C4ISR hosts briefing for industry, small business conference - United States Army

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (Dec. 21, 2011) -- Army leaders at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., hosted an advance planning briefing for industry, or ABPI, and small business conference to inform industry and business leaders of new opportunities to demonstrate their technologies for potential military use.

At a panel during the event, Chuck Pizzutelli, assistant Program Executive Officer for Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, known as PEO C3T, discussed specific steps the PEO C3T Technical Industrial Liaison Office is taking to contribute to this effort.

The semi-annual Network Integration Evaluation, NIE, which is part of the agile acquisition process that relies on Soldier feedback to rapidly incorporate new technologies into the Army portfolio, is emerging as one of the most effective processes for introducing new products to PEO C3T, Pizzutelli said.

"[We pay attention] whenever thumbs get raised or when (Soldiers) see a nice toy or capability out there -- that's the way we're looking for new products," Pizzutelli told the audience. "So, if you're looking to market things to us, I urge you to play on that."

Pizzutelli acknowledged the resources required for businesses to try out products in the NIE environment at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., but stressed that the Army will work with businesses of all sizes that demonstrate mature network solutions. Part of the NIE cycle and agile process involves first testing products in the laboratory environment at Aberdeen Proving Ground, known as APG.

This ensures that they are properly integrated into the network before being placed in Soldiers' hands, and that industry receives a thorough report on system performance, he said.

Pizzutelli joined hundreds of Army officials and trade leaders from companies ranging from large defense contractors to small businesses at the ABPI conference held earlier this month.

Kashia Simmons, public affairs officer for the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, or CERDEC, said this event helped explain to industry the mission of each Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, known as C4ISR, organization at APG, and how they work together on different programs and initiatives.

"Our industry partners are key to how well we are able to equip the Soldier," he said. "And if they don't know what we're doing, they can't appropriately help us get these capabilities into the hands of the Soldiers."

Teamwork within the C4ISR community, Simmons said, becomes essential.

"The opportunity to talk about how all those relationships cut across lines is really important," he said. "So, folks who have particular capabilities can see how they fit into our community from the research and development, sustainment and also from the program management perspective."

Direct contact with customers, Simmons said, solidifies CERDEC's ability to serve them.

"What better opportunity to learn what people need and want to know about our organization than to sit and speak to our customers and partners one-on-one and hear their questions," he said.

Business leaders from multiple states crowded into the conference hall to make new contacts and learn better ways to pool their resources with C4ISR organizations. Richard Usmiller, vice president of Human Capital for Savantage Solutions, was one of them.

With offices at Fort Belvoir, Va., Savantage Solutions is a software company that supplies Commercial-Off-The-Shelf, or COTS, products to federal agencies. Usmiller came to the C4ISR conference looking for ways to fuse Savantage's resources with C4ISR's.

The key for most of the attendees, Usmiller said, is the timeline. Receiving thorough and up-to-date information from the Army is essential to being able to compete, he said.

"Especially for small companies who are resource-limited," he said. "The key is anticipating and being able to bid on opportunities down the road."

For PEO C3T, the Technical Industrial Liaison Office is serving as the single point of entry for new vendors interested in partnering with the organization. The office's mission is to maintain a repository of vendor data and to maintain an updated journal of vendor dispositions to prevent redundant proposals.

During the panel, Pizzutelli discussed how PEO C3T is merging competitor outreach with the organization's long-standing goal of developing, fielding and supporting networked mission command solutions to enhance combat effectiveness.

Aside from the NIE, Pizzutelli highlighted several outreach opportunities being spearheaded by the Technical Industrial Liaison Office to support fielding and sustainment efforts on the battlefield. Social media presents business opportunities - Journal Tribune

Published: Thursday, December 22, 2011 12:06 PM ESTThe business world and the political world are being revolutionized by the use of social media, which is changing the way we market and purchase – as well as vote.

Many of us use social media sites, such as Facebook and Myspace, now. The growing use of these connections is changing not only the way we communicate, but also the things we value in our lives, such as the tradeoff between privacy and our ability to reach and share news and information about ourselves with others.

Because members of the “Y” generation – 18 to 28-year-olds – receive most of their news online, hard copy newspaper subscriptions have dropped dramatically. For those of us who still like to hold reading material in our hands, this is a problem, if it reduces our options.

Social media has made substantial inroads into the way we do business, and even the way we spend our leisure time, with blogs and micro-blogs, social networking sites, virtual game worlds, dating sites and mobile commerce.

