Take advantage of business opportunities, SA tells Switzerland - Independent Online

SOUTH Africa and Africa need skills development to drive the industrialisation required for continued growth on the continent, the minister of trade and industry told Swiss industrialists yesterday.

With the International Monetary Fund putting Africa’s growth at 5.5 percent, industrialisation was needed to ensure sustainable growth and development on the continent, said the minister at the Swissmem Industry Day yesterday.

The minister is on a brief visit to Switzerland where he has had an opportunity to visit Swiss industries and meet his counterpart, Federal Councillor Johann Schnieder-Ammann, head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs.

The focus of the industry day was new markets and Davies spoke not only of investment opportunities in SA, but in Africa as a whole.

He said things were changing on the continent, and that SA’s contribution to the International Monetary Fund for distressed economies showed just how much they were.

“Africa is on the move,” he told members of Swissmem and diplomats at the event in Zurich.

Swissmem is an association of the Swiss engineering, electrical and metal industries, and related technology-oriented sectors.

Davies said Switzerland and SA had good trade relations and the free trade agreement they had in place could be expanded to include other parts of the continent. If successful, this could give African countries and Switzerland access to each others’ markets.

The SA government saw the need for industrial development to drive job creation and was taking action through the establishment of economic zones and infrastructure development, Davies said.

He said there were opportunities for Swiss companies in the development of power stations, railways, telecommunications and more.

Davies said SA was also embracing green industries. There was no reason why SA could not become involved in manufacturing in this area. Davies cited solar panels as an example. He said jobs were being created, but for skilled workers.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, said more than 100 Swiss companies were trading in SA, creating in the region of 36 000 jobs.

Hans Hess, president of Swissmem, said Swiss companies should make the most of globalisation as the opportunities offered by emerging markets outweighed the risks.

AGF's Sale of Trust Business to Fund New Growth Opportunities as a Leading, Independent Global Investment Manager

Sale will provide AGF with $415 million cash

TORONTO , June 6, 2012 /CNW/ - Following today's announcement of the sale of AGF Trust Company ("AGF Trust") for approximately $415 million in total cash proceeds, AGF Management Limited ("AGF") will focus on growing its global investment management business.  The $415 million in total sale proceeds is comprised of $242 million for the total equity of AGF Trust (subject to changes in the equity value between now and closing) and repayment of the $109.5 million subordinated debt and the $64 million preferred share from AGF Trust to AGF Management Limited.

Over the last 25 years, AGF has successfully grown AGF Trust from a small, single product lending operation with only $200 million in loan assets to the over $3 billion multi-product loan business that operates today. The sale to B2B Trust, a firm with a similar business strategy to AGF Trust, will ensure that clients experience minimal changes as a result of the sale.

The sale of AGF Trust enables AGF to continue to be at the forefront of meeting the needs of advisors and investors by delivering best-in-class quality of service, innovative new investment products and improved investment capabilities.

Including the proceeds from the sale of AGF Trust and current unused debt capacity, AGF will have approximately $615 million of available capital to accelerate business growth for its Canadian and international investment management operations. Key strategic investments in the business will foster organic growth opportunities in all of AGF's channels, including its retail, institutional and private client businesses.

In a Fairness Opinion provided by RBC Capital Markets, the sale consideration received was deemed fair from a financial point of view, subject to the assumptions and limitations contained therein.  Subject to regulatory approvals and financing, the transaction is expected to close in August 2012 .

Global trading presents rich opportunities - The Independent

If you are thinking of trading overseas, the first step must always be to research which international markets you wish to enter. There are a number of territories that you probably have not previously considered. In the near future, our world trade map will be very different and economists argue that the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) markets could become larger than the world’s current six most developed countries in less than 40 years. Here are some insights into trading with these markets.

Brazil

Although internet penetration in Brazil is about 40 per cent of the population, users have placed Brazil in the top three countries that spend the most amount of time online, meaning that an e-commerce entry might be the most strategic. Consumer purchasing power in Brazil is increasing and the middle class now represents more than 50 per cent of the 185 million Brazilian population, meaning that there are significant opportunities for businesses looking to target that market.

Russia

Russian audiences have a significant appetite for international brands, particularly in the luxury sector, presenting opportunities for retail businesses looking to import. The Federation of International Trade Associations (FITA) notes that Russia is open to foreign trade in spite of strict legislation and tariff policies, and it is among the 20 largest importers in the world.

India

Roughly a third of the size of the United States but home to one sixth of the world's population, India is a country that’s young in more ways than one. 40 per cent of India is under 19, meaning that it’s a fruitful place for businesses targeting the youth sector. Reforms over the last decade include increasingly liberal foreign investment and exchange regimes, industrial decontrol, reductions in tariffs and other trade barriers, all of which pave the way for UK importers hoping to target that market.

China

With a population in excess of 1.3 billion people, China is home to the world’s single largest consumer market, a market that represents approximately 20 per cent of the planet’s population. The country has formally joined the World Trade Organisation and as part of this far-reaching trade liberalisation agreement, China has agreed to lower tariffs and to abolish market impediments.

Once you’ve identified your target markets, you must research them in depth before beginning to trade internationally, including any linguistic and cultural differences which could impact your business relationships. For example, giving and receiving a business card in an Indian meeting using your right hand is a sign of respect.

Also consider shipping, as you should ensure that the right carrier and method is used to distribute your product effectively. Different countries have a myriad of regulations and customs that an experienced third party carrier can navigate; for example, it is not permitted to import dental products to Algeria. 

Lastly, your overheads. From interest and exchange rates to the cost of shipping, there are a variety of cost factors that can affect your profit margins. Exporting can be financially demanding; careful planning is required to ensure that working capital is in place at every stage of the cycle.

Once you’ve decided exporting is right for your business, you should consider timings, which should be based on your company’s readiness, for example ensuring that you have sufficient stock to fulfil overseas demand, or the right infrastructure in place to get your product to market.
