People’s interest in online shopping has encouraged drug dealers to use similar methods in selling drugs, the National Narcotic Agency (BNN) says.

“The drug dealers saw online shopping as a business opportunity to sell their products. They want to promote and develop their network to increase their illegal sales,” BNN’s operations chief Brig. Gen. Benny Mamoto said Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

BNN is cooperating with the Communication and Information Ministry, Customs and Excise Directorate General and foreign narcotics agencies such as the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to curb online drug transactions, he said.

“We have also investigated where the drug materials are sourced. We monitor all kinds of business related to drugs,” Benny said.

Benny added that they need an enforcement operation to reduce or eliminate illicit drug supply to dealers and decrease demand from drug abusers by rehabilitating them.

“The role of the family is really important in the latter action. We cannot only rely on [police] officers to settle the drug problem,” he said. (iwa)