The Internet Retailer magazine’s December 2011 issue shows how e-retailers of all sizes have grown online sales in the social media field. One of the Top 500 retailers, launched in 2007, already has Web-based sales of $423 million. That is indicative of the growth of Web-based selling. Midsized e-retailers in the second 500 list grow even faster each year. It is interesting to note that some of the e-retailers launched in 2010 had Web-based sales of more than $8 million in their first year. While some e-retailers do little or no business, others can run from $80,000 in the first year, up to over $1 billion in sales a year, for a company that started a little more than 10 years ago.

In this down-turned economy, people who have lost jobs, but have good ideas, can explore how setting up an e-business might work for them. The trick is to find a need not being met, and try to offer it through a social media outlet. Growth potential is excellent for businesses in this field.

We are living through a period of revolution in communications, as we change from a print-based society to a digital one. E-commerce is taking place on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google and LinkedIn, and many other smaller sites. A number of startup e-retailers have grown at no or very low advertising costs, by using Internet sites. Most store or office-based businesses now have websites, too, so potential customers can contact them, see where they are located, or place orders.

Businesses and individuals who want to connect to friends are not the only ones using social media. Politicians have discovered how to reach people, raise money, and influence voting, through the Web. In the political world, President Barack Obama undoubtedly helped his campaign through the effective use of social media in 2008. Obama used YouTube and other websites for free advertising, greatly helping his campaign. U.S. News and World Report, in November 2008, reported that Obama was “the first occupant of the White House to have won a presidential election on the Web.”

This year, the Obama campaign is again heavily committed to its Web-based efforts, coupling these with numerous visits to college campuses, in order to attract younger voters for support in the 2012 election. Other candidates are not shy about e-campaigns, either. And both the national Democratic and Republican committees send almost daily e-mails to voters and donors on their mailing lists.

Another example of how social media has affected political change has been the set of uprisings known as the Arab Spring. Middle East dictator regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya were toppled by their own countries’ citizens. Protesters were able to reach each other by “tweeting” information on where and how to meet. People used cell phones to photograph events, break news and galvanize other citizens to support their cause.

In America, we can use the Web to provide more open data from government, so that the public can easily see what is happening in city and state government – and at a low cost.

I still prefer a newspaper and a book in my hands when I read, but we all need to learn to take advantage of some of the information available to us on the Web.

Further to identifying and developing employable skills, it is also critical to hone such skills on a regular basis. As today’s businesses are supported by technologies that change every now and then, one has to be in tune with such changes even to survive, if not succeed, when it comes to such emerging careers. In this context, any entrepreneur who wants to be successful in this space has to provide services that achieve tangible outcomes for a student.

The outcome itself can be defined as a step or a series of steps that students can climb on the path to achieving their aspirations. The number of graduates we produce as a nation speaks for itself. Vancouver to host international sustainable business summit - The Vancouver Sun

Vancouver will host an international “Cities Summit” in February aimed at creating sustainable business opportunities to take advantage of the growing urbanization of the world.

The conference, which Mayor Gregor Robertson promised in his inaugural speech Monday, will bring together international entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, major corporations and “forward-thinking mayors” who want to create businesses and jobs around the green economy, according to the Vancouver Economic Commission, which is organizing the summit.

The event, scheduled for Feb. 1-2, is being organized around the second anniversary of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and is a plank in Robertson’s efforts to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020.

“Every city in the world is looking at capturing opportunities in the green economy and applying innovation to building and rebuilding themselves,” he said. “Vancouver needs to be a player and capitalize on our Olympic exposure and premium brand to be relevant in attracting investment and jobs.”

Meanwhile, the Campus City Collaborative, or C-3, a collaboration of the city and six post-secondary institutions, is organizing two other springtime conferences.

Those events — a “green workforce education conference” held by the B.C. Institute of Technology and a research collaboration symposium organized by Simon Fraser University — are designed to bridge gaps between the knowledge universities have and the city’s need for sustainable solutions and information.

“There is a huge need to build bridges between governments, academia, business, the social benefit sector. Government is desperate for evidence-based policy,” said Moura Quayle, who with former premier Mike Harcourt co-chairs the C-3 initiative.

“One of the things we in institutions can bring is some new thinking strategies, how we think our way through some of these challenges.”

Together with C-3, the summit is the newest part of an agenda Robertson began in 2008 with a group of supporters to try to shift Vancouver’s traditional carbon-based economy toward a more sustainable one.

