Boomer Venture Summit Spotlights Business Opportunities in the Aging Population - TMCnet

TMCNet: Boomer Venture Summit Spotlights Business Opportunities in the Aging Population

SANTA CLARA, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

The aging population is more than a looming drain on the U.S. economy; it's also a booming opportunity for entrepreneurs who can seize on trends like the demand for quality caregiving; affordable disease-management tools; and less-clunky medical aids.

Entrepreneurs and experts on this exploding boomer marketplace and the "longevity economy" will convene June 20 at Santa Clara University for the ninth annual Silicon Valley Boomer Venture Summit, presented by Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business and Mary Furlong & Associates. The event takes place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the University's Recital Hall building, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, Calif.

The Summit event, which also features two competitions for boomer-focused businesses, is a venue for entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to share informationabout serving or investing in companies catering to consumers age 50 and older. Investors will discuss why and where they are putting investment dollars; company executives will discuss their business plans; and analysts will explain how they segment the market and evaluate business opportunities.

Among the trends and entrepreneurial opportunities that are expected to be discussed are:

* The increased need for caregiving for aging boomers and senior care as one of the top job-growth opportunities for the coming years.

* The need for improved, better-designed equipment for aging bodies.

* Baby boomers as entrepreneurs: the "encore career" phenomenon and how many such older entrepreneurs are starting businesses to serve other boomers.

* The trend toward "incubators" and venture capital in the boomer marketplace.

* The impact of declining state and federal dollars for senior care in the U.S.

* Hot segments for investors in the boomer marketplace.

* Consumer and online protections for aging boomers.

* The increase in corporate investment in the boomer and longevity marketplace.

Speakers on these topics will include Mark Yi, managing director of Intel (News - Alert) Capital; Jody Holtzman and Jeff Makowka, executives in "thought leadership" at AARP; and Laurie Orlov, founder of Aging in Place Technology Watch, a boomer and senior market research firm.

Boeing spotlights Malaysia business

ST. LOUIS, May 24 (UPI) -- Malaysia's industry and business opportunities in the country were spotlighted earlier this month in a conference in the United States.

Boeing, which co-hosted the conference in St. Louis with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, said 75 U.S. and Malaysian businesses participated in the event.

"Strategic and cultural alliances are shifting back to markets in Asia," said former U.S. Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond, who spoke at the conference. "Establishing partnerships with Malaysian industry is critical in capturing new opportunities.

"Malaysia has transformed into a competitive, high-tech economy that is actively seeking areas of mutual collaboration in the medical, technology, and aerospace industries."

Malaysia flies Boeing's FA/18D Hornets, and the company is offering its "F" model in the government's competition for new combat aircraft. Insitu Pacific, a joint venture between Boeing and Insitu, recently partnered with Malaysian company Composites Technology Research Malaysia for in-country support of ScanEagle unmanned aircraft systems that are being acquired by the country.

"Strategic international partnerships create combinations of capabilities and ideas that give the partners a greater competitive advantage for future business pursuits," said Mike Gibbons, Boeing vice president of F/A-18 and E/A-18 Programs. "Boeing continues to demonstrate its long-term commitment to building win-win opportunities with the Malaysian aerospace industry that are independent of any one platform sale and will continue beyond any potential sale."

International Days spotlights global business opportunities

French Consul, General Gael Maisonneuve, makes a point to visit Tallahassee at least twice a year.

"I've been to Tallahassee quite a few times," he said, noting matter-of-factly that he likes to visit the city.

Often times it's business that brings him to the capital city. However, his upcoming visit will allow him to mix a little business with pleasure.

On Monday, the Florida Chamber of Commerce kicks off its annual International Days event with an evening opening reception at the Florida State University Conference Center.

Frank Ryll, director of Global Outreach for the chamber, said the two-day event brings the international community together at the state capital.

"We've got two ambassadors to the United States coming from Colombia and Canada," Ryll said. "We also have the administrator for the Panama Canal; it's widening can be really beneficial to the U.S."

The event also puts a spotlight on international business, Ryll added.

"There's no great opportunity. We are in a global economy and people are realizing there are a lot of great activities around the globe," he said.

Maisonneuve is looking forward to the opportunity to share what the consul does.

"International Days is a good moment of interaction," he said. "For two days, international representatives are coming together to discuss how we can do business better. I think it's really great to know a little bit more."

But also during his visit, Maisonneuve is attending a celebration reception hosted by Alliance Francaise of Tallahassee at A La Provence in Market Square, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

"We are very happy to add the Alliance to the American family," he said. "I am very happy to have the opportunity to celebrate with them."

The local organization was founded in early 2006, said Mary Bradford, president. In November the group officially became an Alliance chapter, a position that can only be given by the Alliance Francaise in Paris.

"To be an alliance you can't just be like social clubs, you have to teach (French) classes and provide opportunities to learn more about culture and arts," Bradford said. "That's our main thing."

Since its inception the local organization has been offering French classes. It also hosts Bastille Day and Fete de la Musique events and the organization has participated in other community events such as Springtime Tallahassee Festival.
