U.S. and Chinese government officials and private sector leaders will tour America's Central Port today to explore business opportunities.
U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello will lead the delegation, which is scheduled to spend about an hour at the Tri-City Regional Port District in Granite City. The hope is to bring Chinese business opportunities to southwestern Illinois, said the port's business development manager, Frank Miles.
Miles, who was formerly an aide to Costello, said the tour is in conjunction with the fourth annual Transportation Forum being held in St. Louis. He said that at the last forum held in China, officials requested that this forum be held on an inland waterway.
The port's new S Harbor, which is under construction, will handle imports and exports of products produced in the Midwest and will create the most northerly rail, river and roadway freight transfer location south of the Mississippi river lock system.
