India is a profitable business opportunity, PM tells South Korean CEOs - Economic Times
Investment from South Korea is a "priority" for India, visiting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday, adding that the government was taking "proactive" steps to improve the business climate and move forward with the Posco mega steel plant project in Orissa that has been plagued by farmer protests.
"Investment from Korea is a priority for India. We will take pro-active steps to address investor grievances and improve the business climate in the country. Many states of our Union have been actively encouraging foreign investment and we will support these efforts. I urge Korean industry to have faith in India," Manmohan Singh said in his address to South Korean CEOs during his two-day official visit to this country.
"I recognize that sometimes our processes can be slow but there are effective mechanisms for resolution of problems and differences and a strong rule of law. The government is keen to move forward with the Posco project and there is some progress in this regard. I believe that India is a stable and profitable long-term investment opportunity," he told the 20 CEOs, including those of Hyundai and Samsung, who attended the meeting.
The Posco steel project, India's largest foreign investment project estimated at $12 billion, has been hobbled for years by local protests against land acquisition of over 4,000 acres in Paradip in the eastern coastal state.
The POSCO issue had figured in the joint statement issued after the Summit talks Sunday between Manmohan Singh and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak, which noted that there had been progress forward on issues like land acquisition.
This is the third time in two days that Manmohan Singh has spoken of how much India values South Korean investments.
Noting that many South Korean companies have become a household name in India, Manmohan Singh said Sunday he hoped to see many more, particularly from the medium and small sectors, setting up shop there.
"I invited Korean firms to invest in India in a big way. Companies such as LG, Hyundai and Samsung are already household names in India. We would like to see small and medium sized Korean companies also making India a base for their manufacturing," the prime minister said at a joint media interaction with President Lee after their Summit.
"I informed President Lee that India is making a huge effort in upgrading our physical infrastructure. We want Korean companies to help us realize this objective and benefit from the opportunities provided by this," Manmohan Singh added.
He again referred to the Korean companies during his speech at a lunch hosted by President Lee.
At the CEO's meeting, to illustrate why India was such an attractive investment destination, Manmohan Singh noted that the country had managed to maintain a 7 percent growth rate in the last few years and listed six fundamentals that would enable it to return to 8-10 percent growth in the coming years:
* A domestic savings rate of 33-35 percent of GDP and growing,
* A very young population, with half of the working population in its twenties,
* Heavy investments in education, health and agriculture to give a new deal to rural India. Rural markets are booming and the middle class is growing rapidly.
* Huge expansion in higher education and skills and development of ports, airports, railways, energy and roads. India is poised to continue to be a frontline player in the global knowledge economy.
* Ambitious plans for the development of physical infrastructure. Planning to secure investment of almost $1 trillion in the next five years in new projects in highways, power plants, mass transport systems, ports and airports. This will be achieved through both public and private investment and Public-Private Partnerships.
* Determined to pursue a strategy of green growth. Committed to increasing energy efficiency and the share of renewables, including solar and nuclear power, in the energy mix. There will be large business opportunities and I am aware of Korean capabilities in environmentally friendly technologies.
"Korean companies have always recognized these strengths and competitive advantages of the Indian economy. They were among the early investors to look at India as a strategic investment destination," Manmohan Singh said, adding that Hyundai has a 25 percent market share in India's domestic passenger car industry.
Noting that after the implementation of Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on January 1, 2010, bilateral trade has surged by roughly 65 percent in two years and reached $20.6 billion in 2011, the prime minister said: "However, it is still below its huge untapped potential."
"Therefore, President Lee and I decided yesterday to revise the bilateral trade target to $40 billion by 2015. This is a challenge as well as an opportunity that we must both seize together," Manmohan Singh added.

