SBA contracting process provides opportunities (McMahan) - Everything Alabama Blog

The U.S. Small Business Administration serves as the federal government's gate-keeper for small business access to federal contracts. Small business owners who want sell to Uncle Sam must ask three questions: Are they small? What is the size standard for their type business? And, does your business fall under a certain certification? After answering these questions, the business owner must follow eight steps.

Remember: Any business can sell to the federal government. Alabama firms received over $1.23 billion in federal contracts in the 2011 fiscal year. But Congress gives special categories of small or disadvantaged businesses certain preferences in federal contracts for goods and services, including even what are called "set-asides" These are percentage goals for qualified disadvantaged small business types.

First, identify and obtain a DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) number. Second, identify Employer Identification Number (or EIN) - see www.irs.gov. Third, owners must identify their NAICS (North American Industry Classification System).

Fourth, each small business owner must register with the US Government's Central Contractor Registration (CCR) database. Creating a profile and keeping it current gives access to federal contracting opportunities. ¶

Fifth, small business owners must use the federal ORCA (Online Representations and Certifications Application), an online resource for completing paperwork. ¶

Sixth, small businesses should register with the US General Services Administration's (GSA) schedule, also known as the federal supply schedule. Be sure your business has the resources, financial and otherwise, to meet the contract's provisions. ¶

Seventh, search the federal website for contracting opportunities - federal business opportunities or "FedBizOpps" for short. Here the federal agencies post product and service needs they want filled. ¶

Lastly, (eighth) market your business. Get to know the federal agencies that want what you make or provide. Know the agencies' procedures and focus on your niche. Use other resources via SBA and the GSA for help. The SBA district office in Alabama can be reached at 205-290-7101. Good luck! ¶

RNC provides Tampa Bay business recruiters with marketing opportunity - St. Petersburg Times

TAMPA — The thinking is, the Tampa Bay area will never get a better chance to sell itself than during the Republican National Convention.

So business groups and convention organizers have plans in the works or under discussion to make the most of that last week in August:

• An A-list event is expected to feature Gov. Rick Scott and show off the University of South Florida's new $38 million Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in downtown Tampa.

• The nonprofit Tampa Bay Partnership has launched a $600,000 privately funded project to tout the region's business strengths before, during and after the convention. This will include four days of live-streamed video to highlight local industries and the "Florida experience."

• The Tampa Bay Host Committee will host a "Why Florida, Why Now" summit for CEOs in industries that could help diversify Florida's economy.

• The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce plans to send up to 100 detailed white papers about local issues, institutions, people and trends to visiting journalists a month in advance of the convention.

Putting your message in the right hands is vital, chamber president Bob Rohrlack Jr. said.

A few months ago, after meeting with visiting foreign correspondents from Germany, France, Italy, Turkey and Japan, chamber officials saw that even though the journalists had done some homework, they didn't know much about the Tampa Bay area or what the convention would mean to it.

"We realized that we've got a chance to define who we are," he said.

What's more, a few people remember what it's like to see Tampa presented in a less than flattering light. There was the time in 1994, for instance, when Tom Brokaw broadcast the NBC Nightly News from Tampa.

"Everybody was excited because he was doing the news live from here," Rohrlack recalled.

At the time, drugs were a big issue, so Brokaw did a national story on drugs, then segued to a story about how Tampa was tearing down crack houses.

"They made it sound like there were just giant neighborhoods of crack houses," Rohrlack said. "It was like, 'No! What are you doing?' "

In August, he said, business leaders want to make sure that if someone decides to do a story on local schools, they see Bill and Melinda Gates' quotes about what they have described as the pioneering work they've seen in Hillsborough County's schools, especially when it comes to teacher feedback.

This doesn't mean wallpapering over problems, he said, but instead providing background and context about what the community is doing to address challenges like transportation and traffic.

The chamber is not alone in this outreach.

In an effort to raise $55 million for the convention, the Tampa Bay Host Committee's members have met with 250 CEOs, and Florida's business climate is a central part of the pitch.

Typically, these executives know about traditional reasons to support a convention, like promoting a brand or getting the chance to mingle with policy makers. But not everyone wants just to come and talk politics, and some are open to hearing about below-the-radar business opportunities.

