The agri opportunity - Business and Leadership

Ireland has a strong reputation for quality food produce, which is something the economy is currently capitalising on, according to Michael Lauhoff, head of small business and agriculture, Business Banking at Bank of Ireland.

“There is a major opportunity for the Irish food and drink sector because of changing diets worldwide involving a shift towards more dairy and protein products,” he says.

“Under the Government’s Food Harvest 2020 programme, there will be a significant increase in output from Irish farms, making agri-business a key sector for both the bank and the wider economy.”

With this in mind, Bank of Ireland introduced a €200m Agri Farm Investment fund in July 2011, dedicated to supporting the financial needs of the agricultural sector.

“The fund is almost fully committed, and is currently going through the draw down stage for various projects. We expect to increase this fund shortly. We have had a lot of requests for upgrading of milking parlours and there have been quite a few land deals covered under the fund – we have provided funding for 12,000 acres in 2011,” says Lauhoff.

“Agri-business has always been a crucially important sector for the bank and the wider economy and with the growth in output projected for the sector Bank of Ireland is continuously building up its own expertise in this area.

“Bank of Ireland has 50,000 agri customers and is committed to providing them with the support they need to grow their farms.”

The agri-business fund is open to new and existing customers and is available to those who are involved in agri-related SME businesses, ranging from farmers to food-related businesses.

The fund is available for investment in a wide variety of purposes including the purchase of machinery and land, upgrading housing and other facilities, the construction of farming buildings and for purchasing stock.

Focusing on credit, Lauhoff says Bank of Ireland has recorded an increase in demand from the agri-business sector, in contrast to the overall demand for credit among businesses, which has been quite muted.

“This is because the sector is performing well and in the majority of cases credit applications are getting through. Efficiency of production is going to be more important going forward, and farmers are taking the opportunity now to invest in their farms to increase output and efficiency so that they will be well prepared to deal with future price volatility.

“Bank of Ireland has no restraints in lending into the agri sector. We are committed to ensuring that the appropriate funding is in place to support all viable farming enterprises so they can participate and avail of growth opportunities.”

An example of this is Bank of Ireland’s co-operation agreement with farm equipment supplier John Deere, which it entered into last August.

Administered by Bank of Ireland Finance, the agreement enables John Deere dealers to offer customers a full range of flexible machinery financing options.

Tim Cook’s Leadership Opportunity: Painting the Apple Green - Wired News

Apple CEO Tim Cook may never be able to compete with the myth of Steve Jobs, but he now has a golden opportunity to fix two things Apple’s brilliant and mercurial founder got wrong: workers’ rights in China and outsourcing. Should he do it, he’ll place his own indelible mark on the brand, while also serving shareholders and consumers.

Because of its success Apple has become a lightning rod for concern about health risks, a rash of suicides and workers’ rights violations in the Chinese plants of major supplier Foxconn, and it has also become caught up in a heated domestic debate about outsourcing high-technology manufacturing.

The focus has intensified in recent weeks, and it is brought to the forefront as Apple unveils the third iteration of the iPad.

The challenge is significant. But because business has never been better for Apple the timing is especially opportune to address the company’s most visible blemishes by allowing it to answer its critics from a position of strength. These negatives provide Cook an opportunity, very early on in his tenure as CEO, to steer Apple in a direction that would cleanse the brand, invigorate the Apple community and begin to create a legacy of his own, out of the shadow of Jobs.

A substantial threat to Apple’s brand may seem remote over citizenship issues. The company also benefits from the fact that many of its principal competitors — such as Amazon – don’t seem to be doing much better improving the working conditions in their supply chains.

All of the Apple’s customers willingly pay a premium for Apple products, while only some consumers (so far) say they expect companies to uphold environmental and human rights standards. But Apple is vulnerable because its prowess relies heavily on its brand. This brand is valued at two times the Brand Strength of what is typically found among consumer electronics brands and 4.5 times the overall brand equity, according to the BrandAsset scores calculated by BAV Consulting, a Young & Rubicam company).

Tim Cook has begun to seize the leadership opportunity to paint the Apple green through a few important steps, such as the creation of standards and supply accounts that are subject to third-party review. Cook’s decision to engage the Fair Labor Association (FLA) to audit labor practices at the Chinese assembly plants that manufacture Apple products in a short amount of time has also practical benefits.

