Seize opportunities under Malaysia-Chile FTA
Malaysian entrepreneurs have been asked to seize the business opportunities under the Malaysia-Chile Free Trade Agreement, which comes into force on Saturday.
The tariff elimination will take effect on Jan 1 every year until 2016.
The International Trade and Industry Ministry said the agreement, signed on Nov 13, 2010, would progressively reduce or abolish tariffs on the agreed list of industrial and agricultural products.
"The FTA will benefit Malaysian exporters as Chile will waive import duties on 6,960 tariff lines (90.2 per cent total tariff lines) from Saturday," the ministry said in a statement today.
It said products of export interest offered to Malaysia include electrical and electronic products, vulcanised rubber thread and cord, surgical gloves, vegetable fats, cocoa butter, fats and oil, furniture and aircraft parts.
"The FTA creates an attractive operating environment for entrepreneurs of both countries to strengthen their bilateral trade and economic linkages on a long-term basis," it said.
Last year, bilateral trade between Malaysia and Chile grew by 16.8 per cent to RM1.177 billion from RM1.008 billion in 2010, with exports to Chile totalling RM377.48 million and imports amounted to RM800.35 million. -- BERNAMA

Take advantage of opportunities under ETP, says Chin
NEW TEAM: Chin (second left), flanked by (from left) Lee Kim Shin, Sim Hock Guan and Lawrence Lai, witness the swearing in of the new MCCCI office bearers.MIRI: The Chinese business community should grab all opportunities available in the government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
In making the call, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin said by so doing they would also be helping to propel the nation forward at a faster rate.
“The ETP was formulated by the government due to the unstable global economy. Its aims include maintaining business competitiveness, woo foreign investments and
create more business opportunities.
“These are all important for the country to become a high income nation by 2020,” he said at the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI)’s annual general meeting (AGM) here yesterday.
Chin told those present that development programmes initiated by the government did not come without a reason.
“Such programmes are implemented to adapt to prevailing circumstances and also meant for the benefit of the people.”
On the MCCCI, he noted that the Chamber had done its bit for the development of the city in recent years.
This include helping to set up Curtin Sarawak, publication of Miri Shopping Guideline Book, donating financially to Chinese schools, and being involved in shophouse facelift projects here.
He urged MCCCI to continue their good work in order to help take Miri to greater heights of development.
Among those present at the gathering were Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Miri mayor Lawrence Lai.
Meanwhile, Pemanca Lee Sie Tong was elected as the new chairman of MCCCI for the year term 2012 to 2014.