So host committee president Ken Jones pitches things like CAMLS, the surgical training center built to draw doctors from all over the world.

"If you're in the health care field, you ought to be tripping over yourself to come down here and see this new building," he says. "It's that cutting-edge."

That's why economic development leaders want to showcase CAMLS to Tampa Bay's visitors. The facility, less than two blocks north of the convention complex, is one of the venues where groups can book convention-related events, though details of the event with Scott are scarce.

Similarly, the time and place of the host committee's CEO summit hasn't been set.

The Tampa Bay Partnership is calling its initiative Front Row Tampa Bay. From space it has booked at the Stageworks Theatre in the Channel District, it plans to broadcast four hours of live online video a day during the four days of the convention.

The 9 a.m.-to-1 p.m. programming will spotlight four parts of the region's economy: health care; technology and innovation; business, financial and data services; and marine and environmental activities. Employers in those areas account for about 360,000 jobs, or 24 percent of the workforce, in the eight counties covered by the Tampa Bay Partnership. They pay 20 percent above the average wage and are expected to grow to 500,000 jobs by the end of the decade.

What the partnership is thinking of is something with a live audience, sort of like MSNBC's Morning Joe. Some of the on-camera guests will be in the theater. Others will join in from around Florida and beyond via Skype or remote feeds.

The webcast programming also will look at how Tampa Bay's economy connects with broader trends. For example, someone from the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute could talk about Moffitt's work in personalized medicine. Organizers also are talking to the natural gas and electric industry representatives about doing a segment on energy conservation, and electric and natural gas vehicles.

"It will be a mix of local businesses telling their story and national leaders coming in and helping us to understand how we can grow these industries," partnership president Stuart Rogel said.

To create the live stream broadcasts, the partnership will bring in former WTVT-Ch. 13 news veterans Frank Robertson and Kathy Fountain and has teamed up with political strategist Adam Goodman's Victory Group. Florida Trend, whose parent company also owns the Tampa Bay Times, is a media sponsor.

The partnership is looking for sponsors to underwrite the cost of the project as well as contribute programming. So far, it's about a quarter of the way toward its $600,000 goal.

"As we build this," Rogel said, "we will have a targeted audience, hopefully, of tens of thousands of people who have been exposed to the story, like the story, want to learn more, want to stay connected with us and want to keep that communication going long after the RNC has ended."

Newport Digital Technologies Provides Update to Shareholders

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Newport Digital Technologies, Inc. (OTC: NPDTE.PK - News) announced today that they have formally discontinued efforts to compete in the wireless, interactive digital signage solutions business but will continue with its previously announced corporate restructuring.  The Company plans to complete its restructuring and explores several business opportunities.  To preserve cash, the Company has elected to become a non-reporting but will trade under the symbol NPDTE and then will revert to and trade under the symbol NPDT.

The Company attempted to enter the highly competitive wireless, interactive digital signage marketplace under a partnership with Convergent Holdings, but was unable to attract the capital necessary to compete with much larger, better funded competitors in this space.  It became clear to management and to the NPDT board that the Company could not profitably execute and that to continue to spend time in a market that is growing more competitive and dominated by major players would not be in the best interests of the company and its shareholders.

To that end, the Company will move forward to complete a reverse split of its common stock, eliminate all debt from the balance sheet and continue to explore an array of business opportunities that could create value for the stockholders.  The company has nominal fixed operating expenses and will save tens of thousands of dollars in expenses by becoming non-reporting until it has defined its business model.

"We have worked very hard over the past few years, with limited resources and attempted to exploit potential niche markets in the digital signage space," said NPDT CEO Donald Danks.  "The reality of competing against existing, established competition, a nominal balance sheet and limited human resources dictated that we make the moves that we are announcing today.  We are actively exploring a number of business opportunities that we feel can add value given the current market conditions.  We will keep shareholders apprised as we explore these options."

