Shopping tour begins in Akron
Fourteen locally owned shops and restaurants along Market Street and nearby Akron streets are teaming up to bring attention to their businesses — and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
The event — called Tour Around Town Akron 2012, Shop n Dine, Give and Win — begins today and runs through Saturday, March 24.
Each of the businesses will have a box where visitors can donate canned goods (no glass) for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
Those who visit four of the 14 businesses are eligible to enter a drawing to win gift certificates, one provided by each of the participants. Each business will stamp a special Tour Around Town card. Some might offer discounts during the week.
One of the organizers, Eileen Moats, president of Stagecoach Antiques at 449 W. Market St., said the group includes longtime shops — Stagecoach has been open for 69 years — and one that opened earlier this year, Next clothing store, at 837 W. Market St., which specializes in hard-to-find brands and locally produced gear.

Market St.; Akron Family Restaurant, 250 W. Market St.; The Bookseller Inc., 39 Westgate Circle; Every Blooming Thing Florist, 1079 E. Exchange St.; Angel Falls Coffee, 742 W. Market St.; Good Life Tattoos, 752 W. Market St.; Urban Eats, 51 E. Market St.; The Market Path, 833 W. Market St.; and Nervous Dog Coffee Bar, 1530 W. Market St.
Business incubators join forces
TECHudson, a relatively new private, but city-supported business incubator in Hudson, has agreed to become an affiliate of the Youngstown Business Incubator.
Michael DeAloia, fundraising development director for TECHudson, said the agreement means startups working with the company will participate in an established Youngstown Business Incubator program for entrepreneurs, as well as work with staff from the Youngtown incubator.
For example, he said startups will get help with market analysis and learn about possible sources of funding, such as venture capital firms.
James D. Phipps, executive director of TECHudson, said TECHudson’s campus will provide a “satellite location for local businesses looking to grow with assistance from YBI.”
The agreement will be signed by both groups Monday in Youngstown.
TECHudson, which opened in July 2011 in the Omni office building in Hudson, is home to four startups. They are: SGM Games, a developer of games that are played using mobile devices; G & G Games, a developer of an iPhone game called UnWord, which has attracted 10,000 downloads this year; Region XI Enterprise, which creates software used by security contractors; and a business, called the Workforce Planning 90 Day Action Plan, that provides human-resources help to other companies.

Job fair at Stark County library
The Stark County District Library will host its seventh Opportunities Job Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the district’s main library, 715 Market Ave. N., Canton.
A total of 32 employers are scheduled to take resumes and discuss employment opportunities. They are in the following categories: communications, health care, gas and oil production, construction, food, manufacturing, public service, transportation, retail, mechanics, city and county government, hospitality, finances, call centers, military and staffing agencies.
From 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, the library will offer Opportunities Job Workshops that will cover topics such as searching for jobs using the Internet, as well as tips concerning job applications, interviewing and resumes, and “dressing for success.”
Events are co-sponsored by Ohio Job and Family Services, Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority, Senior Employment Center, Stark County Community Action Agency and Turnaround Community Outreach.

Two workshops in Hudson
The Hudson Library & Historical Society will offer two workshops for job seekers this coming week.
Susan Edwards, senior career consultant at Cuyahoga Community College, will talk about ways to improve interviewing skills, behavior-based questions, as well as common mistakes.
On Monday, job interview skills will be the focus of a presentation titled Ace That Interview set for 2 to 4 p.m. On Tuesday, counselors from the offices of Summit County’s employment center on Tallmadge Avenue will discuss services and tools available to job seekers. The library is at 96 Library St. in the First & Main complex.