As the first electronics company to partner with FLA, Apple has the opportunity to reshape the standards regarding working conditions. Tighter monitoring and auditing of plants will raise costs for Apple, but competitors, who will be pressured also to adhere to third-party audits, have less leeway to tolerate cost increases. After all, in the upscale markets toward which Apple drives competition, they are already struggling to match the cost advantages that come from Apple’s large scale and scope — and Apple’s customers are already used to paying a premium.

Publishing its supply chain policies and audit practices is a good step, but falls short in demonstrating that Apple is willing to sacrifice a penny saved for a principled commitment. The next step is to move proactively to demonstrate by action that it will cancel big contracts for these principles. If these audits mean anything, they must result in costly actions that demonstrate this commitment.

Parenthetically, Foxconn has only gotten part of the message. In response to visits by the FLA and bad press, Foxconn has announced base salary increases of 16 percent to 25 percent for workers in the inspected plants and to limit the work week to 60 hours a week. But this announcement, however welcomed, lends credence to the original criticisms of its harsh employee treatment.

The bigger leadership question for Tim Cook is whether he should address the U.S. domestic debate over technology, jobs, and outsourcing.

For a company whose growth depends upon overseas market expansion, conceding too much to the American political debate may end up satisfying no one. But here Apple has an admirable legacy upon which it can build: It can work with schools to improve technical training and expand intern and employment opportunities.

Cook can also learn from the missteps of other firms, like Nike and Wal-Mart, which got caught in similar controversies.

Over a decade ago Nike’s founder, Phil Knight, was the bane of human rights activists for failing to curb the well-documented abuses of workers in the plants of their contractors. Though slow to react, Knight succeeded in turning the story to his advantage when he set a new industry precedent for Nike by addressing these abuses through a series of highly publicized measures.

More recently, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott implemented late in his tenure a similar transition, leading a consortium of suppliers, communities, and customers in “Global Innovation Projects” to remove non-renewable energy from the products the company sells.

Though slow learners in this regard, both Knight and Scott used these legal and ethical threats to their brands to renew the strategic vision of their enterprises.

By painting the Apple green while the company is enjoying historical benchmarks in stock price, market capitalization and consumer acceptance a proactive Tim Cook could turn negatives into positives. He could reinforce Apple’s association with elegant solutions. And he could quickly burnish a successful transition to new and distinctive leadership.

For Cook, this is not be self-aggrandizing ego; it is what he will have to do to liberate Apple from the legacy of a remarkable founder.

With some risk, but the prospect of great reward, Tim Cook can polish Apple as a company willing to change while emphasizing its greatest asset: the love of a design aesthetic that also meets the moral and lifestyle expectations of its customers, its fans — and even its critics.

Why Some See Business Opportunities with New Leadership in North Korea - World

The son of the late North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il was given a promotion on Monday.

Kim Jong Un now heads the ruling Worker’s Party’s central committee, a post that helps clear the way for him to take over following his father’s death from an apparent heart attack earlier this month.

But little is known about the young Kim, who’s believed to be in his late 20s. Uncertainty in the North often translates to uncertainty in South Korea’s economy.

For instance, back in 1994, after North Korea’s founding ruler Kim Il Sung passed away, consumers in the South hoarded staples, fearing an outbreak of war.

But that doesn’t appear to be happening this time around. At the Well Being neighborhood market in Seoul, a clerk said nothing changed after news of the death of Kim Jong Il. Prices are the same and there’s no shortage of goods.

Whenever bad news comes out of North Korea, like when it tested a nuclear device in 2006, or when it attacked a South Korean island last year, the stock market in the South reacts. Lim Soo-ho, an analyst at the Samsung Economic Research Institute in Seoul, said South Korea’s KOSPI did drop a few points after the announcement of Kim’s death, but bounced back two days later.

According to Lim, South Korea’s economy has remained virtually unaffected because investors and consumers don’t see North Korea’s transition as a problem.

He added that people here have experienced these types of situations before, like in 1994. They’ve learned from them; any bad situation has always gone back to normal.

Lim said it also helps that the South Korean government isn’t provoking North Korea, like it did with a military build up in 1994.