The Future of Franchise Business Opportunities Examined at Franchise Expo South on Miami Beach
Members of the International Franchise Association welcomed thousands of attendees to the Miami Beach Convention Center for Franchise Expo South. In 2011, gourmet burgers, cupcakes and frozen yogurt topped the list of popular franchise trends. To start the New Year, The Sixth Annual Franchise Expo South returned to South Florida on January 20-22, 2012 where visitors were offered a unique opportunity to see what the future of franchising holds. From the basics of buying a franchise to launching a brand internationally, the show addressed today’s hot topics and brought in thousands of entrepreneurs, current franchise owners, and veterans interested in owning their own franchise business. Sponsored by the International Franchise Association, the Expo was held at the Miami Beach Convention Center and featured educational seminars and conferences, several of which had been approved for Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) accreditation, in addition to the franchisor exhibits on the tradeshow floor.
“Franchising is very important to South Florida’s economy, as it creates business opportunities for entrepreneurs and more local jobs, especially for the thousands of American troops who will be re-entering the workforce next year,” said Tom Portesy, president of MFV Expositions, producers of Franchise Expo South. “In fact, more than 825,000 franchises support 18 million U.S. jobs and contribute $2.1 trillion to our nation’s economy, proving that franchising has a significant impact.”
After three years of restrained growth, due to the recession and its lingering effects, franchise businesses show signs of recovery in 2012, with establishment growth forecast at 1.9 percent, according to a new report by IHS Global Insight for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation. The Franchise Business Economic Outlook: 2012 forecasted modest growth in the number of establishments in each of the 10 business lines in the report, including automotive, business services, commercial & residential services, lodging, personal services, quick service restaurants, real estate, retail food, retail products & services and table/full service restaurants.
Franchise Expo South was an opportunity for prospective franchisees to discover which types of businesses matched their needs. The tradeshow allowed potential candidates to do their research in person with franchisors to ensure their potential investment was an ideal match. The expo floor featured hundreds of exhibitors from food to professional service franchises including Hardee’s, The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., Baskin-Robbins, EmbroidMe, Lucille Roberts, Red Mango, Sign-a-Rama, and Wireless Zone, along with thousands of attendees.
“Franchise Expo South offered the chance for franchise businesses to differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition as they connected with potential new small business owners across South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Portesy. “We welcomed members of the community to explore the many different franchise opportunities available to them so that they could learn about the benefits of owning a franchise business at the Franchise Expo South.”

Canada: A good business neighbor - South Bend Tribune
On Monday our community had the opportunity to host Roy Norton, the consul general of Canada. Norton kicked off his Indiana tour by meeting in South Bend with local business and community leaders about why Canada is important to Indiana and St. Joseph County. While here, Norton also met with a Canadian company considering a South Bend location.
Several months ago we hosted a similar gathering with the Consulate General of Israel and have been working on similar partnership opportunities with local companies interested in doing business in other parts of the world.
Canadian consulates general are similar to Canadian embassies but are located in major cities, not capital cities, of foreign countries. Canadian consulates general offer a full range of diplomatic and consular services. The senior officer at a Canadian Consulate General is the consul general.
Norton is based in Detroit and represents Canada in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. The Canadian Consulate General, which he heads, promotes Canadian interests -- trade, investment, the environment, culture and academic relations being among the principal ones. The office also provides consular, passport, visa and immigration services.
We often forget about the important relationship that exists between the U.S. and Canada. Canada has been an important friend, ally and customer of the U.S. for some time. Canada has a stable economy, solid financial ratings, a history of budget surpluses, and some of the lowest payroll and corporate taxes of all of the G7 nations. (France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada). It recently was ranked as the best G7 country to do business with.
Canada is the top trading partner for the United States, with imports and exports totaling close to $600 billion in 2011. China, Mexico, Japan and Germany round out the top five, with Canada some $90 billion more than second place China. Almost $1.6 billion in merchandise trade crosses the Canada-U.S. border every day. Our country does 10 times as much business with Canada as it does with China.
