Riverside forms committee to boost business - msnbc.com

RIVERSIDE — A business development committee has been created to boost commercial traffic and promote local opportunities.

The organization was formed Wednesday with authorization from the Township Committee, which  named three residents as its members.

The Riverside Business Development Committee will report to and work with municipal officials and the Riverside Business Association, Township Administrator Meghan Jack said.

"They will work on specific goals and objectives," Jack said.

The residents who make up the committee are Jose Cepa, Robert Halgas and Gary Haman. Future appointments are expected to be made annually.

Haman is active in local politics and community groups. Halgas and Cepa are business owners. Halgas operates The Madison, a six-venue complex on Lafayette Street with fine and casual restaurants, bars and a catering hall. Cepa is the proprietor of the Racetrack sports bar on Pavilion Avenue.

The committee will hold its first meeting this week. Its mission is to create a "synergy" among businesses, political groups and community organizations through communication, Halgas said. It also will promote existing commercial entities while furthering business development and opportunities.

The new members represent different aspects of the community and have a variety of interests, Halgas said. They support the business association, which sponsors programs and public events, and also purchased holiday lights that were displayed downtown in December.

"There's a very strong business association in town that does great things," Halgas said. "We have a lot of good, concerned business owners."

Township officials have been working to revitalize commercial areas and increase shopping traffic downtown through redevelopment initiatives.

The new committee will work with businesses "on a smaller scale" than the business association and will increase marketing initiatives, Jack said.

Halgas said he has observed "a lot of renovation" and new business owners in town.

"I see a lot of old buildings becoming new again. It's an old town that's regenerating itself," he said. "We're flourishing in Riverside."
