As the Australian government fulfills its commitment to a National Broadband Network, a growing number of previously isolated communities are being given the opportunity to access fast broadband. Through a new online hub, Online Business For Regional Australia (obra.com.au), internet marketer and writer, Kerry Finch, is identifying viable business models, critically assessing and reviewing training programs, and reporting on NBN rollout news.

A joint Media Release issued on 18 October 2011, by the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy, stated “The NBN will be a massive boost for the Australian economy, opening up previously inaccessible national and global markets.”
It continued “Importantly, the NBN will allow local communities to thrive as businesses grow without the need to move to major metropolitan cities. This will mean jobs growth in regional Australia, and mean more people will be able to be employed locally.”
Australians located outside of the country’s major cities comprise both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, living in remote, rural and, increasingly, mining communities. These have traditionally had limited opportunities for educational advancement and home-based business establishment and growth.
“Women in particular have been reluctant to remain in such environments because of the limited opportunities for work and social interaction. The NBN will make it easier for them to establish online businesses and harness the power of the internet to expand current businesses” said Ms Finch.