VIASPACE Provides Giant King(TM) Grass Business Update: Part Two--Asia - Marketwatch

IRVINE, Calif., March 14, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- VIASPACE Inc. /quotes/zigman/382884 VSPC -1.23% , and its subsidiary VIASPACE Green Energy Inc. /quotes/zigman/583847 VGREF 0.00% today provided a business update on recent bioenergy and pellet activities and opportunities in Asia for its proprietary dedicated energy crop Giant King(TM) Grass. On March 7, 2012, the company issued a similar update on Europe and the Americas.

CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen reports "Asia represents a large potential market for Giant King Grass based bioenergy projects. On the pellet side --China has restricted the use of coal in small boilers and this has led to a new Chinese domestic demand for pellets. Additionally, a new law in Korea requires the use of biomass for electricity generation and this is leading to a market for pellets. Korean utilities and fuel traders are actively seeking sources of biomass pellets, and are co-investing in pellet projects. Southern China and Southeast Asia have ideal climates to grow Giant King Grass, and the transportation distances to customers in Asia are much shorter than distances to customers in Europe. This leads to very favorable economics for pellet projects. European pellet buyers are also active in soliciting pellet supply from Southeast Asia. VIASPACE is pursuing several pellet opportunities in Asia."

Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines are actively promoting biomass power plants for electricity generation through government initiatives and feed in tariffs. A feed in tariff is a commitment from the government electrical grid to purchase biomass electricity at a specific price for a specified period of time. A feed in tariff is essentially a government guarantee to buy the electricity and this guarantee can be used to obtain equity and debt financing for the project.

Kukkonen traveled to Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar in February where he met with current and potential partners for biomass electric power plants in these countries. Representatives from the Philippines and Malaysia flew to California in December to meet with us. In February, Kukkonen also met with representatives of Seema Energy who are developing a 90 MW biomass power plant in Thailand to be fueled by Giant King Grass. Kukkonen also met with Owl Energy, the power consulting company that conducted the feasibility study and developed the Request for Proposals for Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) for the Seema Energy project in Thailand. Kukkonen met with one of the EPC firms to brief them on Giant King Grass as a dedicated energy crop.

Kukkonen continued, "In Bangkok, I met with our power plant partner DP CleanTech to discuss the range of potential projects around the world utilizing their exclusive boiler technology with Giant King Grass. DP CleanTech has built 27 biomass power plants over the last six years. Their expertise is in high-temperature high-pressure power plants using straws such as Giant King Grass as fuel."

"I also went to Myanmar (also known as Burma) to explore future business opportunities. The US currently has sanctions against Myanmar, but things are changing quickly. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Myanmar in December and Senators John McCain and Mitch McConnell have recently traveled to Myanmar. Pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is running for Parliament in the April 1 elections. The US has restored diplomatic relations with Myanmar and President Obama spoke well of Burma in his State of the Union address. If things continue to go forward, the sanctions will likely be removed and Myanmar will represent a significant business opportunity. After being closed for 50 years, Myanmar is anticipating very rapid development and electricity is an important part of their plan."

Finally, Kukkonen was invited to make a presentation at the 2nd Biomass & Pellets Update Asia Conference held in Bangkok on February 17, 2012. Other speakers were from Poyry Management Consulting of Finland and Singapore, Vyncke Energietechniek of Belgium, and pellet equipment manufacturers--Kahl from Germany, CPM from the US, Prodesa from Spain, and Muyang from China. Dr. Kukkonen's presentation "Giant King Grass for Bioenergy and Pellets" is available on the VIASPACE website at www.VIASPACE.com .

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 06, 2012

1st Global, a leading growth consultant for select CPA firms, now offers interactive, in-depth wealth management and business-building opportunities on its new website. With many CPA firms experiencing flat or little growth over the last five years, this information as well as exchange of ideas on the site will be very beneficial for CPA firm partners seeking sustainable profits.

According to 1st Global’s marketing executive, that’s one of the reasons why the company launched it. “We launched 1stGlobal.com for two reasons: to better illustrate our core mission of increasing overall CPA firm growth through unique and dynamic consulting engagements. And, to express our thought leadership and encourage conversation on this important topic,” said 1st Global Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Brian M. Finnigan.

“What’s exciting is 1stGlobal.com offers the ability for CPA firm partners and wealth managers to ‘weigh in’ in real time on these ideas and facts of growth consulting using the DISQUS comments platform that many online publications and blogs use. It will enhance the interaction we have with those in our industry,” he added.

