Hume Council takes aim at jobs

HUME Council will focus on skills development, job pathways, a green economy and digital business opportunities to improve the local economy.

Councillors adopted the Hume Economic Development Strategy 2030 and 2012-2013 Action Plan at a council meeting two weeks ago.

The strategies aim to support economic resilience and guide development of industrial activity to provide jobs.

The strategic goals set out in the plan include:

PROMOTING Hume as a place for business prosperity.

SUPPORTING skills development and job pathways.

BUILDING economic sustainability and resilience.

STIMULATING a “green economy” and facilitating low-carbon businesses.

The council has prioritised allowing a quick roll-out of the NBN in Tullamarine from August to provide online business opportunities, creating an Investment Action Framework to promote business in Hume and establishing a Hume jobs and skills taskforce.

Cr Adem Atmaca said the report would strengthen the ability to lead economic development in Hume.

The council also wanted to support existing business in Hume to make it competitive with the whole market.

The plan outlines Hume’s plans to improve freight and transport operations, increase the number of businesses and people taking part in the council’s Business Efficiency Network and increase the number of Hume residents employed locally.

Cr Atmaca said while job losses had hit Hume hard in recent years, the takeover of biscuit maker Unibic by a consortium was a positive sign.
