Catchafire matches talented volunteers with opportunities to serve

Tom D’Eri needed some help. In September of last year, he co-founded a small social enterprise that helps people with autism find employment. He quickly realized that he needed some outside assistance with things like branding and website development, topics that he didn’t have much experience with himself.

Mr. D’Eri could have hired some expensive consultants to do the work for him, but he was eager to find a better value for his money. So he tried something new: He got in touch with the folks at Catchafire.

Founded in 2009, Catchafire is a “social mission business” that aims to connect skilled professionals with meaningful volunteer projects. To date, the organization, which is based in New York, has built up a database of about 10,000 volunteer professionals and 2,500 organizations that are looking for pro bono services.

And the Catchafire team says that it's just getting started; 10 years from now, Catchafire wants to be a household name.

“Our vision is a more effective and efficient social good sector, and – on the other side – a world where it’s commonplace to serve for the greater good,” says Rachael Chong, Catchafire’s CEO and founder.

Too many pro bono projects leave volunteers feeling disillusioned, Ms. Chong says, and too many nonprofits are struggling with some fairly straightforward technical tasks. Catchafire offers a solution to both of those problems by matching skilled professionals with specific, time-limited projects.

Here’s how it works: Accountants, photographers, lawyers, PR gurus, marketing strategists, and the like log onto the Catchafire website, upload their resumes, and fill out an application. That information is crunched by an algorithm, which figures out which projects in the database will be a good fit for each potential volunteer.

“We’ve created this technology platform that works essentially like an eHarmony or a Match.com, meaning that we’re able to tailor the match to the individual,” Chong says.

The process has worked beautifully for D’Eri’s organization, which is called CanDo Business Ventures and which has its main office in New York. Their first volunteer, who advised the organization on brand messaging, was “fantastic,” D’Eri says. “He really took the time to understand what our business was, and then how to communicate that really succinctly…. Now, he’s actually one of our advisers, so we’ve continued a relationship.”

CanDo Business Ventures is now working with a second Catchafire volunteer, who’s doing web development, and D’Eri has put in a request for a third.

Working with Catchafire is ideal for organizations that are short-staffed, says D’Eri, whose own enterprise has just one long-term employee other than himself. Taking on the volunteers has allowed him to focus on what he does best, instead of getting bogged down in technical subjects that he doesn’t have much experience with.

Catchafire volunteers aren’t paid for their work, but that doesn’t mean that D’Eri gets to enjoy their services for free. Like the other organizations that list pro bono projects in the Catchafire database, CanDo Business Ventures pays Catchafire a membership fee, set on a sliding scale. That’s a critical part of the Catchafire model, Chong says: “We need to make sure that both parties are serious before they engage.”

If both the volunteer and the nonprofit are committed to the process – and in most cases, Chong says, that’s been the case – then both sides will come out happy at the end of the project.

It’s all part of Catchafire’s goal to create a more “meaningful, impactful, and delightful volunteer experience,” Chong says. “We know that if somebody has a great experience, they will very likely give again.”

Africa, Continent Of Opportunities Says UBA Chief On Africa Day - AllAfrica.com

The wide range of opportunities which abound on the African continent was again brought to the fore on Friday in Lagos as the Deputy Managing Director, Ag. of the United Bank for Africa Plc, Mr Kennedy Uzoka stated that the future belongs to Africans, considering the business opportunities that thrive in the continent.

Mr. Uzoka said this in Lagos at a ceremony in which for the third year in a row, the pan African banking group, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc joined the rest of the world to commemorate Africa Day - a day set aside to celebrate African diversity and success as well as highlight the cultural and economic potential that exists in the African continent.  On the bedrock of the experience garnered by UBA plc, one of the largest financial services providers on the continent, Uzoka noted that Africa remains the only continent that would guarantee above average returns on investments, coupled with availability of rare minerals and human resources. He said that UBA in the last two years had deemed it appropriate to observe Africa Day and was committed to making May 25 every year an annual celebration. He noted that the day was a celebration of the pride in 'who we are' as Africans, and enjoined staff to continue to push for excellence as a leading institution.

"The continent has huge growth potentials as business opportunities abound for us to harness by effectively leveraging our Pan-African network in areas of service excellence, product innovation and operational efficiencies. This year's theme for the celebration is 'We are Africa'; validating our positioning and spread across the continent as one of the largest financial services providers," he said.

Highlights of the day include breaking of Kola Nut, a cultural display troupe performance from various African cultural settings amongst other things.

Africa Day, held on the 25th of May every year, is the annual commemoration of the 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), presently recognized as the Africa Union (AU). The objective of this celebration is to celebrate the achievements of African people and businesses that have brought pride to the continent, globally and inspire Africans globally to strive daily for distinction through ethics and diligence.

In line with its vision to become a leading financial institution in Africa, UBA have expanded its reach into 19 African countries, namely Nigeria, Ghana, Cote D'Ivore and Sierra Leone. The rest are Uganda, Liberia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Benin, Senegal, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Mozambique, Congo DRC and Congo Brazzaville. The list keeps growing as we aspire to become the dominant Pan-African financial service institution, the bank stressed.

Recently, during the Annual General Meeting of the Bank held in Lagos,  the Group Managing Director, UBA Plc, Mr. Phillips Oduoza informed the shareholders that the Bank's operations on the continent has contributed to the Bank's impressive Q1 results, contributing over 20 percent to the Group's bottom line. He further promised that as its African operations is consolidated, their contributions to the Group's profit will equal to its Nigerian operations by 2015.

Research reveals that the public is increasingly using Twitter to find professional services.

In just two years, Twitter has seen a 663% growth in people using Twitter to ask for business recommendations, according to Orange Business research.

Small businesses can particularly benefit from the increase by having a strong Twitter presence. SMB's could be missing out on many potential customers by not engaging on Twitter.

"Today, Twitter represents a compelling word of mouth engine that can deliver significant business opportunities to small businesses across a wide variety of sectors," says Mike Tomlinson, small business marketing director at Orange Business.

Orange Business research revealed that the most popular searches for professional services were web designers, solicitors, accountants, architects and copywriters.

"The current economic conditions being what they are, it is critical for small businesses to utilise whatever technology they can to win new business," says Tomlinson. "With 10 million people in the UK on Twitter, what business can afford to ignore that many potential customers? By accessing Twitter whenever and wherever they can professionals can keep a closer eye on any requests for services and respond before the competition does, keeping them an important step ahead in rough economic times."

Orange Business advises SMB's to do the 5 following tips to make your presence stand out on Twitter.

1. Mobilise your Twitter account: Being able to access Twitter wherever you are makes it easier to respond to work requests in a timely manner and allows you to make the most of any 'dead time' to see if people are shopping for your services.

2. Be prepared to offer advice: Professionals need to showcase their expertise and accessibility over Twitter. It's not about giving away free counsel but showing you know what you're talking about and sharing information which might spread far and wide. Your words of wisdom will reach far more potential customers than your silence.

3. Be quick: Twitter is all about the now. If you don't offer your services to somebody looking, your competitors will.

4. Reach out to communities of tweeters: The more networks you are engaged in and the more people you follow and engage with, the fewer degrees of separation there will be between you and potential business leads.

5. Demonstrate 'real-world' credentials - Make sure you can easily link from your Twitter profile to a website that showcases your location, qualifications and credentials. Show what you can on your profile.