Many of 1st Global’s thought leadership articles and whitepapers have been published on AccountingWEB but without this social media feature. In addition, 1stGlobal.com offers engaging testimonials from CPA firm partners about their experience with 1st Global’s consulting heritage and educational programs, an integrated social media button with LinkedIn and a careers page highlighting the multitude of career opportunities currently available as 1st Global continues to grow.

What’s more, the company plans to provide prospective firm partners an invitation to 1st Global’s Wealth Management Feasibility Analysis and Consultation™ on its website. This consulting engagement is designed to help firms of distinction discover the emotional and financial value of offering wealth management, in addition to their traditional accounting services.

“For more than 20 years, 1st Global has been a leading growth consultant for market-dominating CPA firms striving to be pre-eminent providers of high benefit services to their most valued clients,” said 1st Global CEO Tony Batman. “1stGlobal.com will be an additional resource of value for top-performing firms.”

Regional Center provides Small business & Retail opportunities

SOMERVILLE—The Somerset County Regional Center Partnership will hold a public workshop, “Investment Somerset – A Business Driven Economic Agenda,” on Wednesday, March 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. The public workshop will be held in the 1st floor conference room at 27 Warren Street in Somerville (across from the Historic Court House). There is no charge for participation.

“Investment Somerset,” an initiative of the Somerset County Freeholders and the Somerset County Business Partnership, will help define the county’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) that will guide job creation and private sector economic investment priorities in the future. This business outreach session is part of an effort to align local business priorities with regional, state, and federal economic development efforts.

Though centered on the Regional Center communities of Bridgewater, Raritan, and Somerville, the session is open to representatives from across Somerset County and will focus in the needs of the small business and retail communities. Discussion will center on the economic strengths and weaknesses in the Regional Center, the internal and external influences on the economic situation, and listing of priorities for the future.

The workshop will attempt to isolate projects of regional significance that will form the basis for priority actions having the highest likelihood of creating jobs, expanding the tax base, and creating efficiencies that will lead to economic investment. The session will allow the small business and retail sectors to discuss needed efficiencies in the delivery of services and resources in Somerset County. The advice, guidance, and suggestions will help to define and prioritize actions that will lead to the completed CEDS and implementation of a business-driven agenda for Somerset County.

“The Regional Center is in a unique position to help drive the economic agenda for the county,” commented Rose Evans, Chair of the Regional Center Partnership. “The State Plan specifically says that among the goals is to focus policies and investments on regions that support regional planning. That’s us and this is our opportunity to take advantage of their generosity.”

27 Warren Street is located between East Main Street and Veterans Memorial Drive in downtown Somerville; free parking is available in the Bernie Field parking garage off East High Street.

For more information, log onto www.scbp.org/economic-development/ceds. To register for the March 14 event call 908-231-7021 or email PlanningBd@co.somerset.nj.us.

Calendar highlight: Expo provides face-to-face opportunities - Richmond Times-Dispatch

By: Times-Dispatch Staff | Richmond Times Dispatch
Published: January 23, 2012 Updated: January 23, 2012 - 12:00 AM »  Comments | Post a Comment

Small-business owners can find it difficult to get in front of the people making business purchasing decisions in major corporations and governments, says Oliver R. Singleton, president of the Metropolitan Business League.

But Friday, the league's Greater Richmond Small Business Expo and Matchmaker Event will bring hundreds of local small businesses together with corporate decision-makers and government procurement officers.

"This is an opportunity to get in front of both," Singleton said. "The decision-makers and the procurement officers will be at tables all around the room. It's a fantastic opportunity."

Large users of goods and services, whose purchasing decisions can profoundly affect the local economy, will be attending so they can diversify their supply chain, he said, noting that "small providers are often much more nimble than large ones."

Singleton also pointed out another benefit of the regional event: Small businesses' largest customers are one another, and the expo will allow them to meet face to face.

The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Arthur Ashe Center, 3001 N. Boulevard.

Admission is $50 per person and exhibition cost is $500 per table. To register, go to www.thembl.org or call (804) 649-7473.
