Jets business advisor Higgins steps down - YAHOO!

Matt Higgins has taken on challenges as diverse as running in two New York City marathons and raising money for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign along with the causes of autism and cancer research.

Higgins also served as the Jets' executive vice president of business operations and advisor to owner Woody Johnson until Tuesday, when the organization announced he is leaving the post to pursue other business opportunities.

Higgins, the lead man for the Jets' social media enterprises, helped the team record over 1.1 million likes on Facebook and expand its presence on twitter by interacting with fans.

Higgins, 37, said he was pleased with his work for the franchise.

"I believe too often in sports that when someone says something that creates a controversy, the blame often falls on transparency, which to me is a copout," Higgins told the team's official website. "At the end of the day, we've made sure everyone in the organization is ready to deal with the media. I'm really proud how we've taken transparency to a whole other level, and thanks to Woody, that will endure a long time. That manifests itself in our passionate following in social media, on our Website, and the way our fans touch the team."

Johnson said the team has advanced in its fan outreach thanks in large part to Higgins' effort.

"It is with mixed emotions that I share with all of you that Matt Higgins will be leaving us to pursue new entrepreneurial opportunities that have piqued his interest," Johnson wrote in an organizational e=mail. "Matt told me late last year that this would be his final season with the team and we have been working closely together to plan his transition since that time. The business side has made tremendous strides under Matt's leadership, helping the team earn a reputation as one of the most innovative in all of professional sports…"

Senior vice president of programming and media production Bob Parente will take over Higgins' role on an interim basis, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