He’s also in a race with other mayors around the world to try to raise their cities’ profile on the international stage as places where sustainable solutions for growing cities can be developed. Robertson has in the past tried to lure venture capitalists and their money to Vancouver to take advantage of a small but growing green innovation sector.

During the Olympics, the city and other municipalities created the Metro Vancouver Commerce Business Program, which the Vancouver Economic Commission said generated $300 million in investment and created 2,500 jobs.

The Cities Summit is the next attempt to bring more investment into the region, Robertson said.

“The emerging theme of city-building is a huge opportunity for Vancouver to capitalize on the expertise we have in green building and clean technology that cities around the world are hungry for,” he said. “There is a transformation of infrastructure afoot to reduce carbon and waste and more efficiently use resources that Vancouver can be at the centre of.”

At the event, delegates from the cities of London, Copenhagen and Kansas City will outline their efforts to marry venture capital with innovative green projects.

The two-day event’s estimated cost of $300,000 will be recovered from attendance fees and sponsors. Robertson said taxpayers won’t be underwriting it although the city hopes to find technologies and business solutions there that can help the city directly.

However, Vancouver is paying two-thirds of the annual $160,000 cost of the C-3 program, with the six post-secondary institutions covering the rest. As part of the project, the city loaned the institutions a building underneath Cambie Bridge for the home of CityStudio, a program that connects students, faculty and city staff together on “real world” projects.

Those projects can be as simple as identifying gaps in city services or in the needs of citizens, according to Duane Elverum, a professor with the Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

Elverum and Janet Moore, an assistant professor at Simon Fraser University's Centre for Dialogue co-founded CityStudio. Elverum said that in one project, students mapped all of the places a person could buy a fresh apple in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. That apple also signified where people could get fresh food. When plotted, the information showed "huge gaps" in where food supplies are located.

That information will be invaluable to the city in its effort to meet its pledge to increase food security by 50 per cent by 2020, he said.

“No one has ever been on the ground and asked ‘where can we buy fresh produce in the city.’ Where are the specific locations? We don’t know this. It may seem minor, but they have major repercussions.”

Quayle, a former deputy minister of advanced education in Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government, said it is these kinds of information projects that will help cities move away from a carbon-based economy.

“I basically thought as I was coming out of government, ‘Who are the people who are really going to be able to make change in a post-carbon context?’” she said. “It is going to be these young entrepreneurs, these young business students, who are going to get out there and turn business models on their heads.”

Quayle said with that in mind, architects, engineers, technology companies and cities all need to learn how to retool to reflect a new post-carbon reality.

The C-3 project will marry those needs between institutions and government. “For me it comes down to showing taxpayers we can collaborate in their best interest and we can bridge those gaps between our institutions and the city.”

Saudi women make best use of Atlanta Forum

(MENAFN - Arab News) The participation by highly competent and professional Saudi women certainly contributed to the success of the "US Saudi Business Opportunities Forum" held in Atlanta from Dec. 5 to 7, 2011. The forum was organized by the Saudi Committee for International Trade (CIT), US-Saudi Arabian Business Council and Saudi-US Trade Group in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Commerce and Industry and US Commercial Service.

Not many people outside our borders are aware of the existence of exceptional women in Saudi Arabia so the presence of such qualified women was a great surprise to a lot of attendees at the forum.

The keynote speech was delivered by Lubna Al-Olayan with great eloquence. In her opening remarks, she brilliantly summarized the geopolitical challenges that the US and Saudi Arabia face today and gave an optimistic view of the future cooperation between the two countries. Lubna Olayan is a highly experienced financial leader and globally known. She is the CEO of Olayan Company, a private multinational enterprise. She was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and sits on many boards and councils because of her extensive experience and expertise in corporate finance, international banking, distribution and manufacturing.

Her sister Hutham Olayan moderated the session on opportunities for finance and investment with equal professionalism. Hutham leads the Olayan Group's activities in the Americas and has been elected to the board of directors of Morgan Stanley. She leads an organization that manages a diversified portfolio of US public and private equities and real estate based in New York. She is a founding member of the Arab Bankers Association of North America, a trustee of the conference board and a board member of the Institute for International Economics.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, executive director for infection control at the National Guard Hospital moderated the panel of health and medical services. She represented the Saudi doctors well known in the field of medical research and health care.

