharma. On Friday, she will visit a factory owned by Shahnaz Husain, czarina of Indian herbal cosmetics.

Qanih hopes that Afghan women will not have to go back to the past after 2014. “Many countries have signed strategic partnerships with Afghanistan. I hope they will not forget to protect us even after 2014,” she said.

Kroc started out as a salesman for paper cups and his customers twice brought him to new business opportunities that he acted on. Sometimes this can mean selling a completely different product or service than you were offering before. Look at your current customers - are there hidden business opportunities you can develop with them or improvements to what you currently sell that can bring them more value and put more money in your bank account? If you're always on the lookout for new opportunities to grow your business you will eventually find the one you can hit a home run with.

Action Item #2: You're Only As Good As The People You Hire

As your business grows beyond yourself you'll realize the importance of having a good team. They are the ones representing your company, making decisions every day, and talking to your customers. Having a good staff will make or break your ability to build a successful company beyond yourself.

To make sure he had the best team possible in the early stages of the business, Ray Kroc personally took charge of the entire hiring process. Once he had made the decision to bring someone on board the McDonald's team, Kroc would give each and every one of them a badge with the title of Management Trainee. It didn't matter what their actual job was; Kroc wanted every employee to feel valuable and like an important part of the team. Kroc would then tell his workers to think of a better way to do their job or of any improvements that could be made in customer service, which could then be written down and placed into a Suggestion Box. The Suggestion Box led to countless successes like the Happy Meal, Filet-o-Fish, Big Mac, Hot Apple Pie, and Egg McMuffin.

When you hire a new employee make them feel like they are an important part of your team. Encourage their suggestions on how the business could be run better, create opportunities for them to advance, and let them know that you value their contributions. A loyal and hardworking team will reward you with outstanding business results.

Action Item #3: Be A Part Of Your Community

Ray Kroc launched a number of initiatives to help build the communities around each McDonald's restaurant. First off he insisted that his franchise operators lived in the communities where they worked. He also hired regional advertising agencies so they could work "on the ground" and organize grand openings, birthday parties, and community programs. Finally he believed in community involvement through charities and the company continues to give back to this day as part of its corporate philosophy.

You don't have to run a restaurant to be involved in your community. Just think about the people you sell to and where they hang out. Can you get involved in making their lives easier and better? It's a longer term strategy but an extremely profitable one if you can win the hearts and minds of your customers by giving back.

Kroc started out as a salesman for paper cups and his customers twice brought him to new business opportunities that he acted on. Sometimes this can mean selling a completely different product or service than you were offering before. Look at your current customers - are there hidden business opportunities you can develop with them or improvements to what you currently sell that can bring them more value and put more money in your bank account? If you're always on the lookout for new opportunities to grow your business you will eventually find the one you can hit a home run with.

Action Item #2: You're Only As Good As The People You Hire

As your business grows beyond yourself you'll realize the importance of having a good team. They are the ones representing your company, making decisions every day, and talking to your customers. Having a good staff will make or break your ability to build a successful company beyond yourself.

To make sure he had the best team possible in the early stages of the business, Ray Kroc personally took charge of the entire hiring process. Once he had made the decision to bring someone on board the McDonald's team, Kroc would give each and every one of them a badge with the title of Management Trainee. It didn't matter what their actual job was; Kroc wanted every employee to feel valuable and like an important part of the team. Kroc would then tell his workers to think of a better way to do their job or of any improvements that could be made in customer service, which could then be written down and placed into a Suggestion Box. The Suggestion Box led to countless successes like the Happy Meal, Filet-o-Fish, Big Mac, Hot Apple Pie, and Egg McMuffin.

When you hire a new employee make them feel like they are an important part of your team. Encourage their suggestions on how the business could be run better, create opportunities for them to advance, and let them know that you value their contributions. A loyal and hardworking team will reward you with outstanding business results.

Action Item #3: Be A Part Of Your Community

Ray Kroc launched a number of initiatives to help build the communities around each McDonald's restaurant. First off he insisted that his franchise operators lived in the communities where they worked. He also hired regional advertising agencies so they could work "on the ground" and organize grand openings, birthday parties, and community programs. Finally he believed in community involvement through charities and the company continues to give back to this day as part of its corporate philosophy.

You don't have to run a restaurant to be involved in your community. Just think about the people you sell to and where they hang out. Can you get involved in making their lives easier and better? It's a longer term strategy but an extremely profitable one if you can win the hearts and minds of your customers by giving back.
