Shapiro Teams up with Temple University for Career Opportunities - YAHOO!

Samuel Shapiro & Company, Inc., a 96-year old Customhouse broker and freight forwarder, teams up with the Fox School of Business at Temple University for career opportunities.

Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) April 18, 2012

Samuel Shapiro & Company, Inc., a 96-year old Customhouse broker and freight forwarder, has recently been featured in the Fox School of Business’ newsletter highlighting its successful collaboration with the university in bringing fresh talent to support its growth.

Temple University was founded in 1884 and boasts a total student body of 39,000. Its vibrant main campus is located in Philadelphia and includes its Health Sciences Center, with satellite campuses in Center City, Ambler, Fort Washington, and Harrisburg. Its Fox School of Business was established in 1918 and is the largest, most comprehensive business school in the greater Philadelphia region, and among the largest in the world with nearly 6,500 students, 175 full-time faculty and more than 59,000 alumni. Fox’s Undergraduate Business Program is ranked in the top 55 in the U.S. while its International Business Undergraduate Programs are within the top 10 of the nation, according to US News & World Report. Shapiro’s Philadelphia office began tapping into this rich recruiting resource approximately 14 years ago to fill internship opportunities for current students and full-time positions for new graduates.

Marina Tasiopoulos, who is now the Regional Manager for the company’s New York and Philadelphia offices, was one of the first Temple students to join Shapiro, back in 1997. On average, Shapiro hosts two or three Temple student interns a semester, several of whom have stayed on after graduation to become full-time employees. The company currently has three other Temple graduates in import and management positions within its Philadelphia branch, in addition to three student interns.

This partnership has steadily developed over the years due to close collaboration between Richard Lucas, Shapiro’s Recruiting Manager, and Gloria Angel, Fox’s Assistant Director of International Programs (CIBER), plus Megan Panaccio, Director - Corporate Relations Center for Student Professional Development (CSPD). Recently, Lucas presented at an International Business Association meeting to give students a clear picture of what employers are looking for and a realistic perspective on day-to-day operations. “Fox students know the real world,” Lucas says. “They’ve worked. They’ve held internships. They already understand customer service. They’ve already adapted to working under the pressure of real-world transactions.”

Not everyone is built for the logistics industry, however. Shapiro consistently looks to build the bench, its future generation, by finding people that can handle the challenges of this ever-changing, dynamic industry and thrive. “Our employees master some of the most complex transactions in the world: United States imports and exports,” Lucas said. “If you are fascinated by international business – how companies are run, how regulations influence trade, how commodities are actually moved – if you’re excited by global trade, international supply chain logistics, ocean cargo, airlines and trucks, you’ll fit in at Samuel Shapiro & Company, Inc.” And, so far, Fox students have been fitting quite well.

Samuel Shapiro & Company, Inc. has been serving the international trade community since 1915. It was founded in Baltimore, MD (headquarters) and has branch offices in Charleston, SC; Dulles, VA; Philadelphia, PA; Atlanta, GA; and Rosedale, NY. Its mission is to achieve, manage and deliver the highest quality of personalized customer service in global transportation and regulatory compliance. Big data creating big career opportunities for IT pros - Infoworld

New job opportunities are emerging for IT professionals in the field of "big data," the term used to describe how corporations gather vast amounts of real-time data about their customers and analyze that data to drive decision making and increase profitability.

A new job title -- data scientist -- is all the rage. A data scientist typically has a background in computer science or mathematics as well as the analytical skills necessary to find the proverbial needle in a haystack of data gathered by the corporation.

"A data scientist is somebody who is inquisitive, who can stare at data and spot trends," says Anjul Bhambhri, vice president of Big Data Products at IBM. "It's almost like a Renaissance individual who really wants to learn and bring change to an organization."

Unheard of 18 months ago, "data scientist" has exploded in popularity as a Google search term. The number of Google searches of "data scientist" hit peaks 20 times higher than normal in the last quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012. It's a popular search term in high-tech hotspots such as San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York.

Among the U.S. companies looking to hire data scientists are PayPal, Amazon, and HP. Indeed, the term "data scientist" is mentioned in 195 job listings on the Dice.com website for IT professionals.

IT departments also are adding data-centric developers and system administrators who specialize in tools such as the open source Apache Hadoop software. Hadoop is designed for data-intensive, distributed applications and used by such popular websites as Yahoo, Facebook, LinkedIn and eBay.

Hadoop is mentioned in 612 of 83,122 job listings on Dice.com. Among the companies looking to hire Hadoop software engineers and developers are AT&T Interactive, Sears, PayPal, AOL and Deloitte.

Hadoop "is an emerging skill," says Alice Hill, managing director of Dice.com. "Companies need to manage large-scale data operations, and the whole idea of Hadoop is that you can do it inexpensively. That works really well with what we're seeing in terms of the movement to the cloud."

Hill sees opportunities related to Hadoop for both entry-level and experienced IT staff, as well as for hardware and software specialists.

"Traditional hardware people need to figure out how to cluster in different environments. It's not just about buying a database and hooking it up to a hard drive. Now you have distributed databases that are hooked up to multiple servers and multiple hard drives," Hill says. Hadoop "is inexpensive, but it require somebody who really knows how to scale hardware."

Hill says Hadoop is also a good skill for IT professionals with relational database management experience to pursue. "If you really understand data structure and queries, there's going to be a lot of job opportunities," she adds.

Career Expo Offers New Opportunities For Job Seekers - KAKE TV

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Recent layoffs at Wichita businesses have created opportunities for other companies looking to hire displaced workers.

More than 50 companies from difference backgrounds attended the Career Quest Expo in East Wichita Tuesday. Organizers said businesses were anxious to talk to people looking to make a career change.

“The announced layoffs has caused more companies to come with anticipation of talking to some of the people that are looking for opportunities,” said Bob Loudermilk, Quantum Expositions founder.

Some of the available positions will require employees to relocate, however. But that did not stop job seekers.

“I have a little girl so if I had to move to find work, I would,” Kayla Callaway said.

Other job seekers said the event gave them an opportunity to get up close and personal with potential employers.

“It’s kind of difficult going to businesses trying to do online stuff,” Bronson Garcia said. “There hasn’t been really much of a success.”

The next Quantum Career Expo is scheduled for April.