Dr. Salwa Alhazaa, professor of ophthalmology at Alfaisal University, and head and consultant of ophthalmology, senior clinical scientist and consultant in genetics at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, gave an informative presentation in the panel discussing," building the health care sector through innovation and technology." Her logic and research findings impressed the audience.

Dr. Alhazaa also participated in the outreach program to foster better relations with the American women in business. The participants included outstanding Saudi women in the field of architecture, finance and accounting, information and technology, and entrepreneurship. Samra Alkuwaiz, a financial expert and lecturer at King Saud University is a board member and partner of Osool Capital in Riyadh. She has often been named among the most influential women in the region's financial industry. Alkuwaiz has encouraged many Saudi women to participate in finance, play the stock market and build portfolios.

Nadya Bakhurji founded her own architectural consultancy company, Riwaq. This was the first company to be owned by a woman. It is registered under the Saudi Council of Engineers. She is also the first Saudi woman to become a board member of the Saudi Council of Engineers and has campaigned for the recognition of Saudi female architects and engineers in Saudi Arabia.

Nouf Alrakan is CEO of Alimtiaz Alamthal trading company specializing in IT solutions, clothing and food products. She has also established a new company representing the oil and gas industry in the Kingdom and embarked on setting up a manufacturing facility. Khadija Koshak leads a successful business in fashion design. She joined the program with her aspiring daughter currently studying communication in the US. Together they presented a bright picture of two generations of educated and well-accomplished Saudi women.

The outreach initiative was one of the highlights of the Atlanta Forum where some of the most dynamic American female executives and entrepreneurs met with the delegation of professional Saudi women in a round table discussion aimed at promoting women in global business. In an open and frank dialogue, the Saudi women discussed issues concerning their negative image in the international community and projected an accurate picture of Saudi women. Saudi women, they said, have their own hopes and aspire to contribute to the progress and development of their society.

The forum concluded with a commitment to recognize the great potential of Saudi career women and to explore new business opportunities between the two countries.

At the end of the session, the hosts offered the Saudi delegation membership in the International Women's Forum, (IWF), a global organization where leading women of the world are united in a network to promote better world leadership with new ideas and perspectives to make our world a better place. With great enthusiasm the Saudi women welcomed the opportunity to gain experience from the IWF to better serve their governments, corporations and academic institutions.

The Saudi women felt it is time they came out of their isolation and became global partners contributing to intercultural understanding, peace and global prosperity. It is hoped that this dialogue would be the beginning of a long-term relationship between the American and Saudi women business community.

The CIT should be commended for their brave initiative to include a delegation of accomplished Saudi women in "the US- Saudi Business Opportunities Forum." No doubt, the presence of highly qualified women had a strong impact and contributed to the success of the forum.

We too should sponsor more of these events to erase the Western misconceptions of Saudi women and encourage our capable women to excel and participate in global events to showcase their capabilities and willingness to contribute and develop the planet around them.

Business school tributes student lost in accident - Surrey Leader

On December 16, Kwantlen’s School of Business hosted a holiday reception to close the semester as well as pay tribute to a special young man, Dylan Reichelt.

Dylan, a Kwantlen business student, was tragically lost in a car accident last month. Bill Reichelt, Head Trainer for the BC Lions and Dylan’s father, along with the School of Business, and the Kwantlen Foundation, have set up the Dylan Reichelt Memorial Award. The event provided a unique opportunity to grow the fund while attendees had their picture taken with the Grey Cup.

BC Lions head coach Mike Benevides introduced the Grey Cup to attendees and defensive backs coach, Mark Washington commented “The Grey Cup really belongs to everyone. It’s great when people have a chance to see it and touch it. You can really see how they light up.”

Both Lions mingled with and chatted with the attendees and they were both very gracious in posing for numerous photographs.

“We were delighted to welcome faculty and staff from across the University. What made it even more special was the presence of the Grey Cup and the opportunity to honor a student’s memory,” commented Arthur Coren, Dean of the School of Business. “The folks that attended had a great time and they really showed their support.”

Overall the event raised more than $7000 for the Dylan Reichelt Memorial Award. Early in 2012, Kwantlen will meet with the Reichelt family to discuss the criteria for selecting award winners.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has been serving the Metro Vancouver region for more than 30 years, and has opened doors to success for more than 250,000 people. Four campuses—Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley—offer a comprehensive range of sought-after programs, including business, liberal arts and science, design, health, trades and technology, apprenticeships, horticulture, and academic and career advancement. Over 17,500 students annually have a choice from over 200 programs, including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations.
