Fargo is nearly 300 miles from Minot, but the eastern North Dakota city is jumpstarting itself to get in on the Bakken action, says the president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council.
"All of a sudden eastern North Dakota has really seen the opportunities for companies to build for the oil field," Ron Ness told members of the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce's Energy Committee at a recent meeting. "And we need them all," he said.
"All of the manufacturers over there are looking at building things," he added.
Ness said he was in Fargo recently where he spoke with a number of Fargo leaders, including bankers and chamber of commerce members.
"Businesses in North Dakota want to understand how they can interact with the industry," Ness said. He said there's work to be done in businesses finding their niche and how that can be done.
"We need to think about how we can do that," he said.
When visiting with the Fargo business people, he said they talked about figuring out how many Fargo-based businesses are doing business in the oil field.
"We can diversify this thing more in North Dakota, and I think we need to do that," he said.