Seoul’s expat business community didn’t flinch either, according to Tom Coyner, president of Soft Landing Consulting. He said the shock could have been greater if investors hadn’t seen this one coming.

“Korea seems to be a country that operates on a crisis du jour basis, so we have Kim Jong Il dying, but that’s not a big unexpected event. We knew he was in poor health and the business environment is taking it in stride,” Coyner said.

But Coyner said that given that we still don’t know a lot about the son, Kim Jong Un, investors and other business leaders will have to wait and see how things play out once he officially takes over.

Still, some observers see opportunity in Kim Jong Un’s rise to power.

Hank Ahn, a commissioner at KOTRA, a trade and investments agency, said the younger Kim’s exposure to the West during his school years in Switzerland could mean he’s open to doing business with the outside world — and that’s something South Korea could cash in on.

“It’s quite natural we can assume that North Korea will eventually open up its economy to the outside world,” Ahn said. “So it’s better for us, we can reduce our unification costs when the two countries are reunified, even if we don’t know when. And besides, we can export our products to North Korea as well.”

But Kim Jong Un might have more immediate concerns on his mind.

He’s preparing for his father’s funeral on Wednesday. So improving North Korea’s economy may have to wait.

Rwanda: Sustainability - Moving From Compliance to Leadership - AllAfrica.com

The New Times (Kigali)

opinion

You can think of sustainability as a feelood issue that you can support when it's convenient to do so.

Or you can think of it as the emerging context in which businesses must operate.

Sustainability, as a management concept, has different meanings to different people. From a business perspective, sustainability may generally be defined as the processes by which enterprises manage their economic, environmental, and social obligations and the opportunities to create long term competitive advantage and growth. These are also often referred to as people, planet, and profit in popular media.

As a business manager, one can think of sustainability as a feel-good issue to be supported when it's convenient to do so. Alternatively, one can think of it as the emerging context in which businesses must operate. Evidence from leading companies shows that sustainability can reward both the top line and the bottom line when it is embedded into day to day business management and operational execution.

In PwC's 2011 Annual Global CEO Survey that included business leaders here in Rwanda, CEOs indicated that they saw big opportunities in making their enterprises responsive to social expectations. Whether they primarily sell to businesses, government or consumers, most of the CEOs interviewed by PwC anticipated changes to their business strategies because customers are factoring environmental and social responsibility practices into purchasing decisions. Here in Rwanda, our business are interacting more and more with the outside world, either through seeking to attract strategic international investors, seeking overseas sources of finance or exports. Sustainability, as a management concept, is therefore very relevant to us.

How then do businesses make sustainability part and parcel of how they operate? Few people would argue against protecting the environment or responsible citizenship. But few businesses make decisions with environmental and social impact as a routine concern. To achieve an operations orientation, companies will move through a sustainability maturity path along a continuum from compliance to obligation to efficiency and finally to leadership. In the process, they will embed sustainability in operations. We will look at the first two stages in this article.

The first stage in the maturity path is compliance with regulations. Enterprises at this stage are concerned with embedding compliance mechanisms in their processes because they must do it. Compliance with government regulations is a key external driver and the legally required must-do task. Regulations, whether large and small or direct and indirect will constrain decisions and options. It can be difficult to assess the direct value for complying with regulations beyond avoiding civil penalties. But the economic and other impacts used to justify the regulations can be helpful in setting a common valuation for various sustainability activities, which then can create direct enterprise value. While compliance alone has been an adequate corporate response in the past, social attitudes toward sustainable practices will have more impact in the future. Just being compliant will not be enough, because regulations will be slow to catch up to market expectations and competitive reality.

Dealing with stakeholders' perceptions of corporate obligation to act is the second stage of maturity. It is typically associated with the large-scale impacts of industry and what to do about them. Larger enterprises attract the highest expectations, or obligations, to act. Even if their practices are not much different from others or not under their direct control, industry leaders are expected to "do the right thing" or risk reputational damage and lost business if they don't. Enterprises that have taken appropriate actions have benefited from bolstering their reputations. Meeting the obligation by promoting sustainable methods becomes a source of differentiation from competitors.

In meeting the obligations, companies can turn environmental and social challenges into new business opportunities. By seizing these opportunities, they shape the world and advance toward leadership.