Canada is the largest foreign market for U.S. goods and services. Millions of U.S. jobs depend on Canadian imports from the U.S. In Indiana, 160,000 jobs are dependent on trade with Canada, and in the 2nd Congressional District, 22,000 jobs. Canadian companies also employ 12,000 people in Indiana and 1,300 in the 2nd District. Automobiles and auto parts make up the largest sector of traded products.
Canada is by a wide margin the No. 1 supplier of imported energy to the United States -- meaning energy in all forms including oil, petroleum products, natural gas, electricity and uranium. Canada is the single largest source of oil imports to the United States, a bigger source than Saudi Arabia. In 2011, the U.S. imported an average 2.1 million barrels per day from Canada, and about 1.1 million per day from Saudi Arabia.
Canada expects to see $160 billion in private sector investment in energy in the coming years, which could support as many as 340,000 jobs in the U.S. and 7,600 in Indiana. In addition, the Keystone pipeline could lead to an additional 20,000 jobs in the U.S. The capacity exists for energy independence in North America.
As we seek business opportunities for our region and state, our friends to the north in Canada present some exciting opportunities.

Rawlings: South Dallas is a business opportunity - The Business Journal
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says he wants to identify South Dallas business opportunities to bring in $8.5 billion in tax revenue over the next two decades.
“South Dallas is not a charity case; It’s a business opportunity,” Rawlings told a crowd of more than 200 people Monday afternoon, as he detailed his Grow Dallas plan.
With South Dallas comprising 45 percent of the city's population, while contributing to 15 percent of the city’s tax burden, there’s an opportunity to grow South Dallas’ tax base, Rawlings said.
“We want to improve the quality of life and attract new business to this community,” he said, adding that Dallas can’t afford to think in silos anymore.
South Dallas is a solid enterprise for private investors that should compete with North Dallas for new growth, he said.
Private investment and city dollars come into play with a project like this, which could cost roughly $1 billion over the next 10 to 15 years, he said.
Those dollars identified to fund the numerous community and development projects include:
· $700 million in TIF funds
· A projected $500 million in 2012 bonds
· $25 million from federal government community development block grant funds
· An unknown number of continuing transportation grants
· $8 million earmarked for private-public partnerships
Rawlings, who says he’s the city’s top salesperson, says this plan will change the trajectory of the city and lead to new opportunities down the road.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. , Jan. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2011, gourmet burgers, cupcakes and frozen yogurt topped the list of popular franchise trends. To start the New Year, The Sixth Annual Franchise Expo South returns to South Florida on January 20-22, 2012 affording visitors a unique opportunity to see what the future of franchising holds. From the basics of buying a franchise to launching a brand internationally, the show will address today's hot topics, as well as attract thousands of entrepreneurs, current franchise owners, and returning veterans interested in owning their own franchise business. "Franchising is very important to South Florida 's economy, as it creates business opportunities for entrepreneurs and more local jobs, especially for the thousands of American troops who will be re-entering the workforce next year," said Tom Portesy , president of MFV Expositions, producers of Franchise Expo South. "In fact, more than 825,000 franchises support 18 million U.S. jobs and contribute $2.1 trillion to our nation's economy, proving that franchising has a significant impact."
After three years of restrained growth, due to the recession and its lingering effects, franchise businesses show signs of recovery in 2012, with establishment growth forecast at 1.9 percent, according to a new report by IHS Global Insight for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation. The Franchise Business Economic Outlook: 2012 forecasts modest growth in the number of establishments in each of the 10 business lines in the report, including automotive, business services, commercial & residential services, lodging, personal services, quick service restaurants, real estate, retail food, retail products & services and table/full service restaurants.
Franchise Expo South is designed specifically to allow prospective franchisees to discover which types of businesses match their needs. The tradeshow is a forum for potential candidates to do their research in person and meet with franchisors to ensure their potential investment is an ideal match. The expo floor will feature hundreds of exhibitors from food to professional service franchises including Hardee 's, The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., Baskin-Robbins, EmbroidMe, Lucille Roberts , Red Mango , Sign-a-Rama, and Wireless Zone, along with thousands of attendees.
